Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc. was founded in 1961 when George G. Beasley built WPYB-AM in Benson, North Carolina. In 1966, Beasley sold WPYB to purchase the larger WFMC-AM in Goldsboro, North Carolina, a 'trade-up' transaction that was to recur numerous times over the next four decades. Early on, the Beasley Broadcast Group developed a knack for acquiring and improving under-performing radio stations. During the 1960's and early 1970's, it purchased stations in Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Indiana and Ohio. A highlight was the 1976 purchase of WDMT-FM in Cleveland, which marked Beasley Broadcast Group's first operation of a major market station. In the following years, Beasley Broadcast Group continued to expand, adding stations primarily in the eastern United States, as well as in markets like Austin, Texas and Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1989, Beasley Broadcast Group entered the nation's top 10 radio markets through the acquisition of KRTH AM/FM in Los Angeles, a purchase that generated substantial revenue and cash flow for the company. Since that time, Beasley Broadcast Group has broadened and refined its large market operations, entering leading markets including Philadelphia, Miami, Las Vegas and Atlanta, while divesting its Los Angeles assets. Bruce G. Beasley, age 49, has served as Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc.’s President and Chief Operating Officer since 1997, Co-Chief Operating Officer from February 2001 until February 2006, and as a director since 1980. Allen B. Shaw, age 63, joined Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc. as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and Co-Chief Operating Officer in February 2001 as part of the Company’s acquisition of Centennial Broadcasting. Effective February 1, 2006, Mr. Shaw serves solely as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. From 1990 to February 2001, Mr. Shaw was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Centennial Broadcasting and he resumed those positions with a new entity called Centennial Broadcasting effective October 1, 2004. Mike Cooney is responsible for the general supervision and oversight of all engineering and technology matters for Beasley?s forty-four radio station portfolio and is integrally involved with the Company?s HD Radio? initiative. A Certified Engineer for the Society of Broadcast Engineers (CBRE), Federal Communications first class license holder and certified electronic technician, Mr. Cooney presently is on the Technical Committee for the Broadcast Traffic Consortium (BTC) and the 2009 NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference Committee. Previous to joining Beasley, he was Director of Engineering / IT for Entercom Radio in Kansas City, where he was the design engineer and project manager of one of the largest radio facilities in the United States.

Walter Sturdivant, who began his broadcast career at WCHL, has returned as the President and General Manager of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro radio station. He bagan his duties on January 3. After receiving his BA degree in Broadcast Journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1981, Sturdivant joined WCHL and Tar Heel Sports Network as a reporter before accepting a job as news director for Curtis Media stations in Laurinburg. Sturdivant now comes back to Chapel Hill from Beasley Broadcast Group where he was Vice President, General Manager for three of their radio stations and later VP/Director of Sales for their six-station group in the Fayettville area. A native of Hamlet in Richmond County, North Carolina, Walter and his wife Derrell are the parents of two children, Jonathan, 21, and Mallory, 13.
