The Board of Directors of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX) announced today that it has elected Edward J. Ludwig Chairman of the Board, effective immediately following the Annual Meeting of Shareholders to be held on February 13, 2002. Mr. Ludwig will succeed Clateo Castellini, who will continue as a member of the Board.
In addition to serving as Chairman, Mr. Ludwig, 50, also will continue as BD's President and Chief Executive Officer. He has been President since June 1999 and Chief Executive Officer since January 2000. Mr. Ludwig joined the Company in 1979 and has held a variety of business and corporate positions of increasing responsibility over his 22-year tenure with BD. Mr. Ludwig is a graduate of Holy Cross College and Columbia University Business School.

Considine, 50, joins BD from American Home Products (AHP), where he was Senior Vice President, Finance. He will be responsible for executive management and oversight of BD’s global financial operations, reporting directly to Ludwig.
During Considine’s 17 years at AHP he served in various financial management positions, including leading the company’s Controllership, Treasury, Investor Relations, and Internal Audit groups. He was also a member of AHP’s Finance, Retirement and Operations Committees and a member of the Board of Directors of Immunex (NASDAQ: IMNX), AHP’s majority-owned biopharmaceutical subsidiary. Prior to joining AHP, Considine spent ten years with the public accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Company.
A native of Stamford, Connecticut, Considine attended Villanova and Pace Universities. He is a Board Member of the Animal Cancer Foundation and an honorary Board Member of St. Vincent’s Services.

Vincent A. Forlenza, 49, is position of President, BD Biosciences, effective immediately. Mr. Forlenza, who joined BD in 1980, had served most recently as the Company's Senior Vice President, Technology, Strategy and Development.
Since joining BD, Mr. Forlenza has held various positions of increasing responsibility in the United States and Europe. Of note, he served four years as President of BD Diagnostic Systems, a worldwide business focused on developing and marketing infectious disease diagnostic platforms. During this assignment Mr. Forlenza was instrumental in the early development of two significant new infectious disease diagnostics systems, BD ProbeTec™ ET and BD Phoenix™. In addition to his new responsibilities with BD Biosciences, Mr. Forlenza will continue to lead BD Technologies.
Mr. Forlenza holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University and a MBA from the Wharton Graduate School, University of Pennsylvania.

Paranicas, 49, joined BD in 1981. He was most recently director, Corporate Development and Strategic Investments. From August through November 2000 he served as director, Investor Relations. Prior to this, Mr. Paranicas was associate general counsel and assistant secretary, where his primary emphasis was in mergers and acquisitions, real estate and corporate and commercial law.

Mr. Sherman joins BD from Wyeth, where he served most recently as Vice President and Associate General Counsel. He joined Wyeth in 1990 and held various legal positions of increasing responsibility during his tenure there, leading to his appointment as Associate General Counsel in 2001. Prior to Wyeth, Mr. Sherman was a partner with the New York City law firm of Shereff, Friedman, Hoffman & Goodman (now Swidler, Berlin, Shereff, Friedman, LLP).

Ben Verwer, Manager, joined BD in 1991 as a Staff Scientist. He has since made many contributions to BD Biosciences' product line, among others FACSCount, FACSDiva, FACSAria, and Cytometric Bead Array. Ben has led functional teams, program teams and the program management organization and has experience in post-M&A integration. Ben has a PhD in Physics from Delft University of Technology and an M.B.A. from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, both in Holland. Ben is located at our facility in San Jose, California. Jon K. Daigle, Manager, joined BD in June 2006. Prior to joining BD, Jon accumulated business experience across multiple industries, including medical devices, consulting, and aerospace. He worked as Manager of Business Development at InterSonics, a medical device startup, where he performed financial analysis and market research during the company's initial period of capital raising. Most recently, Jon worked for Carrot Capital Healthcare Ventures as an Associate while completing his M.B.A. at Columbia Business School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Washington State University, an M.B.A from Columbia Business School, and a Master of International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. Monica Fernand, Manager, joined BD in July 2005 after interning with the group while she was completing her MBA program at Columbia Business School. Prior to graduate school, she worked as an Associate for three years at a Big Four accounting firm where she managed and led due diligence teams in the securitization of commercial-backed securities. Monica also worked as a Consultant for two years at a technology firm within the real estate industry where she advised clients in transactions and portfolio management. Monica earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from the Wayne Calloway School of Business and Accountancy at Wake Forest University.

Mrs. Ugglas, a native and resident of Sweden, served as Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1991 to 1994. She is a past chairman of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe and was elected to the European Parliament in 1995.
Prior to her tenure as foreign minister, Mrs. Ugglas was for twenty years a member of the Swedish Parliament and served on committees in the areas of employment, industry and commerce, and foreign affairs. She also served as a member of the Council of Europe. Mr. Overlock, 53, was elected a partner at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in 1982, was the head of the firm’s Mergers and Acquisition Department from 1985-1996, as well as co-head of its Investment Banking Division, from 1990 to 1996. Mr. Scott, 51, is the President of TIAA-CREF Life Insurance Company and Executive Vice President of TIAA-CREF. Prior to joining TIAA-CREF in November 2000, Mr. Scott served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Horizon/Mercy, a joint Medicaid managed care program between Mercy Health Plan of Pennsylvania and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New Jersey.
Mr. Scott is a graduate of DePaul University, which honored him earlier this year with its School for New Learning David O. Justice Award. Among his civic and professional affiliations, Mr. Scott serves on the boards of the American Heart Association, the Committee for Economic Development, the Health Insurance Association of America and is a member of the American Council of Life Insurers Executive Roundtable. Dr. Fraser-Liggett, 50, is President and Director of The Institute for Genomic Research in Rockville, Maryland, a not-for-profit center dedicated to deciphering and analyzing genomes – the complex molecular chains that constitute each organism’s unique genetic heritage. As leader of teams that sequenced the genomes of several microbial organisms, Dr. Fraser-Liggett has helped initiate the era of comparative genomics. Dr. Fraser-Liggett is one of the most highly cited scientists in microbiology and is an international leader in the field of microbial genomics and forensics.
Dr. Fraser-Liggett received a B.S. in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. After one year of post-doctoral training at SUNY-Buffalo, Dr. Fraser-Liggett was appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Molecular Immunology at Buffalo’s Roswell Park Memorial Institute. She then spent eight years at the National Institutes of Health. In 1989, Dr. Fraser-Liggett was appointed Chief of the Section of Molecular Neurobiology at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and in 1992 she joined The Institute for Genomic Research as Vice President for Research and Director, Microbial Genomics.
Dr. Fraser-Liggett currently serves on the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity and the National Research Council’s Committee on Metagenomics. She is a member of the Editorial Boards of The Journal of Biological Chemistry and Comparative and Microbial Genomics. She has over 220 publications in leading scientific journals and is a reviewer for nine journals. Among the multitude of honors she has received are the New York Academy of Science’s Diversity in Science Award for Leadership and Scientific Excellence (2005), the Society for Industrial Microbiology’s Charles Thom Award (2005), a Fellowship at the American Academy of Microbiology (2005) and Maryland’s Top 100 Women Circle of Excellence Award (2004).

Mr. DeGraan, 59, is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Gillette Company, a position to which he was named in July 2000. Ron is a graduate of the University of Glasgow, Oxford University and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has carried out basic biomedical research at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, where he was a European Exchange Fellow of the Royal Society of London, at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and at the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia. Prior to joining CHL Medical Partners in 1997, Ron was a general partner at Hancock Venture Partners (now HarbourVest Partners) where he invested in sixteen healthcare companies, eleven of which have become public companies. Ron has served on the boards of seventeen companies including General Surgical Innovations, Inc., (acquired by Tyco International Corp.), GeneOhm Sciences, Inc. (acquired by Becton Dickinson), and Protometrix, Inc., (acquired by Invitrogen Corp.). He was founding CEO of Protometrix, Inc. as well as CGI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and was formerly Chairman of the Board of Amicus Therapeutics, Inc. Ron currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of OpGen, Inc. and on the boards of BIKAM Pharmaceuticals, Inc., BioRelix, Inc. and POINT Biomedical Corp.
