Rene has been with Certicom since 2001. His main responsibilities include research on cryptography, generation of intellectual property, design and analysis of efficient security architectures, consultancy, and active participation in standards development, including participation in the ZigBee Alliance. Rene held a CNRS-postdoc position in combinatorics at the University of Bordeaux, France (1995) and was a visiting assistant professor at Michigan Technological University, MI, USA, and at the Discrete Mathematics Group of Eindhoven (both in 1996). In 1997-2000, he worked at TNO Research Laboratories and at Philips Crypto, The Netherlands, where he was engaged in security evaluations and the cryptanalysis of proprietary crypto systems, responsible in the design and analysis of cryptographic building blocks and the design of security architectures. Rene's interests include theoretical and applied aspects of coding theory, combinatorics, cryptography, discrete mathematics, and information theory. He particularly enjoys the rich cross-fertilization between these disciplines and the vast array of real-life applications that have their roots herein. He is also interested in general trust management and security architectural designs issues. He designed a distributed security architecture of unsurpassed flexibility, which could eventually become a blueprint for low-cost, scalable and versatile security architectures for ad-hoc networks. Rene holds a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science and a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. His Ph.D. thesis concerned combinatorial non-existence results and efficient constructions for covering codes, which can be viewed as quantizers of digital data - approximation schemes that allow a shorter representation of data, at the expense of a limited loss of accuracy.
