Dr. Trova was responsible for directing the research efforts of a group of medicinal chemists (4-8 scientists/technicians) who were involved with a number of projects. Dr. Trova was promoted in August 1996 to Director of Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry with significantly increased responsibilities (20-25 scientists/technicians). In March of 1998, he was promoted to Vice President, Medicinal Chemistry and then in August 2000, another promotion led him to Senior Vice President.
Projects of current interest under his direction are in the areas of cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, diabetes, CNS disorders, oncology, and ocular disorders. Areas of research interest to Dr. Trova include asymmetric synthesis, heterocycles, medicinal chemistry, and natural product synthesis. His current responsibilities include management of the Discovery Services of AMRI in the United States, Hungary and Singapore.
A member of the American Chemical Society since 1982, Dr. Trova is a member of the Organic and Medicinal Chemistry divisions within the ACS. He is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Peptide Society.

Harold Meckler discovered the fun and enjoyment of synthetic organic chemistry while conducting undergraduate research in the laboratory of Professor Wilkins Reeves at the University of Maryland, College Park. Upon graduation, he moved to the laboratories of Professor Joseph Tufariello at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he earned a Ph.D. in 1983. His thesis described the nitrone based syntheses of Anatoxin-a and Loline. Migrating 250 miles east to join the chemical development group of Sterling Winthrop (Rensselaer, New York), he worked on process modifications for the preparation of pentazocine (Talwin®). There, he examined the use of LiKOR (Schloesser) bases, amine boranes and modified sodium borohydride reducing agents for applications amenable to chemical production.
In 1984, he moved to the chemical development group of CIBA-Geigy, where he focused on the process development, pilot plant scale up and cGMP production of a wide variety of compounds: aromatase inhibitors, adenosine antagonists, 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, LTB4 inhibitors and ACE inhibitors. In addition, his lab groups were responsible for the production support of Forhistal®, Ismelin®, Anafranil®, Anturane®, Lioresal® and Lopressor®. In conjunction with these cGMP production activities, he was part of the two person team that wrote the Validation Guidelines for Bulk Pharmaceutical Chemicals for the CIBA-Geigy Pharmaceuticals Division.
In 1994, he joined Telor Ophthalmic Pharmaceuticals to build its organic chemistry department. There, he designed the research and cGMP production labs, developed and implemented the synthesis of ethacrynic acid. Working with the analytical, QC and formulations groups, he developed and validated the Xarano® production procedures. In 1995, he joined Albany Molecular Research to head up the chemical development and GMP production groups. Since then, he has assumed broader responsibility as vice president, science and technology. He has received multiple patents as well as over fifteen publications.
Dr. Hagen is responsible for all Analytical Chemistry, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs for all AMRI locations. He also oversees AMRI’s Chemical Development, Small Scale cGMP Manufacturing, and Large Scale Commercial Manufacturing business components, including operations in Albany/Rensselaer and Syracuse, New York; Hyderabad, India; as well as AMRI’s Large Scale Manufacturing operations in Rensselaer, New York and Aurangabad, India.
Prior to this role, Dr. Hagen was Senior Director of Analytical Quality Services, where he supervised AMRI's analytical chemistry team, which measures the chemical purity and physical properties of drugs as they move through the drug development and manufacturing process.
He joined AMRI in 2005 from his previous position as Director of Analytical Research and Development at Pfizer's Global Research and Development Division in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He began his tenure at Pfizer in 1994 as a Research Scientist. Prior to Pfizer, he was an Analytical Biochemist with Ribi ImmunoChem Research, Inc. Dr. Hagen received a B.A. in Biology from Lawrence University, as well as a Master's degree in Botany and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, both from the University of Idaho.
