No government, no Web
The passing of the great free market theorist Milton Friedman and the big problems of Airbus, a heavily subsidized European consortium, seem like a classic case of synchronicity -- the occurrence of two seemingly random events that are subtly connected. Friedman, a life-long enemy of government subsidies to business, would...
Boeing chief wants 'level playing field'
LE BOURGET, France -- Boeing Co. Chairman Lew Platt said Wednesday that a trans-Atlantic trade dispute over plane subsidies should not exclude Airbus from U.S. defense work as sought by lawmakers. But Platt stuck firmly to demands that the European company give up government development loans before the...
U.S. to file Airbus case
WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration said Monday it would bring a trade case alleging the European Union is providing illegal subsidies to Airbus, the major competitor to U.S.-based Boeing Co. U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman said the administration had decided to proceed with a case before the World...
US still anxious for talks with EU on Boeing-Airbus
WASHINGTON AFP — The United States said it remained willing to negotiate with Europe to resolve a bitter trade row over aircraft subsidies, but warned its patience was running out. Chief US negotiator Robert Zoellick has responded to a letter from EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson spelling out Washington's...
EU says ready to continue negotiations with US on Airbus-Boeing handouts
BRUSSELS AFP — EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson said the European Union was ready to continue negotiations with the United States over government aid to their respective aircraft makers after they gave up on trying to find an accord by Monday's deadline, echoing the sentiments of his US counterpart. ...
U.S., EU will try to resolve trade spat
BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Highlighting a more conciliatory mood since President Bush was re-elected, the United States and the European Union agreed Tuesday to try to amicably settle the decades-old trade dispute over billions of dollars in subsidies to aircraft makers Airbus and Boeing. The decision to defer pursuing...
EU commission hopes for positive news on Airbus/Boeing subsidy row
BRUSSELS AFP — The European Commission hopes for positive developments in the European Union-US row over government aid to aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing, a commission spokeswoman said. The EU and the United States, in a long-standing dispute, have accused each other of providing subsidies to their respective civil...
Mid-air collision
The stage is set for what could be the next big confrontation between the United States and "Old Europe," this time over subsidies to the European airliner manufacturing company Airbus, and Boeing, the remaining U.S. manufacturer of commercial airliners. We hope the administration doesn't see this as part of a...
The Airbus Showdown
The United States and Europe are edging toward their biggest trade dispute ever--and the United States shouldn't blink. The dispute involves competition between Boeing and Airbus, which has toppled Boeing as the world's largest producer of commercial jets. In 2004, Airbus will deliver about 315 jets compared with Boeing's 285....
Boeing says it will not tolerate Airbus using A350 to get subsidies
WASHINGTON AFP — Aviation giant Boeing underscored that it will not accept European rival Airbus using its new A350 to win government subsidies. "Boeing's concern with the A350 is whether Airbus seeks government support for the airplane," Amanda Landers, a Boeing spokeswoman, told AFP. "New subsidies such as...

John Leahy was appointed Chief Operating Officer – Customers in July 2005, also continuing as Chief Commercial Officer of Airbus, a role he held since August 1994. His responsibilities cover all commercial activities including sales, marketing, contracts, business transaction control, asset management, leasing, and business development, He is also in charge of all Airbus subsidiaries – Airbus North America, Airbus China, Airbus Japan, and Airbus Russia – as well as of all regional sales offices. Mr Leahy is a member of the Airbus Executive Committee (or Management Board). In 1995, when Airbus had an 18% market share, Mr. Leahy set a commercial goal to achieve 50% of the market by the year 2000. Airbus achieved this goal in 1999 and has maintained over 50% market share in five of the following six years. Airbus also has over 50 percent of worldwide aircraft deliveries. Mr. Leahy led the commercial activities that resulted in the successful launch of the new Airbus flagship, the A380-800 passenger aircraft and the A380-800F freighter aircraft. These two new superjumbos now set the standards for very large aircraft in the 21st Century. He is also leading the sales campaigns for the all-new A350-800 and A350-900 twin-engine widebodies. Mr. Leahy worked for seven years in marketing at Piper Aircraft before joining Airbus North America in January 1985. He became head of sales in 1988 and then became President of Airbus North America, where his responsibilities included sales and marketing, as well as sales finance and contracts activities for the important American and Canadian markets. Mr. Leahy was responsible for the penetration of the strategic North American market, where most major US airlines are now Airbus customers. Mr. Leahy has an MBA from Syracuse University with concentration in both Finance and Transportation Management and a BA from Fordham University with a dual major in Communications and Philosophy. He is also a licensed multi-engine commercial pilot and a former flight instructor with more than 3,700 hours of flying time. He was born in New York in August 1950 and is married with three children. His hobbies include, in addition to selling aircraft, sailing and scuba diving.
