Arch Coal is a coal producer that is engaged in the mining, processing and marketing of bituminous and sub-bituminous coal with low sulfur content. Co. sells substantially all of its coal to power plants, steel mills and industrial facilities. As of Dec 31 2007, Co. operated 18 active mines at 11 mining complexes throughout the U.S. and estimates that its proven and probable coal reserves had an average heat value of approximately 10,000 British thermal units and an average sulfur content of approximately 0.71%. Co. operates through three segments, which are the Powder River Basin, the Western Bituminous region and the Central Appalachia region.
