Currently a high school junior in Minneapolis, MN, Chris is a member of the football and wrestling team, and also coaches a youth wrestling team. Diabetes has played a strong role in Chris's future career choices. He plans on going to a college with strong public health program. A self-described "total science geek", Chris plans on going to medical school and hopes to get both an MD and a Masters degree so he can become an epidemiologist. Chris has participated in numerous events designed to raise awareness about diabetes, including serving as a panelist at a forum about young people and diabetes, as well as appearing on a local television show to discuss how diabetes has affected his life as a teenager and student athlete. Chris and his family have participated in several ADA fundraising events, including the Community Campaign for Diabetes and Step Out for Diabetes. Like many other Diabetes Advocates, Chris believes that our federal government should devote more resources to finding a cure for diabetes, so that he and many other kids like him will no longer have to live with this disease.
Christina Waddle has worked in the non-profit industry for 20 years, and is currently working for the American Diabetes Association. She joined V&V in 2003, when she stumbled across it through the non-profit she was working for at the time. The combination of her deep background in the arts and V&V's mission to break down barriers between the general public and the disabled caused Christina to immediately join. Christina is a member of the Finance Committee. She has her degrees in music and performed professionally for a number of years. She also enjoys driving her convertible, the arts, going to museums and galleries, cooking, and literature.
Ms Kruger is long-time volunteer with the American Diabetes Association (ADA). She is chair of the Planning Committee for the ADA's 2004 Call to Congress: Conquer Diabetes. She is past chair of the ADA's Research Foundation and continues to serve on the Research Policy Committee. She is also a past president of Health Care and Education of the ADA and she served as associate editor of Diabetes Spectrum, a journal for diabetes health care professionals that focuses on research-to-practice issues, from 1996 to 2000. Ms Kruger has been a principal investigator on a number of research projects and has written widely on diabetes care, authoring the book The Diabetes Travel Guide (2000). Her awards include the Florence Nightingale Award for Excellence in Research from Michigan's Oakland University, ADA's Rachmeil Levine Award for Distinguished Service, ADA's Award for Outstanding Service in Diabetes Research Funding, and the ADA's Wendell Mayes Award.
Actress Elizabeth Perkins spent more than a decade feeling constantly run down and having doctor after doctor tell her there was absolutely nothing wrong. Then, in 2005, at the age of 44, she finally learned that she had type 1 diabetes. Diagnosed while filming the first season of her critically acclaimed Showtime series Weeds an instant cult smash she initially struggled to accept her illness, hiding her disease from coworkers and giving herself insulin injections on the sly, alone in her on-set trailer. Today, Perkins has come a long way, both in getting a handle on her diabetes and in her much-admired turn as Celia Hodes Weeds' resident acid-tongued tart of a suburban housewife, whose best friend is the neighborhood drug dealer which has earned her two best supporting actress Emmy nominations in the past two years. This fall, on hiatus from the show and taking some much-needed "me time" to putter around the garden and helm carpool, the blunt, charismatic 47-year-old mother of four spoke about handling diabetes in Hollywood, why she can't wait to get an insulin pump, and how her diagnosis ended up changing her life for the better.
Locally, she is committed to the diabetes community of Orange County, California. As a diabetes health care professional, Heather specializes in pediatric research and family education. She has also chaired the "Diabetes: From Head to Toe" educational conference that serves Hispanics/Latinos at high risk or who have diabetes for seven years held in the heart of the community. In addition, she serves the Hispanic/Latino population through her integral role as a member of the Santa Ana Feria de Salud Por Tu Familia committee held annually. Nationally, Heather has made her commitment to diabetes known. At the ADA's 2006 Call to Congress, she brought 50 letters from her local Latino community to pass through Senator Barbara Boxer to President George Bush. At this year's Call to Congress, Heather
As a volunteer in Dallas, Texas, Jennifer has proven to truly be the face of an ADA volunteer. She has promoted and provided free community glucose and foot screenings for ADA with her new company, One Source Medical Solutions. As a Board Certified Pedorthist, she plays host to monthly "Defeet Diabetes" classes that are free and open to the public to educate on foot ulcer prevention. As an ADA Diabetes Advocate, she has used her voice and her actions to make a difference.

John Pipe comes from a family who refuses to give up the fight. A direct descendant of Sitting Bull, this ADA volunteer has been battling type 1 diabetes for more than forty years. At the end of the month, John will continue his fight at ADA's Call to Congress in Washington, DC. He will join hundreds of other Diabetes Advocates from around the country to urge Congress to do much more to combat the diabetes epidemic in this country. As a Native American, John hopes Congress will reauthorize the Special Diabetes Program (SDP), which helps implement diabetes prevention and awareness programs in this disproportionately-affected population.
Eager to find a fun way of exercising, Jon joined ADA's Tour de Cure as an individual rider. After several years of fundraising for Tour, Jon saw that he was raising just as much money as the top fundraising teams. He recruited his wife, two children and several friends to form "Team Purple," named after the Northwestern University Wildcats. Last year, Jon and Team Purple proudly surpassed $50,000 in cumulative support for the ADA, adding to their personal fundraising records from past rides.

Kathy Rogers, ADA's Executive Director, Maryland, remarked "Through Lorrie's support and leadership, the Baltimore Leadership Council has engaged many high level people to participate on the council and other events that raise the awareness and profile of ADA. Her leadership was instrumental in our ability to host a very successful Address to the Business Community with high level CEOs serving as hosts and speakers of the event. She has been a large factor in taking the Leadership Council from a glorified 'walk committee' to an executive level group." Liang worked closely with Kathy to identify and recruit a higher level of council members for 2007. She enthusiastically attended the Community Volunteer Leadership Conference meeting in November 2006 and committed herself to helping launch Maryland's First Father of the Year event. Liang is credited with much of the success of the Father of the Year event. She was able to bring a very credible and well known honoree on board and this helped bring additional honorees. She hosted the VIP reception in her home and recruited her company, friends, and colleagues in other companies to sponsor and attend the gala. Last but not least, her passion is making a difference in the lives of the children at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. She is leading the charge alongside Kathy in developing a grass roots program in Baltimore that will address this issue and increase ADA's visibility in the community ten-fold. Lindy Childs is the Clinic and Research coordinator. She sees patients in the clinic Monday - Thursday. She is a graduate of Wichita State University with a Masters in Nursing, Diabetes Nurse Specialist (1982). She is a Certified Diabetes Educator and past president, Health Care and Educator of the American Diabetes Association. Lindy serves as Research Coordinator and co-principal investigator on numerous research studies conducted in the practice. She serves as adjunct faculty in the School of Nursing at Wichita State University. She is a member of the Great Plains Diabetes Research board. She is published in the field of diabetes. Her memberships include the American Diabetes Association, American Nurses Association, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She received the American Diabetes Association Dr. Rachmiel Levine Award in 1997. She served as Editor of the Diabetes Spectrum, a Diabetes journal for health professionals, from 2001 - 2006. She is editor of The Complete Nurses Guide to Diabetes Care published by the ADA in 2005.
Her ADA journey started in 2003, when the president of one of the hospitals where she worked was approached for funding support for an American Diabetes Association event. Instead of providing dollars, he offered Liang to volunteer instead. In her organization, it is expected that staff contribute in a meaningful and significant way to the community. Only three years later, Liang confirmed her commitment to the Association's mission by taking on the role of Chairman of the Maryland Leadership Council. She has also participated in Step Out to Fight Diabetes and meetings with various foundations for grant support of ADA. She feels good that she is able to use her professional skills, networking, and talents for a greater good for the community. Liang's father has Parkinson's disease and her mother's side has a history of diabetes. When she decided to get involved with an organization and to sacrifice time with her family, she was interested in a return of her investment of her time. For Liang, diabetes is huge and she felt her time and energy would have a far greater impact on her community. During her four years of volunteering, it has become more than a passion, it has become her mission. She finds herself educating people on diabetes at cocktail parties, business meetings, and even in Christmas cards.
Mari Ruddy is a member of the Colorado Tour de Cure committee. In 2007, she began the Red Rider Recognition Program where people with diabetes wear a red jersey while riding on the day of the event. The back of the jersey proclaims, "I ride with diabetes!" The Red Rider program is now at many Tour de Cure events nationwide. The Colorado Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is pioneering the Red Strider program in 2008. Mari can be reached at mari@tourdecurecolorado.com mari@tourdecurecolorado.com .
Cypress noted that in New Mexico, it seems like almost everyone has diabetes or knows someone who has it. She finds it frightening and would like to see people become as outraged about diabetes as they are about breast cancer or AIDS. This way pressure could be put on the government to take a more active role in funding and public health advocacy. She didn't think she was articulate enough to talk to legislators. In 2006, she participated in ADA's Call to Congress. She then realized that she was able to speak up and enjoyed it. Being an ADA volunteer has given her some much needed confidence as well as professional and personal growth. An active runner for several years, Cypress has participated in several marathons and half marathons. It is something she and her husband can do together, given their busy schedules. In addition, she gardens, and, during the summer, makes sugar free jams and cooks with all the fruit and vegetables they harvest. She and her husband also participate in their local community farm from which they obtain fresh, local produce. Cypress feels blessed to be in a position to volunteer and to be able to give back to the community. It gives her a sense of purpose to be part of a group that is working toward a worthy goal, and the best part is making new friends. She has made wonderful life-long friends, many of whomshe has known for more than 20 years. She marvels at how she continues to meet the most fascinating people. Through volunteering, she has met some very caring people who have become important role models and are very committed and willing to put themselves out tirelessly for the cause. In 2004, she was honored with the ADA's Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award. She considers this to be one of the greatest honors and experiences in her life. MAGNUM is proud to have the top selling health writer and award winning patient advocate Teri Robert on our Board of Directors as our At Large Support Advisor. She is a well know authority in Migraine disease & headache disorders. In addition to being an outstanding public health advocate she is a the Lead Expert Patient for our friends at MyMigraineConnection.com, a HealthCentral site, where Teri writes cutting edge articles about what is going on in the medical community related to head pain issues. Public health advocate and writer Teri Robert's career moved in this direction when her own Migraine disease spun out of control in the late 90s. Faced with debilitating Migraines and failed medical care, she hit the Internet for answers. She soon found that there was no one site that combined all she was looking for, and that there are sites with excellent information and sites with misinformation. She saw joining the world wide web's popular About.com team as an opportunity to produce their site for head-pain issues as was a way she could help others. She started and ran the About Headaches & Migraines site for nearly seven years before joining the team at MyMigraineConnection. Teri is a nationally well known patient advocate, and was awarded the National Headache Foundation's Patient Partners Award in 2004 for her "ongoing patient education, support and advocacy." She is the At Large Support Advisor for MAGNUM, the National Migraine Association; a member of the Education Committee of O.U.C.H., Organization for Understanding Cluster Headaches; and an advocate for the American Diabetes Association. Her first book, "Living Well with Migraine Disease and Headaches", published by HarperCollins was released November 1, 2005 and is the top selling Migraine book according to Amazon.com. Teri has appeared on CNN Headline News, during a Prime News Tonight health segment, in an educational story about Migraine disease. In addition she has done dozens of radio broadcasts across the nation discussing Migraine disease and headache disorders. The need for current knowledge in this field is critical, especially since there is so much developing research. Teri's Ph.D. is in ethics not medicine, but we believe her Ph.D. background gives her excellent perspective to understand and deconstruct the health industry. To satisfy her need for the most current medical knowledge, Teri is constantly studying medical journals and books and attends medical conferences on a regular basis. She has earned continuing education (CME) hours from various programs offered by such medical non-government organizations the American Headache Society, the Primary Care Network, and the Center for Health Care Education.

Dr. Ali Davis is an Iowa native. She was raised on a small farm 40 miles southwest of Des Moines. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. She achieved her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center in Des Moines. She was very active in medical school; she graduated at the top of her class, served as an ambassador for the University and was a gross anatomy teaching assistant. She completed her residency at the Medical Center of Independence which included rotations in podiatric medicine and surgery.
