Christopher E. Paine is a senior analyst and deputy director of the nuclear program of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), in Washington, D.C., which he joined in June 1991. Prior to joining the NRDC, Mr. Paine spent five years working with Senator Edward M. Kennedy, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on ending U.S. production of plutonium for weapons and a legislated cutoff of nuclear testing. Mr. Paine is the author or coauthor of numerous NRDC reports, as well as over seventy articles on proliferation and national security policy in publications such as Scientific American, Nature, Arms Control Today, Science, and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Mr. Paine is a past President of the Los Alamos Study Group.

Dr. R. Lindsey Bergman is Assistant Clinical Professor and Associate Director of the Child OCD, Anxiety, and Tic Disorders Program at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCLA and joined the department of Psychiatry soon after earning her degree in 1995. Dr. Bergman is a researcher and clinician who specializes in cognitive behavioral treatment for children and adolescents with anxiety and related disorders and her work seeks to further understand, develop, and test CBT and other evidence-based interventions available to anxious children. She has received several research grants from the National Institutes of Health to study the treatment of childhood anxiety and has written extensively on this topic.

Conan Nolan is a general assignment reporter for NBC4's "Channel 4 News" and co-host of "News Conference," the station's Sunday morning Public Affairs program. Since joining the station in 1986, Mr. Nolan has covered numerous important stories and currently covers local and state politics, including the 2006 Campaign for California Governor. In addition, his various foreign assignments have included reporting from Kuwait and Iraq while covering "Operation Iraqi Freedom" for both NBC4 and the NBC network. Mr. Nolan has won several awards for his work, including an Emmy for his reports from the Pakistani frontier on the U.S. led campaign to defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan, and a Golden Mike Award for a special report he did on the tiny South Pacific Island of Tuvalu which claims to be sinking due to global warming. From Columbine to the "Unabomber" to driving in front of O.J. Simpson during LA's most famous freeway chase, Conan Nolan has had a front row seat for some of the most important stories of the past 20 years.
Dr. David Altheide is Regent's Professor at Arizona State University where he has been on the faculty since 1974. Both his teaching at the School of Justice and Social Inquiry and his research have focused on mass communication, social interaction and social organization. He is a leading expert in a qualitative research methodology known as "ethnographic content analysis," which he uses to analyze the language of news reports, particularly focusing in recent years on the increasing prevalence of the language of fear in the media and in everyday use. Dr. Altheide has written numerous scholarly articles and is the author of several books, including Creating Fear: News and the Construction of Crisis (2002) which received the Charles Horton Cooley Award from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction, and Terrorism and the Politics of Fear (2006) which was selected by the American Library Association as one of its "Outstanding Academic Titles for 2006." Terrorism and the Politics of Fear also received the Charles Horton Cooley Award from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. In 2005, Dr. Altheide was the recipient of the George Herbert Mead Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction and in 2007 was honored with The Mentor Excellence Award from the same academic society.

Dr. Heath is a renowned nanotechnology expert. As a graduate student at Rice University, he was the principal student involved in the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of C60 (a.k.a. Buckminsterfullerene) and the fullerene family. His work focuses on the physics and chemistry of nanoscale structures, with an eye towards both biological and electronic applications. He is the Director of the Nanosystems Biology Cancer Center at Caltech, which focuses on the development of nanotechnologies that could aid with the early detection and treatment of cancer. In 2001, his work on molecular circuitry was highlighted in the journal Science as the 'Breakthrough of the Year', and he was also named as a Scientific American Top 50 Scientist in 2002. He has served as the Director of the California Nanosystems Institute, and is a co-founder of Nanosys, Inc., an industry-leading nanotechnology company. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and has been a recipient of the Spiers Medal from the Royal Society, the Arthur K. Doolittle Award, a Public Service Commendation from Governor Gray Davis, the Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences, the Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology, and the Jules Springer Prize for Applied Physics.

Dr. Roughgarden is a renowned biologist who specializes in theoretical ecology and evolution. A dedicated conservationist, she has served on the Nonprofit Organization Board for the Oceanic Society (San Francisco), the EPA Science Advisory Board Committee on Valuating the Protection of Ecological Systems and Services, and the Science Advisory Boards of the Pacific Ocean Conservation Network (California) and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (Santa Barbara), among other committees and councils. She has published over one hundred research journal articles and several ecology textbooks. In addition, Dr. Roughgarden is the author of popular science books including Evolution's Rainbow, for which she won the 2005 Stonewall Prize for nonfiction from the American Library Association, and the recently released Evolution and Christian Faith: Reflections of an Evolutionary Biologist (Island Press).

Dr. Michael Fanselow is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA where he has taught since 1987. His research has focused on the nature and function of fear and most particularly on the questions of how fear is learned and how fear memories are stored in the brain. He was elected president of the American Psychological Association's Division of Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology in 1998 and is a past president of the Pavlovian Society. He has been honored with the Edwin B Newman Award for Excellence in Research for his dissertation work in 1979, the Early Career Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association in 1985, and the Troland Award from the National Academy of Science in 1995 for his analysis of basic mechanisms of fear.

Alan J. Fohrer is chairman and chief executive officer of Southern California Edison (SCE), one of the country's largest electric utilities. Fohrer was elected CEO on January 1, 2002 and was elected chairman on June 12, 2007. Fohrer has extensive knowledge and management experience in every aspect of SCE's business. Previously, Fohrer was president and chief executive officer of Edison Mission Energy (EME), a subsidiary of Edison International that owns and operates independent power production facilities, having been elected to that position in January, 2000. Before his leadership at EME, Fohrer was executive vice president and chief financial officer of parent company Edison International and SCE. Fohrer began his Edison career in 1973 in SCE's Civil Engineering Department. In 1980, he moved to the Treasurer's Department, where he held a number of positions, including financial planning supervisor, financial planning and banking manager, corporate planning and budgeting manager, and assistant treasurer. He was elected vice president, treasurer, and chief financial officer of SCE in 1991, and was promoted to senior vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer of both SCE and Edison International in 1993. Fohrer is a member of the Engineering School Board of Councilors of the University of Southern California, and the Dean's Advisory Council for the School of Business at California State University-Los Angeles. He also serves as a member of the board of directors for the Los Angeles Sports Council; Montgomery Watson Harza, Inc.; San Gabriel Valley Council Boy Scouts of America; California Science Center; California Chamber of Commerce; and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO). Fohrer earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Southern California, and an M.B.A. from California State University-Los Angeles.

As senior vice president of gas operations, Stewart is responsible for the engineering of all gas systems and the operation of the transmission, storage and distribution facilities at SDG&E and SoCalGas. Stewart served as senior vice president of transmission and storage facilities at SDG&E and SoCalGas from December 2001 to September 2005, president of SoCalGas' energy transportation services division (ETS) from July 1998 to December 2001, and senior vice president of ETS from January 1995 to July 1998. He was SoCalGas' vice president of engineering and operations support from 1993 to 1994, and its vice president of transmission and storage operations from 1990 to 1993. Stewart joined SoCalGas in 1967 and has served in a variety of positions in distribution, transmission, gas supply and engineering. Stewart is chairman of Pipeline Research International Council (PRCI), a member of the board of directors of the Gas Technology Institute, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the North American Energy Standards Board (formerly Gas Industry Standards Board), the California Hospital Medical Center, and the United Way. He is a member of the Fair Judicial Election Practices Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Since 2005, Mr. Lorsch has served as the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MMR. He is also Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The RHL Group, Inc., a private equity and business management consulting firm Mr. Lorsch formed in April 1998. In 1994, he co-founded SmarTalk TeleServices, Inc., leading the company through a successful public offering in 1996 and building it into one of the largest providers of prepaid telecommunications products and services, serving as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until February 1998, following which SmarTalk moved its headquarters from Los Angeles to Dublin, Ohio with different management following its acquisition of ConQuest Telecommunication Services Corp. The combined company's assets subsequently were liquidated and sold to AT&T in March 1999. In 1986, Mr. Lorsch founded the Lorsch Creative Network, a consulting company that developed marketing, advertising and interactive sales promotions campaigns for nationally and internationally recognized clients. Mr. Lorsch also served on the Personal Health Record Steering Committee of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society from 2006 to 2007. Mr. Lorsch is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the California Science Center; Member of the Board of Governors, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; Member of the Board and of the Executive Committee of D.A.R.E. America; and Member of the Board of the Sheriff's Youth Foundation, and has received numerous honors and awards, including D.A.R.E. America's "Future of America Award"; the Muscular Dystrophy Association's "Humanitarian of the Year Award"; and the Starlight Children's Foundation's "Golden Wish Award." Mr. Lorsch was also awarded the Private Sector Initiatives Citation, or C-Flag, from the White House during the Reagan Administration for his commitment to raising millions of dollars for financing state and local earthquake preparedness education.
