Walter Futterweit, MD, FACE, is Clinical Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and a Fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (FACE). He has devoted twenty-six years to the study of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and its treatment. A graduate with honors from New York University, Dr. Futterweit began working at Mount Sinai Hospital as an endocrinology fellow and has worked with Mount Sinai in a clinical and research capacity ever since. Dr. Futterweit's research efforts are now focused on the follow-up of women with PCOS and their risks for Insulin Resistance Syndrome (IRS) and cardiovascular and metabolic abnormalities. He is also studying a gene marker associated with PCOS near the insulin receptor region. His work takes him around the world to lecture at various meetings and clinical symposia. Dr. Futterweit has published extensively on the topic, including scientific journals such as Endocrine Practice, the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the Archives of Internal Medicine. He also wrote the first textbook on Polycystic Ovarian Disease in 1984. Dr. Futterweit participates on the advisory board of the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Association (PCOSA), and is an active member of multiple professional organizations such as the American Medical Association (AMA), Endocrine Society, Androgen Excess Society (AES), American Diabetes Association (ADA) and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP). Dr. Futterweit has received numerous awards for his work, including Endocrinologist of the Year from the Mount Sinai Medical Center, and one of New York Magazine's Best Doctors in New York Metro Area.
