Bezos: Nook E-Book Lending Feature Is 'Sophie's Choice'
E-book sharing offers one of the more intriguing differences between the Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) Kindle and the Nook from Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS)—and, it turns out, a chance for Jeff Bezos to critique the upstart. After telling an interviewer for the NYT magazine that he would stick to...
Kindle's Gift For The Holidays? Native PDF
Until today one of the biggest differences between the Kindle 2 and its top wireless e-reader competitors—aside from sheer availability during the holidays—was the inability to use the Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) for native PDFs. Some PDFs could be converted to read on the KIndle but as some users know...
Barnes & Noble Won't Sell Nook To Go In All Stores
Its 700-plus U.S. stores should give Barnes & Noble an edge in the contest for e-reader dollars but many won’t be selling the actual Nook on site. Instead, I was told as a customer, the booksellers will order a device for in-store customers from the BN.com website to be...
Amazon Combines Kindle 2, Global; AT&T Replaces Sprint On New Models; International DX In 2010
That $20 price drop for the international Kindle goes a little deeper than the obvious competitive move; it was the company’s way of signaling that Kindle 2 and global Kindle are the same device. The conceit that there were two was a distinction without a difference save in one...
IRex's Hamilton Details Plans For Publishers; NewspaperDirect, News Stand, Storefronts
For the last couple of years, Amazon’s Kindle has owned the market—a very small one, to be sure—when it comes to delivering subscriptions to U.S. e-readers. It’s also irked publishers with a 70-30 rev share in the retailer’s favor and by retaining control of customer relationships, sending them scurrying...
Amazon Piles On Kindle Fees, Increases Book Costs Outside U.S.
The international Kindlle is starting to look like a virtual ATM for Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN). Not only will U.S. Whispernet users have to pay $5 a week for accessing their subscriptions, as we reported yesterday, and $2 per book download, downloads of single issues run $2. The fee for...
Using The International Kindle Could Rack Up Fees
Not only does the new international Kindle cost more than its U.S. counterpart, owners who want to take advantage of the wireless connectivity will be paying more for it. In addition to the $2 per-book fee for non-U.S. downloads, paidContent has learned from Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) that it will...
Amazon Goes Global With World Kindle; Cuts U.S. Price
For all of you who have asked over the years when the Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) Kindle would be available outside the U.S., the answer is finally “now.” The Amazon World Kindle is now being sold for $279 with international 3G wireless covering more than 100 countries and territories—and it...
A Tale Of Two Books: Dan Brown Sells Big On Kindle, Kennedy's 'True Compass' Can't Be Found
It could change—and probably will when the first flurry is over—but, as I type, the Kindle edition of Dan Brown’s latest thriller The Lost Symbol is outselling the hardback on Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN). Meanwhile, Ted Kennedy’s True Compass, the other hot book release this week, can’t be bought via...
No Way To Go Mass Market With $199 E-Readers
Never mind all the digits and ink being expended on e-readers—until the price comes down to $150 and below, the number of devices sold won’t be close to creating a mass market. Heck, despite all the attention to Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN), Sony (NYSE: SNE) and other efforts, only 6...

Jeff Bezos has always been interested in anything that can be revolutionized by computers. Intrigued by the amazing growth in use of the Internet, Jeff created a business model that leveraged the Internet's unique ability to deliver huge amounts of information rapidly and efficiently. In 1994 he founded Amazon.com, Inc., now the leading online retailer that offers services which traditional retailers cannot: lower prices, authoritative selection, and a wealth of product information. Before heading West to start Amazon.com, Jeff worked at the intersection of computer science and finance, helping build one of the most technically sophisticated quantitative hedge funds on Wall Street for D. E. Shaw & Co. He also led the development of computer systems that helped manage more than $250 billion in assets for Bankers Trust Company. He graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa in electrical engineering and computer science from Princeton University in 1986.
