John Spain joined the Baton Rouge Area Foundation in June 2003, as Executive Vice President. Prior to joining the Foundation, Mr. Spain served as Managing Director of the Powell Group for eight years and as the Station Manager for WBRZ for 23 years. A civic leader with extensive experience, Mr. Spain has served as President of the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce and as Chairman of the Board for Louisiana Arts and Science Museum as well as the Baton Rouge Area Visitor's Bureau.

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation is governed by directors who are appointed for three-year terms. Members may serve two consecutive terms after which they must rotate off for at least one year. The board is comprised of thirteen at-large directors elected by membership. The Greater Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce, the East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society, the Baton Rouge Bar Association and the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants each appoint two members. The immediate past chairperson of the board serves as a member of the executive committee and ex-officio member of the board, as does the chief executive officer of the Foundation. Founding chairperson John W. Barton Sr. has a permanent seat on the board and its executive committee.
