Dow Jones Description

Cabot Microelectronics is the leading supplier of sophisticated polishing compounds and a provider of polishing pads used in the manufacture of advanced semiconductors (chips) and rigid disks--critical components that drive today's electronics--from desktop and laptop computers, cellular phones and electronic games, to personal data assistants, telecommunication switchboards and the servers that power our expanding Internet world. Our slurry and pad products are the critical materials required for a highly accurate and critical polishing process-chemical mechanical planarization (CMP)--that flattens silicon wafers to a near-perfect smoothness. This enables multiple layers of intricate circuitry to be built upon the wafer surface and results in high-performance chips that are the brains of today's electronics infrastructure. Likewise, the CMP process used for rigid disks media results in a high-quality, mirror-like finish that enables high-density storage of data on the rigid disk-essential for today's memory-intensive computer operating systems and multi-media application software. The combination of our technological expertise and longevity in the slurry industry has earned us a reputation as one of the semiconductor industry's leading innovators in CMP-enabling technology. By providing industry-proven, superior CMP solutions, we have established the industry benchmark for slurry and pad standards, and continue to extend our market leadership position. ...
