Cliff Carson [send him email papasmom@sat-co.net ] is a retired Quality Engineering/Management Professional living in Arkansas. He is an MS Operations Management Graduate of the University of Arkansas and is a Senior Member of The American Society for Quality. He and his wife are taking it easy and enjoy visits by their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Cliff hase been active in promotion of causes for the societal good. He was co-founder of an ASQ section in Arkansas, a Co-Founder and Charter member of the Arkansas Quality Council, and Co-Founder and Initial Program Chair for the First Annual Arkansas Quality Conference (2007 was its 20th year). He has spent time as a volunteer teacher in High School and College, and initiated a program to bring adult education (basic education through college degree) in the South Arkansas area. This effort resulted in programs shared by several Arkansas Universities, Community Colleges, VoTechs. Cliff co-formed and acted as a commissioner of a water district for a parched, low-income area in Arkansas, wrote boiler plate business plans for the State of Arkansas to be used for the benefit of very small business start-ups, and held seminars for the state of Arkansas for Industry providing Quality Tools training (SPC, TQM, DOE) for process improvement in small Arkansas businesses. Cliff is an avid reader and student of world events. He has concluded that our American way of life is being compromised by those that would place party loyalty, special interests, greed, and personal influence above the good of America. It is because of this conviction that he began to write and work for the Populist cause, a cause that advocates a return to morality and fidelity of leadership, committed to rule by law - our Constitution.

Karen Gerstl brings a passion for performance improvement to every assignment. It's a contagious attitude. Her ability to pass along the excitement and empowerment of creating successful change is just one reason she is able to achieve such dramatic positive results for her clients. Ms. Gerstl is intelligent, creative and accessible. She's also highly analytical and technically savvy. While her left brain cuts to the core, her right engages others to follow. Her tools and approaches to performance improvement were developed over a 20-year career as a highly successful executive, during which time she turned around departments, divisions and companies. For her, each executive assignment was an opportunity to test and advance her approach to improving individual and organizational performance. At age twenty-three, Karen launched a successful precious metals design business. Six years later, she was engaged to stabilize a floundering metals casting company. It was there that she gained her first exposure to the design of software logic, program specifications and performance reporting. She orchestrated a reorganization and turnaround of this business, producing a 100% increase in revenue within three years. Her next executive challenge was the redesign and turnaround of the manufacturing operation of a mass producer of consumer goods. She met the challenge and within 2 years, revenue tripled. Subsequently, Karen held senior management positions including executive vice president of operations, and has served as director of manufacturing, product engineering, planning and quality assurance. Her work, in each, resulted in improved competitive position, growth and increased profit for her employers' businesses. This experience created the foundation for Karen's approach to improving the performance of organizations through their people, organizational culture, business processes and ability to create successful change. She launched Leap Strategies in 1998 and has helped clients manufacturing, retail, service and professional organizations create extraordinary improvements in business performance. A graduate of The City College of New York, Karen earned a Certificate of Process Mastery from Dr. Michael Hammer, the father of "reengineering" and the "process enterprise." She is a volunteer mentor, business skills trainer and speaker for the non-profit sector and a member of the American Society for Quality, the Project Management Institute, the Institute of Management Consultants, the New York Human Resource Planning Society, the International Furnishings and Design Association and a former national board member of the Women's Jewelry Association. Karen has served as an expert witness in the areas of management, manufacturing and quality assurance. Her articles have appeared in various trade publications.

Raymond Palys is President of Lignan Research, LLC a company specializing in research, development and manufacture of novel lignan based phytochemicals for over-the-counter (OTC) application. Lignan Research is the first company in the world to isolate, concentrate, purify, and standardize lignans in the introduction of the lignan-based nutraceutical Brevail . Raymond brings to Lignan Research extensive senior-level management experience in a variety of industries including service, health care, and manufacturing. He received his BS from Northern Illinois University and his MBA from Loyola University of Chicago. Prior to joining Lignan Research, he was Vice-President of Consulting for J. Bergman & Associates, a management consulting firm in San Diego, California. As a consultant, he advised over 100 companies in the areas of organizational restructuring, management development, and strategic planning. In health care, he was a Regional Manager for TriCare, a publicly held occupational health care company in Irvine, California. He also co-founded QMA, a medical management company, in San Diego, California. In manufacturing, he held management positions in industrial engineering, operations, and marketing with Ryerson, the nation's largest steel distributor, in Chicago, Illinois. Raymond possesses a strong passion for disease prevention, particularly the "War Against Cancer." His understanding and awareness of cancer is deeply rooted in his personal experiences. In 1998 he lost his wife Deborah, 31 years of age, to breast cancer. Deborah battled the aggressive non-hereditary disease for 3 years. In 2001, his sister Renee was diagnosed with breast cancer. A startling statistic is that approximately 90% of breast cancer diagnosis is non-hereditary, and potentially preventable. Raymond is particularly motivated by scientific research that has established a link between dietary lignan ingestion and reduction of risk for breast, reproductive and related cancers. The Breast Cancer Prevention Foundtion was founded in the memory of his late wife, Deborah Demos Palys, to fund scientific and clinical research in the area of breast cancer prevention. A percentage of Brevail sales are donated to this foundation.

This work encompassed change management consulting and developing a wide range of tools and processes, such as employee and customer surveys, diversity assessment tools and measures, and a business assessment based upon the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. Russ also headed a team that designed Amoco's approach to Strategic Scorecarding, a process that was benchmarked and recognized internationally as a best practice. When Amoco was acquired by BP, Russ left to join McDonald's Corporation, where he became a Practice Leader and Director, Organization Effectiveness & Assessment. At McDonald's, Russ led a three-person unit that provided consulting on organization effectiveness and measurement within the US and often internationally. His team oversaw administration and reporting of employee surveys within the US System, along with research relative to unit effectiveness. This included designing and managing a multi-year Linkage Research Project that determined the impact of management practices upon business outcomes. The study, encompassing 13,000 restaurants and 47,000 customers, was the largest ever conducted at McDonald's, revealing the "drivers" of both McDonald's customer experience and employment experience, as well as the relationship of these factors to customer count trends and financial results. Russ leveraged the findings of this study in disseminating best practices throughout McDonald's and by managing a project that created a strategic scorecard for the global HR function. Upon leaving McDonald's, Russ founded and currently leads the Employee-Customer Measurement Network, a group of 90 commercial, educational, and public sector organizations. This network is aimed at transferring best practices and educating members in using employee and customer feedback, survey tools, and performance measures to improve organizational results. In the last two years, he has authored or co-authored six white papers covering a range of topics and currently teaches Creativity and Innovation within the Masters program at Northwestern University. His consulting work with new product teams also led him to develop the Innovation Capability Assessment (ICA), a survey tool that permits clients to assess and improve organizational success factors critical to product/process innovation and new product development. Russ participates in a variety of professional organizations, holding memberships in the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, American Society for Quality, and the American Psychological Association's Division 5 Evaluation,...

W. Edwards Deming, named an ASQ Honorary member in 1970 for his role as adviser, consultant, author, and teacher to some of the most influential businessmen, corporations, and scientific pioneers of quality control, is the most widely known proponent of statistical quality control. He has been described variously as a national folk hero in Japan, where he was influential in the spectacular rise of Japanese industry after World War II; as a curmudgeon; as the high prophet of quality control; as an imperious old man; and as founder of the third wave of the Industrial Revolution. Deming was trained as a physicist, taking a doctorate at Yale University in 1928, following previous degrees from the University of Wyoming and the University of Colorado. His extensive list of published works (nearly 200 papers, articles, and books), include early publications on a variety of topics in the field of physics. Later publications reflect his growing interest in the application of statistics. While working as a mathematical physicist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1938, Deming was responsible for courses in math and statistics at the Graduate School of the USDA, and he invited Walter Shewhart to lecture there. Later in I938, Deming moved to the Bureau of the Census, where he was an adviser in sampling. In what is probably the first application of statistical quality control principles to a non-manufacturing problem, Deming brought Shewhart's principles into use on clerical operations for the 1940 census. In 1942, while at the Bureau of the Census, Deming was retained as a consultant to the Secretary of War and was asked by W. Allen Wallis, a statistician at Stanford University, for ideas on ways to aid the war effort. Deming suggested a short course in Shewhart methods to teach the basics of applied statistics to engineers and others. The idea was adopted quickly and enthusiastically, and the first course was held in the summer of 1942. Among the instructors were Deming and Ralph Wareham, and the attendees included Holbrook Working and Eugene L. Grant of Stanford. The courses were repeated many times, often with Deming as instructor. The influence of the courses on the individuals who formed the core of the statistical quality control movement in the United States and who founded ASQ is well known. Because of his work at the USDA and his expertise in statistics, Deming was sent to Japan in 1946 by the Economic and Scientific Section of the War Department to study agricultural production and related problems in the war-damaged nation. He returned to Japan in 1948 to conduct more studies for the occupation forces. During these trips, Deming made contact with Japanese statisticians and developed a lasting admiration and fondness for the Japanese people. Deming convinced Kenichi Koyanagi, one of the founding members of the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), of the potential of statistical methods in the rebuilding of Japanese industry. Koyanagi, in turn, suggested the idea to JUSE, which invited Deming to teach courses in statistical methods to Japanese industry. Under the auspices of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, Deming arrived in Japan to teach in June 1950. He returned five times as teacher and consultant to Japanese industry. Deming successfully influenced a new group of managers who had risen to the top in Japanese business after the war. They were hungry for new ideas to help them correct serious and persistent quality problems. Their interest was in contrast to behavior in the United States, where management was abandoning the precepts learned in the wartime quality control courses. Deming gave his Japanese students not only statistical theory, but also confidence. "I told [Japanese industrialists] Japanese quality could be the best in the world, instead of the worst," he said. Still, many were skeptical. "I was the only man in Japan who believed that Japanese industry could do that." Deming made...

Drawing upon his education in engineering and architecture and the creativity that makes him a talented photographer, Forrest has twice redesigned the Team's offices. He handles all our purchasing, accounting, billing, and personnel matters and supervises IT and facilities functions. He also leads the Team meetings. Forrest is an avid follower of Formula 1 racing. He attended Formula Ford driving school in his youth, but was too tall to make racing a career. He also enjoys travelling, doing yard work and carpentry, entertaining friends and family, restoring old cars and reading history.
