Paul E. Freiman is Chairman of the Board of Penwest. He is also President and Chief Executive Officer of Neurobiological Technologies, Inc. (NTI). He is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Syntex Corporation (Syntex), where he had a long and successful career and was instrumental in the sale of Syntex to Roche Holdings for $5.3 billion. He is credited with much of the marketing success of Syntex's lead product, Naprosyn, and was responsible for moving the product to over-the-counter status, marketed by Proctor & Gamble as Aleve. Mr. Freiman currently serves as chairman of the board of SciGen Pte. Ltd. and also serves on the boards of Calypte Biomedical Corporation, NeoPharm Inc., NovaCal Pharmaceuticals, PHYTOS Inc. and Otsuka America Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He has been chairman of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers of America Association (PhRMA) and has also chaired a number of key PhRMA committees. Mr. Freiman holds a B.S. degree from Fordham University and an honorary doctorate from the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy.

G. Steven Burrill has been involved in the growth and prosperity of the biotechnology industry for over 40 years. An early pioneer, Mr. Burrill is one of the original architects of the industry and one of its most avid and sustained developers. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Pharmasset (NASDAQ: VRUS) and is a member of the Boards of Directors of Catalyst Biosciences, DepoMed (NASDAQ: DEPO), Intranasal, Phytomedics, Proteogenix, Proventys, Targacept (NASDAQ: TRGT) and XDx. Prior to founding Burrill & Company in 1994, he spent 28 years with Ernst & Young, directing and coordinating the firm's services to clients in the biotechnology/life sciences/high technology/manufacturing industries worldwide. In 2002, Mr. Burrill was recognized as the biotech investment visionary by the prestigious Scientific American magazine (The Scientific American 50). Mr. Burrill is a founder and currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for the National Medals of Science and Technology. Additionally, he serves as Chairman of the Board on Campaign for Medical Research as well as Chairman of the San Francisco Mayor?s Biotech Advisory Committee (MAYBAC). Other not-for-profit activities include serving on the Boards of Directors for the Bay Area Science Infrastructure Consortium, BayBio, California Healthcare Institute, The Exploratorium, Genetics Policy Institute, The Kellogg Center for Biotechnology, Kramden Institute, The National Health Museum, and Research!America. He also serves as an advisor on the MIT Center for Biomedical Innovation.

Prior to joining Burrill & Company, Dr. Hanham was a co-founder and Vice President of Clinical & Regulatory Affairs at InterMune Pharmaceuticals, and prior to that, the Senior Director for Oncology Product Development at Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and the Medical Director for Celtrix Pharmaceuticals. She has also worked for Becton Dickinson in both regulatory and clinical affairs for the monoclonal antibody program, and as a regulatory toxicologist with the Health Protection Branch of Health and Welfare Canada. Dr. Hanham holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia, a MSc from Simon Fraser University, and a BSc from the University of Toronto. She was also Board Certified in Toxicology in 1986. She currently is a member of the Board of Directors of Adlyfe, BioMimetic Pharmaceuticals, Elbion (Chair), Endocyte, Neosil, Primera, Targacept, Veritas Medicine, and XDx (Observer).

Harold Gerber, M.D. has over 20 years experience in the healthcare industry and advisory experience with a broad range of companies including biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device and healthcare services companies.Prior to joining Burrill & Company, Dr. Gerber was Managing Director and Head of Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Investment Banking for Wells Fargo Securities, where his responsibilities included mergers & acquisitions, public offerings, private placements, and strategic advisory work. Prior to joining the predecessor of Wells Fargo Securities in May 2000, Dr. Gerber was Executive Director and Head of Life Sciences Investment Banking for Rabobank International in San Francisco. Previously, he headed the bank's life sciences and healthcare activities in the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy and was based in London. Dr. Gerber was a member of the Bank's Strategic Advisory Board, certified by the UK Securities and Futures Authority, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Golden Helix Healthcare Award. Dr. Gerber is currently a member of the National Board of Directors for the American Liver Foundation.Dr. Gerber received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude, and his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was awarded membership in Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Gerber did research at the National Institutes of Health. He was Chairman and CEO and Founder of a medical diagnostic company which he later sold and is now part of Quest Diagnostics. He completed an advanced certification in Internal Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

Mohan brings a broad life sciences background in a range of functions including business development, strategic planning, marketing, product development, engineering and manufacturing. Prior to joining Burrill & Company, he was Executive VP of Corporate Development at diaDexus, Inc. where he was responsible for sourcing and executing various types of transactions during a seven year period, including in-licensing, out-licensing, and a successfully executed spin-out of the therapeutics division. While at diaDexus, he played a key role in two major private financings, managed R&D operations for a transition year, and headed the marketing launch of a novel cardiovascular diagnostic product. Prior to diaDexus, Mohan was a healthcare consultant at The Wilkerson Group where he managed several strategic engagements across the pharmaceutical, biotech, diagnostics and medical device industries. Mohan began his biotech career as a biochemical process engineer at Genentech, where he spent 7 years in positions ranging from biopharmaceutical manufacturing to capital projects management. He holds a BS in Chemical Engineering (Tennessee), an MS in Biomedical Engineering (Duke), and an MBA (Yale).

Mr. Cross has twelve years of investment banking experience exclusively focused on the healthcare industry. He began his career at Alex. Brown & Sons Inc. in Baltimore, Maryland and has a broad range of transactional experience including numerous public and private financings as well as strategic advisory assignments for both large and small life sciences companies in the US and Europe. After Alex. Brown & Sons was acquired by Deutsche Bank AG in 1999, he spent the next six years in London and NYC with Deutsche Bank Securities before moving to Thomas Weisel Partners to focus on growth-oriented life sciences companies in 2005. During his twelve year career, Mr. Cross has worked on transactions for and developed relationships with the industry's leading life sciences companies including Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Baxter, Bayer, Genzyme, Novartis, Sepracor, Schering AG, Shire, Sciele (now Shionogi), Tibotec-Virco, Trimeris, United Therapeutics and Vanda, among others. Mr. Cross received an MBA with Honors from Columbia Business School and has a BS from the University of California, Los Angeles where he graduated with Dean's List distinction. Prior to business school, he was involved in cancer research at the University of Washington Medical School where his research on the role of p53 and solid tumor progression culminated with a first authorship in the journal Science.

Andrea Scheinker joined Burrill & Company's Media Group in July of 2006 as a project manager focused on Burrill's conferences and events. Prior to joining Burrill & Company, Ms. Scheinker served as an independent event planner for several medical membership associations, the Meetings and Events Manager for the American Academy of Ophthalmology in San Francisco and the Educational Program Planner for the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals in Alexandria, Virginia. She holds a BA in Linguistics from the University of Oklahoma.

Ms. Tay joined Burrill & Company in 2006 as an analyst and is involved in evaluating new venture investment opportunities within the life sciences sector. Prior to joining Burrill, Ms. Tay worked at Lehman Brothers? healthcare investment banking franchise. She also spent time at Stanford's Office of Technology Licensing, where she handled all aspects of life science technology transfer and worked with various biotech, med tech and life science tools companies. Lucy has been covering the biotechnology sector from various standpoints since late 1992 when she joined Scrip World Pharmaceutical News as a reporter. She continued to hone her writing and editorial skills, whilst expanding her knowledge of the biotech sector, with the Financial Times group, as editor of its twice-monthly newsletter, Biotechnology Business News. Lucy also contributed to various publications on a freelance basis. After three years with the FT, she moved to the Reed Elsevier publication, European Biotech News, as editor. In autumn 1998 she joined stockbroker WestLB Panmure as a biotech salesperson. In 2000, she moved to UBS Warburg in the same role, and then to Deutsche Bank in Spring 2001, where she was voted as the number one biotech salesperson in an Extel 2002 survey. Lucy holds an MA in modern languages from the University of Cambridge. A mother of two girls, Lucy lives in North Norfolk, UK.
