Celera Genomics Group

Samuel Broder, M.D., joined Celera in 1998 and presently serves as Chief Medical Officer. He is a physician-scientist with special expertise in the relationship between disorders of the immune system and cancer. Dr. Broder began his research career in the Metabolism Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 1972. Following the onset of the AIDS epidemic, Dr. Broder’s laboratory added studies of anti-retroviral agents to its research repertoire and made significant contributions to the development of AIDS drugs such as AZT ddl and ddC. In 1989, President Ronald Reagan named Dr. Broder Director of the NCI. Under his leadership, the NCI initiated a number of important large-scale human trials in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. In the spring of 1995, Dr. Broder became Senior Vice President for Research and Development at the IVAX Corporation in Florida, where he directed a broad range of pharmaceutical research on new drugs for heart disease, diabetes and diseases of the lung. Dr. Broder received his bachelor’s and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, is the author of more than 300 scholarly papers, and holds numerous patents.

Stacey is the Chief Business Officer of Celera. She holds a B.S. from Simmons College and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California at Davis. Stacey is also a registered Patent Agent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to joining Celera Diagnostics, she was the Vice President of Licensing at Roche Molecular Systems and held various positions within the Hoffmann La-Roche law department supporting their molecular diagnostic activities. Her experience includes activities as a patent agent at Cetus Corporation and as a molecular biologist at Codon and Genentech.

Tom White is the Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of Research for Celera. He received his B.A. in Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. His postdoctoral research was carried out at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco and at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. From 1978 to 1989, Tom held various positions at Cetus Corporation including Vice President of Research and Associate Director of Research and Development . From 1989-2000 he worked for Roche Molecular Systems as Sr. Vice President of Research and Development.

Mike Zoccoli is the General Manager of the Products Business. He earned a B.A. in Chemistry at the University of Connecticut and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Dartmouth College. After post-doctoral studies at Harvard Medical School supported by fellowships from the National Institutes of Health and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, he started his career in the diagnostics industry at Syva Company in 1982. He has worked throughout his career in product development and project management at a number of companies including Cetus, Roche Molecular Systems, Applied Imaging Corporation, and Bayer Diagnostics.
