Many of you already know the story of my son JR (short for James Robert) and his battle with Brain Cancer. For those who don't or for those who just like a good story with a happy ending, please read on. JR was a relatively normal with a few quirks like most kids. He played soccer on a traveling team, was really smart (although Bs were his favorite grade), teased his sisters Pretty normal stuff. He had had trouble with reflux as a baby and was under weight, but nothing too concerning. Like all of us he wore glasses and in the late fall of 1998, he went in for a normal eye exam. The optometrist noticed something called Nystigmus, an involuntary shaking of the eyes, when he examined JR and told us we might want to see a specialist. A couple weeks later we did and were told it probably was nothing, but that an MRI would be a good idea. No one seemed overly concerned and 2 weeks later, Marge and JR went in for a simple MRI just to be sure. I was working in Boston at the time and received a call from JR on December 16th, "Dad, I just got my MRI and they said I have a brain tumor and need to go the hospital right away." The MRI had shown a golf ball sized mass on JR's brain stem. He and Marge went directly to Children's where the staff was waiting to check him in and schedule him for immediate surgery. The tumor looked ready to block fluid flow around the brain which would have literally killed him. A couple of emergency surgeries pushed JR's back to the next evening. During the day of the surgery, we saw what seemed like a 100 MDs nurses, counselors, religious, etc. Because JR had never really had symptoms and due to the location, the prognosis was not good. Most everyone thought this was an aggressive fast growth tumor and it was completely intertwined with the nerves of the brain stem. In 24 hours, we had gone from the idyllic family to being told to prepare for the loss of our son. It was by far the worst day of our lives. That night JR had 6 hours of surgery. Dr. Tomita emerged around 11:00 pm to tell us that everything went well, he was able to remove 70% of the tumor and it appeared to a Grade1, slow growth tumor. The news was overwhelming considering what our expectations had been a few hours before. JR spent the next 6 nights at Children's slowly coming out of the induced coma, beginning to breath on his own, move his fingers and toes and finally talk and eat. On Christmas Eve 1998, we came home with JR to a street lined with luminaries and get well banners. Children's had delivered the greatest Christmas present anyone could ask for. Over the next 2 years, JR went to Children's almost every Friday for a day of tests and Chemotherapy. The Chemo helped kill and shrink the remaining tumor. Dr. Stu Goldman and his staff in the Oncology ward were truly unbelievable. This a ward where 20 to 30 kids a day come in to be pumped full of toxic chemicals. You'll find kids and parents from every economic, social and racial background, all getting exactly the same care from people that can not be described. How they manage to keep the smiles on their faces and show the patience they do is way beyond me. We met lots of families like ours during those 2 years. Some finished their treatments, got their drug ports removed and we would see them only for fund raisers or maybe if they had a check up. Some kids were there one week and not the next and we never saw them again. The successes outweigh the losses at Children's, but there is a ton of work left to do. There are no magic cures for these kids. The advances in Chemo and Radiation treatments have been incremental and steady. Each year, new tools are added the doctors' bag to help save kids like JR. The statistics are incredible. 10 years ago the survival rate for kids with brain tumors was something like 40%. Today it's more like 70%. Thanks again for helping Children's continue to help these kids.
