Board of Directors
Irwin Federman joined USVP in 1990 as a general partner with significant investment experience: as CEO of Monolithic Memories, he led his firm's investments in successful startups such as Cypress Semiconductor, Xilinx and Altera. During his tenure as CEO from 1978 to 1987, Irwin spearheaded MMI's turnaround from virtual bankruptcy to a $250 million revenue organization. When MMI merged with Advanced Micro Devices, Irwin assumed the post of Vice Chairman of AMD. As former Chairman of the Semiconductor Industry Association and board member of the National Venture Capital Association, Irwin draws on the breadth of his experience to help entrepreneurs consider their options: "Ultimately every decision is made by the management team," says Irwin. "It is rewarding when I can share experience that helps them sort out their alternatives." Irwin was a founding or lead investor in Blue Martini, CheckPoint Software Technologies, Centillium Communications, Crescendo Communications, MMC Networks, NeoMagic, Netro, Nuance Communications, Quick Logic, SanDisk and TelCom Semiconductor. He has led USVP's investments in BeVocal, On24 and Mellanox, among many others. Irwin received a B.S. in Economics from Brooklyn College and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering Science from Santa Clara University. A recipient of the Anti-Defamation League's Torch of Liberty, Irwin is involved with a number of community organizations in San Francisco and on the Peninsula. Irwin and his wife enjoy ballet and opera and support the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Paul McWilliams is the founder and editor of Next Inning Technology Research. McWilliams has over twenty-five years of experience in the semiconductor and high-tech industries, working with companies such as Linear Technology, Altera, Cypress Semiconductor, American Technical Ceramics, Arrow Electronics, Avnet, Micrel, Power-One, Siliconix, Xicor, and many others. After starting his career at Avnet in the mid-seventies, McWilliams left in 1977 to start his own company, MTS Inc., which contracted with various manufacturers to act as their exclusive representative for sales, marketing and application support. While at MTS, McWilliams was involved in a wide variety of products ranging from semiconductors to microwave sub-systems and even cesium timing standards (atomic clocks). When confronted with an opportunity to sell his stake in MTS Inc., McWilliams jumped at the chance to concentrate on investing full-time, something he began at the age of ten by making a smart bet on the initial public offering of ComSat. With the knowledge gained through years of direct field experience, a wide range of industry contacts and healthy a dose of common sense, McWilliams provides readers many with a better understanding of how technology moves through our economic system and ideas as to how they can optimize their investing profits while managing risks. It was this, and his folksy writing style, that led SmartMoney magazine to select him as one of the thirty most influential people in the world of investing. When not researching and writing about investing, McWilliams enjoys time with his family. He loves to travel and participate in outdoor activities. The entire McWilliams' family is active in a variety of community service projects supporting causes such as Project SOS, Hospice, mentoring inner-city children and coaching youth sports.
