Dennis Liotta has discovered crucial HIV-fighting drugs, founded several drug discovery companies, and been recognized as a seminal contributor to medicinal chemistry. Along with two Emory University colleagues, Dr. Liotta discovered (lamivudine) 3TC and (emtricitabine) FTC, part of the anti-HIV "cocktail" taken by 80 percent of HIV-positive patients in the United States, with annual sales of more than $1 billion. Dr. Liotta was a co-founder of Pharmasset Inc., a pharmaceutical company in Atlanta that has developed two additional anti-HIV drugs to help patients for whom a standard cocktail treatment has lost effectiveness. The company has been successful not only in drug discovery but in its financial backing, having become one of the biggest capital fund raisers among biotechnology companies in the Southeast. In 1995, Dr. Liotta was an important early contributor to Triangle Pharmaceuticals in North Carolina, which developed anti-AIDS compounds. In 2002, Gilead Sciences bought the company for $464 million. Dr. Liotta serves as an advisor or consultant for several major pharmaceutical companies. He holds numerous patents on anti-viral and anti-cancer agents, has received many academic and professional honors and awards, and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles. A professor of chemistry and former vice president for research at Emory University, Dr. Liotta earned his bachelor's degree at Queens College and his doctorate at the City University of New York.
