J. C. Penney is a holding company. Co.'s business consists of selling merchandise and services to consumers through its department stores and Direct (Internet/catalog) channels, both of which serve the same type of customers and provide virtually the same mix of merchandise. The department stores also accept returns from sales made in the stores, via the Internet and through catalogs. Co. markets family apparel, jewelry, shoes, accessories and home furnishings. In addition, the department stores provide customers with services such as salon, optical, portrait photography and custom decorating. As of Feb 2 2008, Co. operated 1,067 department stores in 49 states in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
