BridgeHead's history is not only interesting but helps to explain how we achieved our remarkable technology portfolio and competitive advantage. Our company is built around a core of engineering and executive staff who have worked together on storage management in large IT environments since the late 1980s. We were originally the storage management lab for Raxco/UIS, the largest independent software vendor for the Digital Equipment Corporation marketplace. Over a thousand large DEC customers used our archiving, backup, HSM, and media management products to ensure data protection, compliancy with regulations, and automation of very complex and media-intensive operations. This market not only had rigorous standards for the availability of data and compliancy, but it was also one of the first places where all the elements of modern IT appeared. VMS was the original Storage Area Network built around shared storage devices and clustered CPUs. DEC users had large-scale networks supporting UNIX systems. The DEC Alpha was the first platform to support Windows NT in production. The problems we solved with this customer base included backing up data and managing media for massively distributed networks, built on a variety of platforms the same problems that affect the open systems and Windows markets we know today.
