Jay is a founder of Newbury and has spent more that 24 years in the venture capital industry. At Newbury, Jay focuses on investments in communications systems, semiconductor devices, and software. Some of his investments with Board representation include Netro (acquired by SR Telecom), Fundtech (FNDT), Jacada (JCDA), ViryaNet (VRYA) OnWafer (acquired by KLA-Tencor), Pixim, Scorpio (acquired by 3Com), Ultracom (acquired by Terayon), Precise Software (acquired by Veritas), Silverback Systems (acquired by Brocade), Virtio (acquired by Synopsis), Mysticom (acquired by TranSwitch), Andigilog, and Zenasis. Jay began his venture career in 1982, when he joined Berkeley International Capital, ultimately serving as President. While at Berkeley he led investments in both ECAD and Solomon Designs (which later merged to create Cadence Design (CDNS), Cypress Semiconductor (CYPR), Broderbund Software (acquired by Mattel), Altera Corporation (ALTR) and Cirrus Logic (CRUS). He has previous management experience at Wells Fargo Bank, including Vice President of Global Foreign Exchange Trading, and began his career with AT&T's Operations Research group, which later became part of Lucent. Jay was a Senior Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and is an active speaker and advisor of the Berkeley Entrepreneurs Forum at University of California's Haas School of Business. Jay earned BIE and M.Sc. degrees in Operations Research from Ohio State and a Ph.D. in Management Sciences from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. Originally from Ohio, Jay now lives in the East Bay with his wife. They have two children: a son living and working in the Bay Area and a daughter away at college. Jay is an avid tennis player, skier, and car enthusiast.
