Adams Tire & Battery Service was founded in 1971 by Bruce Adams. With the help of his brother Glenn, Adams Tire opened it's first warehouse in the basement of a used car lot office at 9th & Union Streets in Reading. At that time, the main focus of the business was the wholesale of tires, batteries and accessories to those in the automotive trade. In the early years, Bruce and Glenn would sell and deliver their wares out of a couple of old baker trucks to service stations, garages and car dealers in Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh and Montgomery Counties. It didn't take long to outgrow that tiny basement. They rented a much larger building on Portland Ave in West Wyomissing. The business continued to grow and it wasn't long before another move was necessary. South Hull Street in Sinking Spring was the location of their third warehouse. This building was considerably larger than the Portland Ave location and would hopefully serve their needs for many years to come. Through the mid-seventies full-service gas stations started to give way to self-serve convienence stores. As the wholesale trade started to taper off it became apparent it was time to shift their focus to the retail customer. Tire service equipment was purchased and they entered into the retail tire business. The problem was that the Hull Street location did not lend itself to the retail tire business.
