Brian is a technology entrepreneur who has been CEO of three successful companies and chairman of several more. He has been on numerous boards of directors of private companies, public companies and institutions. He is a former software developer and system architect in the telecom and datacom industries. He is also a former researcher in high energy nuclear physics and professor of computing science. He holds a Ph.D. in high energy nuclear physics and is a professional engineer.

Conrad has a quarter century's worth of technological, management and advisory experience and has been in the venture capital industry for five years. Based in Ottawa, Canada, Conrad focuses on investments in communications and networking. Conrad has served on the boards of a number Newbury portfolio companies including Abridean (acquired by nCipher), Spotwave, and NewStep. Prior to Newbury, Conrad was Executive Vice President of the Access and Network Management Product Group at Newbridge Networks, which he helped grow from a pre-revenue private company to a global public company that was later acquired by Alcatel for $7 billion. During his 14 year tenure at Newbridge, he was responsible for Product Management and R&D of three key product lines (broadband access, IP VPNs, and network and service management) that contributed $750 million in revenues. Conrad also played a significant role in the creation and growth of 28 companies through the Newbridge Affiliate Investment Program including Insoft (acquired by Netscape), Broadband Networks (acquired by Nortel), and Juniper Networks (JNPR). Prior to Newbridge, he was Executive Vice President of Research and Development of Mitel Corporation, where he designed their original PBX product that generated $2 billion of revenues. Conrad holds six patents in digital communications. He finished top of his class in Electrical Engineering at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada and has completed a variety of post-graduate courses in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. Conrad believes strongly in a balance between work and his personal life. On the business side, Conrad gets his greatest pleasure from working with talented and driven entrepreneurs. On the personal side, he enjoys aggressive sports such as mountain biking, mogul skiing, slalom water skiing and competitive softball. He is married and lives on the Ottawa River in Kanata, Ontario.
