Dow Jones Description
We are a product-focused biopharmaceutical company with two approved cancer therapeutics. In December 2004, the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, approved our lead cancer product, clofarabine, for the treatment of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL, in patients who are relapsed or refractory to at least two prior regimens of treatment. We believe clofarabine is the first new medicine initially approved in the United States, or U.S., for children with leukemia in more than a decade. Clofarabine has received Orphan Drug designation in the U.S. and in the European Union, or E.U. Genzyme Corporation contracted with us and acquired the U.S. and Canadian marketing rights for clofarabine for certain cancer indications and Genzyme currently controls U.S. development of clofarabine in these indications. Bioenvision is now a fully owned subsidiary of Genzyme Corporation.
