American Retirement keeps American retirees happy. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in Brentwood, TN, American Retirement Corporation operates senior living communities. The company has about 75 communities in about 20 US states that can accommodate about 15,000 residents. It provides food services, transportation, social and recreational options, laundry, housekeeping, exercise, and healthcare services. About a third of the facilities are company-owned; the rest are franchised. The company has annual revenue of about $495 million and employs about 10,400 people. In March 2006 it completed the acquisition of four senior living communities from affiliates of Cypress Senior Living, Inc. for an aggregate purchase price of $146.3 million. The communities are located in Arlington, Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas and Leawood, Kansas.
