Dow Jones Description

Books Inc. is a locally owned and operated independent bookseller with 10 locations in California. Books Inc.'s origin dates back to the Gold Rush Days of 1851 when Anton Roman struck it rich in Shasta City, California and set himself up in business selling books. That small bookstore was moved, bought, sold, burned, rebuilt, renamed and became Books Inc., as we know it today, in 1946. Lew Lengfeld, owner since 1946, passed away in 1996 and left Books Inc. to a few trusted employees. The good news was, he left them the business; the bad news was he left them the business just as the national chain stores were discovering and colonizing the West Coast. The impact of this change in climate within the book trade was the closure of ten of the twelve Books Inc. stores and filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy in an effort to restructure and save the company. By this time only Michael Grant and Michael Tucker remained as owners. They were determined not only to survive, but to thrive. The company emerged from Chapter 11 in August of 1997 with 4 stores and a 5th was added in 1998. All integral systems had been revamped and computerized, from buying to accounting. Publishers began to take notice as this Phoenix rose from the ashes. Tragically, Mike Grant died suddenly in August of 2000, just as the company was poised for further expansion. Michael Tucker assumed the role of President and carried out the plan. The external focus of Books Inc. is now and always has been customer service. ...

Sadie Hess is the co-founder and SLS Director for COMPASS, LLC. She first learned about the SLS program during her college internship, serving as a caregiver for two clients with a local agency. In 1996, when that agency decided they could no longer provide services, Sadie and her business partner knew they needed to take action to protect the clients they had come to know, respect, and serve. Within two months, they founded COMPASS and opened the doors to ten clients in Redding, CA. Today, COMPASS, LLC serves over 50 clients in five counties, still serving the two ladies who introduced her to the program over 12 years ago. COMPASS has also adapted Supported Living into a program that successfully serves the elderly population. Working together with her husband Eric, she counts it her joy to professionally and personally be committed to COMPASS. Eric and Sadie have two children, Trinity and Ryan, who complete her joy.

Peter MacDonald came to FOR during the summer of 2001 as a volunteer placement with the Work Adjustment and Employment Support Services(WAESS) program of CAMH. This was his return to the world of work after an eight year battle with bipolar disorder. His main duties in the FOR office are to keep the office running smoothly and to help keep Karyn organized. When Karyn is out of the office or unable to answer the phone, he is the one who takes your call for her. One of his first tasks when he started at FOR was to clean up the mailing lists Karyn used and which were kept in several Microsoft Word files and a Wordperfect file. To organize the mailing lists he created a Microsoft Access database which is still in use and makes production of mailing labels for mail outs much easier. After being shut out of FOR during the SARS crisis in 2003, Peter returned to FOR as the webmaster and program assistant. During the summer of 2004, after reading several books on the subject of Cascading Style Sheets, he redesigned the FOR website to look the way it does now. The new navigation system for the site featuring the pop out menus on the left were based on an example in the book More Eric Meyer on CSS by Eric A. Meyer. Peter lists as one of his accomplishments during the rewrite of the website was converting the code used to be valid XHTML 1.0 code and getting it validate with the standards set out by the www.w3c.org, the international body which sets the standards the world wide web works by. His other big change to the website was removing all but a small java script file from the website and implementing all the menus you see with cascading style sheets. During the summer and fall of 2006 he converted the site to user server side includes and brought the XHTML code up to the latest standard, XHTML 1.1. He says that one of the nice things about working at FOR is Karyn's enthusiasm for the work she does. She is so excited about the work she does and that FOR does, it is contagious and rubs off on to everyone at FOR. He was a member of the board at Community Resources Connections of Toronto, the Mental Health Case Management Association of Ontario and PSR Ontario(formerly IAPSRS Ontario). During the summer, Peter also works a day a week as a volunteer bike mechanic at Sandy's Bikes and Books at 115 Laird Drive in Toronto. When not keeping things under control at FOR, Peter can be found out cycling in the summer or out snowshoeing in the winter. When he has enough time, he wants to develop his own website, www.petermacdonald.ca, where he hopes to showcase his abilities as a web designer and show what can be done with simple XHTML code and...
