Ron Cohen, M.D. is President, CEO and founder of Acorda Therapeutics, Inc., a public biotechnology company developing therapies for spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and other disorders of the central nervous system. Dr. Cohen previously was a principal in the startup of Advanced Tissue Sciences, Inc., a biotechnology company engaged in the growth of human organ tissues for transplantation uses. Dr. Cohen received his B.A. degree with honors in Psychology from Princeton University, and his M.D. from the Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia Medical Center, and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Cohen is Chairman Emeritus and a Director of the Board of the New York Biotechnology Association. He also serves as a member of the Health Care Governing Body and the Emerging Company Section of the Board of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), and as a member of the Columbia-Presbyterian Health Sciences Advisory Council. Dr. Cohen is a recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the New York Metropolitan Region, and an inductee into the National Spinal Cord Injury Association’s “Spinal Cord Injury Hall of Fame.”

Andrew R. Blight, Ph.D. has been our Chief Scientific Officer since January 2004 and previously served as our Executive Vice President, Research and Development from 2000 to 2004, and Vice President from 1998 to 2000. Prior to joining Acorda, Dr. Blight spent approximately six years as Professor and Director of the Neurosurgery Research Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Blight held prior academic positions at Purdue University and New York University. Dr. Blight is a leader in SCI pathophysiology research and has made several important contributions to the field, particularly on the role of demyelination in SCI. He also pioneered the therapeutic application of 4-AP in SCI animal models and in human clinical trials. Dr. Blight is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Neurotrauma and has served as a member of the NIH NSDA review committee. He was previously Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President of the National Neurotrauma Society. Dr. Blight received his B.S. in Zoology and his Ph.D. in Zoology/Neurobiology from the University of Bristol, U.K.

David Lawrence, M.B.A. has been our Chief Financial Officer since January 2005. He previously served as our Vice President, Finance from January 2001 through 2004, and Director, Finance from 1999 to 2001. From 1991 to 1999, Mr. Lawrence held several positions for Tel-Air Communications, Inc. including Vice President and Controller. Prior to Tel-Air, he held financial management positions of Controller and Finance Manager for Southwestern Bell and Metromedia Telecommunications respectively. Mr. Lawrence received his undergraduate degree in Accounting from Roger Williams College, and an M.B.A in Finance from Iona College. Mr. Lawrence is a founding member and currently serves on the Board of Directors as Treasurer of The Brian Ahearn Children's Fund.

Thomas Wessel, M.D., Ph.D., has been our Chief Medical Officer since November 2008. Prior to joining Acorda, Dr. Wessel served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Research at Sepracor, Inc., leading the central nervous system (CNS) and respiratory medicine development teams. He also served as the medical director for the company's insomnia development program, expanded the company’s clinical development capabilities, initiated several projects based on isomer and metabolite technologies, and participated in various business development activities. Previously, Dr. Wessel worked on several CNS projects at Janssen Pharmaceutica in Europe and the U.S., leading the U.S. regulatory submission team for an Alzheimer’s disease treatment approved by the FDA in 2000. Before working in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Wessel held several academic and research positions.
Dr. Wessel completed his residency in neurology at New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (Cornell University Medical Center), and is Board Certified in Neurology. He graduated from the University of Munich School of Medicine and completed his postgraduate research in experimental neurobiology at the Max-Planck-Institute for Psychiatry in Martinsried, Germany.
Jane Wasman, J.D. has been our Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary since May 2004. From 1995 to 2004, Ms. Wasman held various leadership positions at Schering-Plough Corporation, including Staff Vice President and Associate General Counsel responsible for legal support for U.S. Pharmaceuticals operations, including sales, marketing and compliance; FDA regulatory matters; global research and development; and, corporate licensing and business development. She served as Staff Vice President, International in 2001 and as Staff Vice President, European Operations—Legal from 1998 to 2000. Previously, Ms. Wasman specialized in litigation at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. She also served as Associate General Counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Veteran's Affairs. Ms. Wasman graduated Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University and earned her J.D. from Harvard Law School. Ms. Wasman is a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Biotechnology Association.

Denise Duca Ed.M. has been our Vice President, Human Resources since March 2005. Previously she served as our Executive Director, Human Resources from 2002 to 2005. Ms. Duca previously was Director – Staffing and Development for Carter-Wallace’s New Jersey locations consisting of five major divisions; Consumer Products, Pharmaceutical, Diagnostics, International and Pet Products. Prior to her work with Carter-Wallace, Ms. Duca held human resources management positions at Colgate-Palmolive Co. and Viacom International, Inc. Anthony O. Caggiano, M.D., Ph.D. has been our Vice President of Preclinical Development since February 2009. He previously served in various roles in the Preclinical and Research & Development departments since joining Acorda in 2001, directing basic research and product development efforts, coordinating external research efforts with academic and commercial collaborations, and collaborating in business development activities. Dr. Caggiano has authored papers in neuroinflammation, injury and recovery, and has been the inventor or co-inventor on multiple Acorda technologies. He also has served as a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) neuropharmacology Small Business Innovations Research (SBIR) grants review committee. Prior to joining Acorda, Dr. Caggiano co-founded Remote Diagnostic Imaging, a company that assembled an expert staff of radiologists to provide remote diagnostic services to understaffed hospitals. Dr. Caggiano received his undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies of biology, chemistry and psychology from University of Virginia, and his M.D. and Ph.D. in neurobiology from the University of Chicago.
Tierney Saccavino has been our Vice President of Corporate Communications since March 2005. She previously served as our Senior Director, Corporate Communications from 2001-2005, Director from 1998-2001. Ms. Saccavino brings over 15 years’ experience in public relations, marketing, and corporate communications activities to her position at Acorda. Before joining Acorda she was the Manager of Corporate Relations at Adventis, a Boston-based management consulting firm focusing on the media, communications and telecom industries. In that capacity, she was responsible for public relations, corporate promotions, and executive education programs. Previously, she worked for nine years in a variety of positions at Fidelity Investments including human resources and information systems. Ms. Saccavino attended the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut.

Dr. Cotman is a co-founder of the Company. He has been a Scientific Director of and consultant to the Company since October 1987, served as a director of the Company from March 1989 to October 1990, and was reelected as a director in November 1991. Dr. Cotman has been a Professor of Psychobiology, Neurology, and Psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine since 1985. He was a Professor of Psychobiology and Neurology at that University from 1983 to 1985, and has held various other teaching and research positions at that University since 1968. He chaired the Scientific Advisory Council of the American Paralysis Association and is a member of numerous professional associations and committees, including the Council of the American Society for Neurochemistry, the National Institute of Aging Task Force, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the International Society for Neurochemistry. Dr. Cotman has served on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals and has authored or co-authored seven books and over 400 articles in the fields of neurobiology, memory and cognition, and the recovery of function after brain injury. Dr. Cotman holds a B.A. in Chemistry from Wooster College, an M.A. in Analytical Chemistry from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Indiana University.

Eugene Johnson, Jr., Ph.D. is Norman J. Stupp Professor of Neurology, Professor of Molecular Biology and Pharmacology, and Co-Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. He is preeminent in the field of neurotrophic factors, and in the mechanisms and prevention of programmed nerve cell death. Dr. Johnson has received a Jacob Javits Neurosciences Investigator Award from NINDS, a MERIT Award from the NIA, and a Decade of the Brain Medal from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. His editorial board service includes Neuron, Journal of Neuroscience, Synapse, and Journal of Neurotrauma. He is a Section Editor for Neurobiology of Aging and Experimental Neurology. Dr. Johnson received his B.Sc. in Pharmacy, and his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Maryland.

Herbert Raymond Henney, III, Pharm.D. has been our Vice President of Medical Affairs since August 2005. Previously, Dr. Henney was a Vice President of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs at Pharmos Corporation. His responsibilities included providing oversight of clinical research staff and study related contractors, as well as serving as the program task leader for a medication that aids in the treatment of traumatic brain injury and post CABG cognitive impairment. Prior to Pharmos Corporation, Mr. Henney was the Senior Director of Medical Affairs and Clinical Research at Bio-Technology General Corporation. He developed, implemented and managed the Phase I through III clinical trials and post-NDA trials. Mr. Henney is a prolific writer and has had his research published in several journals including the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, and U.S. Pharmacist. He received his B.S. in Pharmacy from Temple University and his Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Jacqueline C. Bresnahan, Ph.D. is Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco. In collaboration with Dr. Michael Beattie (see above), Dr. Bresnahan has contributed seminal work in the areas of SCI recovery mechanisms, synaptic plasticity and regeneration, most recently in elucidating the role of programmed cell death (“apoptosis”) in SCI, and she is co-developer of the BBB (“Basso-Beattie- Bresnahan”) scale that is now a standard for measurement of behavioral recovery in animals after SCI. She is past President of the Neurotrauma Society, serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Neurotrauma, Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience, and the Neurotrauma Society Newsletter, and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation. Dr. Bresnahan received her B.A. in Psychology and Biology from Kent State University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Physiological Psychology from Ohio State University.

James Fawcett, Ph.D. is Chairman of the Cambridge University Centre for Brain Repair, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of Spinal Research, and Director of Medical Studies at King’s College Cambridge. He trained in medicine at Oxford University and St. Thomas’ Hospital, and then practiced for four years, in autoimmune disease, before going into basic research. He began his research on the repair of the damaged brain and spinal cord while at the Salk Institute in California, and continued when he came to Cambridge University. His main interest has been the inhibition of nerve fiber regeneration by scar tissue. He has also worked on brain grafting, brain development and stem cells. Dr. Fawcett recently gained the distinction of being the first winner of the Ulrich Schellenberg Prize from the Institut International de Recherche en Paraplegie for his work on regeneration of the spinal cord.

Mark D. Noble, Ph.D. is Professor of Biomedical Genetics at the Department of Biomedical Genetics, University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY. Dr. Noble is a world leader in the areas of stem cell biology, CNS myelin repair, glial progenitor cells, the effects of metabolic regulators on cellular function and CNS regeneration. Martin Grumet, Ph.D. is Professor of Cell Biology and Neuroscience in the Division of Life Sciences at Rutgers University and Director of the W.M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience. He is the discoverer of the Ng-CAM protein, a chick homologue of L1. He is a leading researcher of cell adhesion molecules in the nervous system and their roles in CNS development and regeneration. Dr. Grumet received his B.Sc. in Physics and Biology from, respectively, The Cooper Union and New York University, his Ph.D. in Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University, and did his Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Developmental and Molecular Biology at The Rockefeller University.

Mary B. Bunge, Ph.D. is Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy, Neurological Surgery and Neurology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, FL. Dr. Bunge’s research focuses on the development and repair of neural tissue, particularly by the application of cultured Schwann cell grafts and various nerve growth factors. Mary Bunge has contributed information on the mechanisms of axonal growth by focusing on the leading tips of lengthening nerve fibers in culture. Both Mary and her husband, Richard Bunge, have been pioneers in neural cell-extracellular matrix interactions: they delineated a number of interactions that take place between the different cell types and the extracellular matrix of the peripheral nervous system. She has served on the Editorial boards of the Journal of Cell Biology and Journal of Neurocytology and is the recipient of the 1996 Wakeman Award for her seminal contributions to the field of spinal cord injury repair. Dr. Bunge received her B.S. in Biology from Simmons College, her M.S. in Medical Physiology and Ph.D. in Zoology/Cytology from the University of Wisconsin Medical School, and her Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Developmental Neurobiology at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. She was voted one of three Florida Women of Achievement in 2002. Dr. Bunge has been a member of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation Research Consortium since 1995 and holds a Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award for 1998-2005. In 2003, she was named the Christine E. Lynn Distinguished Professor of Neuroscience.

Melitta Schachner, Ph.D. is Professor of Neurobiology, Center for Molecular Neurobiology, University of Hamburg. Dr. Schachner is the discoverer of the L1 protein, a promoter of axonal outgrowth, and the L2/HNK-1 carbohydrate, a critical motor neuron guidance factor. Her research focus is on cell adhesion molecules in the nervous system, and their role in nerve cell regeneration. She serves on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals, including the Journal of Neurobiology, Brain Research, Molecular Brain Research, Journal of Neuroscience and the Journal of Neuroimmunology. Dr. Schachner’s publications are among the 100 most-cited in neuroscience worldwide and among the 20 most-cited in natural sciences from Germany, according to ISI (Institute for Scientific Information, monitored from 2000 to 2003). Dr. Schachner received her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Tubingen, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Max-Planck Institute in Munich. She was awarded the Prize of the German Society for Spinal Cord Regeneration in 2000.

Patrick A. Tresco, Ph.D. is Professor of Bioengineering and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Utah. He is recognized for his work in various CNS tissue engineering applications and for his contributions to understanding how CNS tissues interact with a broad range of implanted biomaterials. Dr. Tresco holds fifteen issued and pending patents relating to this and other areas of biotechnology. Dr. Tresco is a regular peer reviewer for Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, Biomaterials, Experimental Neurology, and other biomedical engineering-related journals. He received his B.A. in Biology from Susquehanna University, his M.S. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Rhode Island, and his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from Brown University. Barclay A. Phillips, age 46, has served as our Chief Financial Officer since August 2008. Previously, he served as a member of our board of directors from 2000 until his appointment as our Chief Financial Officer in August 2008. From 1999 to August 2008, Mr. Phillips was a Managing Director of Vector Fund Management. From 1991 to 1999, Mr. Phillips served in various roles including Director of Private Placements and Biotechnology Analyst for INVESCO Funds Group, Inc. From 1985 to 1990, Mr. Phillips held positions in sales and trading with Paine Webber, Inc. and Shearson Lehman Hutton, Inc. Over the last ten years, Mr. Phillips has held board positions for a number of public and private companies and currently serves as a director of Acorda Therapeutics, Inc., a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company. Mr. Phillips received a B.A. in economics from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Barry Greene is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals. Barry joined Alnylam in September 2003, bringing over 15 years of experience in healthcare industries and consulting. Prior to Alnylam, he was General Manager of Oncology at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he led the company's global strategy and execution for its oncology business including strategic business direction and execution, culminating in the successful approval and launch of VELCADE (bortezomib) in mid 2003. Prior to joining Millennium in February 2001, Mr. Greene served as Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer for Mediconsult.com. Prior to Mediconsult.com, Mr. Greene's past experiences include Vice president of Marketing and Customer Services for AstraZeneca formerly AstraMerck; Vice President Strategic Integration with responsibility for the AstraZeneca North American post merger integration; and Partner, Andersen Consulting responsible for the pharmaceutical/biotechnology marketing and sales practice. Mr. Greene received his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from University of Pittsburgh and serves as a Senior Scholar at Duke University, Fuqua School of Business.
Ian Smith joined Vertex in November 2001. Prior to joining Vertex, Mr. Smith served as a partner in the Life Science and Technology Practice Group of Ernst & Young LLP, an accounting firm, from 1999 to 2001. As Vertex’s CFO, Mr. Smith holds responsibility for a wide variety of core functions at Vertex, including Finance, Strategic Communications, Information Systems and Operations. Mr. Smith is also a member of the Executive Team at Vertex.
Mr. Smith received a B.A. with honors in Accounting and Finance from Manchester Metropolitan University. Mr. Smith is a current member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, and the Financial Executives Institute.

Michael Steinmetz, PhD, has been Managing Director of Clarus Ventures since the firm's inception in 2005. He has over 24 years of direct industry and investment experience within the healthcare sector, including being a General Partner in a healthcare venture capital firm since 1997. From 1986 to 1997, Dr. Steinmetz was an executive at Hoffmann-LaRoche where he held various positions including Vice President of Preclinical Research and Development, and Global Head of Biotechnology. Sandra Panem joined Cross Atlantic Partners in 2000 as a Managing Partner. Previously, she was President of Vector Fund Management, where she was responsible for the start-up, capital raising, and management of the asset management affiliate of Vector Securities International. Operations included the management of the Vector Later-Stage Equity Fund, L.P., and Vector Later-Stage Equity Fund II, L.P., private partnerships committing $240 million to equity investments in the emerging life science and healthcare industries. Prior to joining Vector, Dr. Panem served as Vice President and Portfolio Manager for the Oppenheimer Global BioTech Fund, a $200 million mutual fund that invested in public and private biotechnology companies. Prior to Oppenheimer, Dr. Panem was Vice President at Salomon Brothers, Inc. where she acted as a member of Salomon Brothers Venture Capital, a $40 million fund focused on early and later-stage life science and technology investments. Dr. Panem was also an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago and a Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and is the author of several books and papers concerning the commercialization of new medical technologies. Currently, she holds directorships in Acorda Therapeutics, Labcyte, and GenomeQuest. She is a director of the New York Biotechnology Association. She received a B.S. Degree in Biochemistry ('66) and a Ph.D. in Microbiology ('70) from the University of Chicago.

Steven M. Rauscher, CEO , Oscient Pharmaceuticals, has been a Director for TDI since September 2000. After 7 years of service as an outside board of director and President of Genome Therapeutics he assumed the CEO role, morphing GTC into Oscient Pharmaceuticals. Prior to GTC, Mr. Rauscher was most recently CEO of AmericasDoctor, a company formed from the merger of Affiliated Research Centers, Inc. and AmericasDoctor.com. The company provides clinical research and marketing services to the pharmaceutical industry. During his tenure at AmericasDoctor, company revenues grew from $500,000 to more than $56 million, and the company today has nearly 300 employees.
