Off the balance sheet: Bank's new Pounds 50bn scheme to ease credit
The Bank of England will tomorrow publish its annual report and accounts, which will disclose that the 19.3bn of loans made to Northern Rock is still on its books. However, the Treasury said on Friday that the Northern Rock loans would be transferred shortly to the Government's own balance sheet....
Tripartite move to strengthen bank regulation
Moves to learn the lessons of the humiliating run on Northern Rock last autumn were announced by the "tripartite authorities" yesterday. Aiming to produce a "world-class" regulatory system, the Bank of England, the Treasury and the Financial Services Authority jointly agreed on a range of moves aimed at strengthening each...
Northern Rock pays back BoE loans faster than expected
Northern Rock is paying back its loans to the Bank of England much more quickly than expected, new analysis shows, though the rapid repayment could mean extra pain for the mortgage market and the economy. Northern Rock owed the Bank of England 24.1bn on 31 March, a reduction...
House price falls threaten Northern Rock loan repayments
Falls in house prices of as little as 5 per cent a year could put a strain on Northern Rock's plan to pay back the Bank of England's loans and shed its Government guarantees, the nat-ionalised lender's management said yesterday. Ron Sandler, the bank's executive chairman, told the...
FSA battles Mervyn King for right to pull plug on failing banks
The Bank of England and the Financial Services Authority are engaged in a turf war over which regulator should decide when to take control of a failing bank, it emerged yesterday. In evidence to the Commons Treasury select committee, FSA officials insisted that they, as supervisors of the...
Rock shareholders call for inquiry into leak
Northern Rock shareholders are demanding a public inquiry into the dramatic leaking last September of the stricken lender's pleas for emergency funding from the Bank of England. Small investors in the bank say the way in which the mortgage lender's troubles came to light played a major part in its...
Northern Rock ushers its customers to the exit
MORTGAGES Nationalised bank Northern Rock has said that it aims to repay its 24bn debt to the Bank of England by 2010 and no later. The embattled Rock is aiming to raise the funds by "encouraging" its mortgage customers to switch to other lenders. When this...
King to stay as Governor of the Bank for a second term
Despite rumours of rifts with the Government and off-the-record backbiting, the Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, was yesterday warmly invited by the Prime Minister to serve a second five-year term in office, starting on 30 June. Sincere or not, pleasantries were exchanged yesterday in the...
Reluctant Government reappoints King
OUTLOOK To reappoint Mervyn King as Governor of the Bank of England for a second term may have been the right decision, yet the Government will almost certainly have done it through gritted teeth. Behind the scenes, the recriminations have been heated and vitriolic over the disaster of...
Rock nationalisation denounced by Tories
David Cameron has given his strongest indication that the Conservatives would not vote for the nationalisation of Northern Rock if the Government decided to take the bank into public ownership. The Tory leader said nationalisation would be "catastrophic" and that the Government should get the Bank of England...
