Dow Jones Description

Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are the original architects of pre-paid healthcare financing, the forerunner of today's private health insurance system in the U.S. The Blue Cross brand originated in 1929 when Baylor Hospital's Dr. Justin Ford Kimball introduced a plan in Dallas to guarantee local school teachers 21 days of hospital care for $6 a year. The roots of the Blue Shield brand go back to 1917, when railroad and lumber workers in the Pacific Northwest began paying a monthly fee for physician services. The Blue Shield symbol was adopted to represent these services in 1939.

Tonja got started with the Ride For Roswell through work, thanks to her boss, who also volunteers. She is a health educator and works as the team leader of health promotion for BlueCross BlueShield of WNY and BlueShield of NENY. "Promoting health and chronic disease (cancer) prevention is my work and my passion. I have also enlisted many of my colleagues to help. This year will be my sixth year volunteering and the fourth leading the 9-mile route. In the Fall of 2001, after my second year of volunteering, my Aunt Charlotte passed away from cancer. She was a remarkably kind woman who died much too young. Aunt Char is sadly missed by her 6 children, and their families, including 17 grandchildren, along with her husband, step-daughter, brothers, sister, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, and nieces and nephews. She lived along the 9 mile route in Amherst and so I feel her presence every June when leading that ride. I dedicate my volunteer hours to her."
