Dow Jones Description
Bayer is a global enterprise with core competencies in the fields of health care, nutrition and high-tech materials. Our products and services are designed to benefit people and improve their quality of life. At the same time we want to create value through innovation, growth and improved earning power. We already successfully reorganized the Bayer Group and further streamlined our portfolio to create a new Bayer that is focused on its corporate strengths, its customers and the markets of the future. To help us achieve this goal, we then carried out a strategic realignment in order to concentrate in future on three high-potential, agile subgroups with largely independent operations: HealthCare, CropScience and MaterialScience, supported by three service companies. Our operating companies give us the access we need to the growth markets of the future. As an inventor company, we plan to continue setting trends in research-intensive areas. Innovations are the foundation for our competitiveness and our corporate growth, and thus for our success in the future. We believe our technical and commercial expertise entails a duty to contribute to sustainable development ? a principle we wholeheartedly endorse, mindful of its social, ethical and environmental elements. In awareness of our responsibilities as a corporate citizen, we define economy, ecology and social commitment as objectives of equal rank. We seek to retain society?s confidence through performance, flexibility and open communication as we work in pursuit of our overriding corporate goals: to steadily create corporate value and generate high value-added for the benefit of our stockholders, our employees and the community in every country in which we operate.

Klaus Kleinfeld is president and chief executive officer of Alcoa. He joined the company in 2007 as president and chief operating officer and seven months later assumed CEO responsibilities. He has served on Alcoa's board of directors since 2003. Alcoa is a world leader in the production and management of a very sustainable product: aluminum. Nearly 75% of the aluminum ever produced since 1888 is still in use today. The company has been a technology leader since its beginning, providing more than 90% of the aluminum alloys used in aircraft and space flight; helping making automobiles lighter, without compromising safety or performance; manufacturing sheet that created the ultimate recyclable container, the aluminum beverage can; and providing building and construction industry materials that help further the green building movement. In addition, to serving customers in these markets, Alcoa also markets wheels, fastening systems, precision and investment castings, and building systems. The company has 97,000 employees in 34 countries. Before coming to Alcoa, Mr. Kleinfeld had a 20-year career with Siemens, the global electronics and industrial conglomerate, based in the U.S. and Germany, where he served as chief executive officer of Siemens AG starting in 2005. During his tenure, Mr. Kleinfeld presided over a dramatic transformation of the company, reshaping the company's portfolio around three high growth areas, resulting in increase of revenues and market capitalization nearly doubled. Prior to his service on the Managing Board of Siemens AG, Mr. Kleinfeld was President and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Corporation, its U.S. arm and the company's largest region. In addition to serving on Alcoa's board, he is a member of the board of Bayer AG. On the personal front, Mr. Kleinfeld was born in Bremen, Germany and educated at the University of Goettingen and University of Wuerzburg, both in Germany. He holds a Ph.D in strategic management and master's degree in business administration. In his leisure time, he enjoys skiing, tennis, the arts and is a marathon runner.
