Founded in 1967, Ceradyne Thermo Materials produces fused silica ceramic products in its 85,000 sq. ft. (7,900 m2) Georgia facility. Thermo Materials specializes in the manufacture of fused silica ceramic components for industrial markets. Its industrial products serve a wide market where high temperature and thermal shock resistance, as well as low thermal expansion, are required. Thermo Materials has the capability of producing large shapes (often over 100 lbs.) to precision tolerances. Ceradyne Thermo Materials also produces missile radomes for the Patriot, Aegis and Arrow missile systems from its fused silica ceramic. Thermo Material also performs the final grinding for the Pac-3 silicon nitride based radomes. Ceradyne Thermo Materials is an ISO 9002 certified company.

David P. Reed joined Ceradyne in November 1983, and has served as a Vice President since January 1988. In March 2005, Mr. Reed was appointed to the newly created position of President of North American Operations, with responsibility for all the Company's Advanced Ceramic Operations in Costa Mesa, Irvine and San Diego, California, as well as the new plant in Lexington, Kentucky; Ceradyne Thermo Materials, in Scottdale, Georgia; and Ceradyne Semicon Associates, in Lexington, Kentucky. Mr. Reed's focus has been and will continue to be on lightweight ceramic armor systems. Mr. Reed remains General Manager of Advanced Ceramic Operations, Costa Mesa and Irvine, California, responsible for the operations, finances and marketing of the facilities. Prior to joining Ceradyne, Mr. Reed served as Manager, Process Engineering for the Industrial Ceramic Division of Norton Co. from 1980 to 1983. Mr. Reed obtained a B.S. in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University in 1976 and an M.S. in Ceramic Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1978.
