Dave Taylor has led Ball Aerospace as president and chief executive officer since June 2002. He is responsible for all performance aspects of Ball Aerospace, an innovative aerospace and defense contractor of 2,500 employees and approximately $500M in annual sales. Dave previously served as senior vice president and chief operating officer of Ball Aerospace beginning in January 2001. As COO, Dave led a strategic repositioning and refocusing of the company that has resulted in significantly improved operational and financial performance, while increasing the company's ability to engage in its core aerospace and defense markets. Since he became COO and assumed control of the operations of the business, Ball Aerospace has generated record sales, profit and backlog.
Previously, Dave was vice president of Commercial Space Operations (CSO), the first commercially focused space business unit within Ball Aerospace. Dave conceived, advocated, implemented and managed this organization from its inception in 1995. Ball Aerospace has contracted for and or completed seven high-performance LEO remote sensing spacecraft buses including: QuikSCAT delivered in 11 months for JPL and GSFC; QuickBird I and II, sub-meter class commercial imaging spacecraft for EarthWatch, Inc.; ICESAT for GSFC; CLOUDSAT for JPL; and NPP for the NPOESS IPO and GSFC. CSO designed and constructed both QuickBird imaging spacecraft including their sub-meter imagers. Under Dave’s leadership, CSO delivered outstanding financial performance and was profitable in its first year of operations.
Dave was employed at Spar Space Systems Division of Montreal, Quebec, Canada from 1992 to 1995. There, he held a number of executive management positions in operations and marketing including Vice President, Marketing and Vice President, Satellite Systems Business Unit. Dave successfully integrated two existing business units, addressing both commercial fixed-price and government cost-reimbursable type contracts including EOS-AM, Space Station, M-SAT, RADARSAT and Hispasat.
From 1981 to 1992, Dave served in a number of technical and management positions within Ball Aerospace. His accomplishments included: leader of the Ball Aerospace spacecraft preliminary design team, leader of the successful Relay Mirror Experiment operations team for AFWL; systems engineer for the Optical Aircraft Measurement Program for the predecessor to MDA, the Ballistic Missile Defense Center; lead engineer, Controls (Attitude Determination and Control and Reaction Control) for NASA’s Earth Radiation Budget Satellite and significant roles on a number of restricted programs.
Dave began his career as a Project Engineer, Commercial Product Flight Controls with Sperry Flight Systems in Phoenix, Arizona from 1977 to 1981. He has B.S.E.E. and B.S. degrees from Arizona State University and an MBA from the University of Colorado. He has also attended the Stanford/AEA Executive Program for High Technology Companies.
