Robert H. Osher, M.D. served as Medical Director of Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI) for 20 years. He is a Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and his practice is limited to cataract and implant surgery. He has been listed in the Best Doctors in America since the first edition published in 1992 and was listed in the Top Ten Cataract Surgeons in the United States in a survey conducted by Ophthalmology Times. Dr. Osher is a graduate of University of Rochester Medical School and served his Residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. He completed three Fellowships in Miami and at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia prior to receiving Board Certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been elected into the honor societies of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha and has also received the Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship Award, Maumenee Award, Rayner Award from England, Canon Award from Japan, the Senior Academy Honor Award, the Binkhorst Medal, the Gold Medal Award from Australia and the Lim Award from China. Dr. Osher has achieved worldwide recognition as a leader in cataract surgery. He has designed many of the contemporary intraocular lenses and instruments used in cataract surgery, in addition to developing new techniques in this subspecialty. Dr. Osher's surgical videos have won first-prize honors at the American, European, Asian and South American Cataract Societies and he has been awarded the coveted Grand Prize in both the ASCRS and ESCRS International competitions. His lectures have been presented in more than 35 countries including Japan, Britain, France, Sweden, Canada, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, England, Chile, Portugal, Peru, Germany, Holland, Austria, Korea, Denmark, Costa Rica, Italy, Greece, Taiwan, China, Turkey, Belgium, Singapore, Ireland and Uruguay. Dr. Osher has co-authored five books and numerous manuscripts on cataract and implant surgery. He serves as Editor of the Video Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Video Textbook of Viscosurgery, and International Advances in Phacoemulsification, which are viewed by cataract surgeons on six continents. He is a Reviewer for the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, the Archives of Ophthalmology, and is on the Editorial Board of five additional publications. He has served on the executive committee of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society and has been the international editor of the Brazilian Journal, FOCO. Besides his interest in cataract surgery, Dr. Osher had been a proud coach of more than 50 CEI youth baseball and basketball teams reaching the National Championship in each sport. He has also been the ophthalmic consultant for the Cincinnati Reds since 1990.

Dr. Robert J. Cionni is the Medical Director of the Cincinnati Eye Institute where he has practiced since 1989. He specializes in cataract and lens implant surgery, performing nearly 2000 surgeries each year and has established himself as a leader in his specialty by pioneering some of the most advanced cataract and implant techniques. He is also actively involved in clinical research bringing the latest technologies to his patients; sometimes, well before these technologies are available to other surgeons. He has authored numerous articles and textbook chapters about specialized cataract techniques, technologies and the management of complications. Dr. Cionni has designed special implants and surgical techniques to improve the surgical outcomes in patients with traumatic cataract and congenital lens subluxation, as found in many patients with Marfan Syndrome. In addition, he teaches surgeons nationally and internationally about the use of these devices. Patients with these types of problems are referred to him from all over the world. Most recently, Dr Cionni has become an authority in the use of implants that may eliminate or minimize the use of glasses after cataract surgery. He lectures across the country concerning the use of implants such as the ReSTOR, the ReZoom and the AcrySof Toric astigmatism correcting implant.

Dr. Zalta received his Medical Degree from University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1978 after graduating Cum Laude from Rice University in 1975. He served his Internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and completed his Ophthalmology Residency training at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1983. Dr. Zalta subsequently received glaucoma Fellowship training at Ochsner Clinic and Louisiana State University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been Board Certified since 1984 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Robbins is the Chairman of Ophthalmology at Good Samaritan Hospital and he is also a Volunteer Assistant Professor in Family Medicine at University of Cincinnati. In 1993, Dr. Robbins served as President of the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati and as President of the Medical/Dental Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital (1996-1998). Dr. Robbins has been awarded the Community Preceptor of the Year by the Department of Family Medicine at University of Cincinnati. Anup K. Khatana, M.D. joined Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI) as a glaucoma specialist in 2000. Before joining CEI, he spent four years in Kansas City, dividing his time between private practice and academics, serving as Director of the Glaucoma Service and Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. In 1999, he was honored as Teacher of the Year. Dr. Khatana grew up in Detroit, completed his undergraduate, medical school and Ophthalmology Residency training at Wayne State University, Kresge Eye Institute Department of Ophthalmology. He served as Chief Resident during his last year at Kresge Eye Institute, and then completed a Glaucoma Fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia before receiving Board Certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Brian K. Kuhlman, O.D. joined the Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI) to provide Optometric services and to assist in the glaucoma clinic. He received his Doctoral Degree from the Ohio State University, where he also worked on his undergraduate education. During his training, Dr. Kuhlman completed his Externship at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. Upon graduation, he completed a 13 month post-Doctoral Residency at CEI, focusing on the management of ocular disease. Dr. Kuhlman is certified by the International Board of Optometric Examiners in the treatment and management of ocular disease. He has served as a Professor of Clinical Optometry at the Ohio State University College of Optometry and is a member of the American Optometric Association and Cincinnati Optometric Association. Dr. Kuhlman was awarded the top educational poster at the 2003 East/West Eye Conference. He is active in the community, having given various presentations on the importance of eye health to local elementary schools and volunteered his time performing vision exams for Prevent Blindness Ohio and the Gift of Sight programs. Dr. Kuhlman is also involved with vision screenings for the University of Cincinnati student athletes. When not at CEI, Dr. Kuhlman sees patients at a private office. Dr. Kuhlman lives in Milford with his wife Kelly.

Dr. Riemann is a member of the Vitreous Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Ohio State Medical Association, Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, Cincinnati Ophthalmology Society, and the American Medical Association. His original research in the fields of Ophthalmology, Cardiology, and Endocrinology has been published in international peer reviewed scientific journals and has been presented at national scientific meetings. Dr. Riemann specializes in medical and surgical vitreoretinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, retinopathy of prematurity, vascular diseases of the retina, uveitis, histoplasmosis, complications of anterior segment surgery, and ocular trauma.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Daniel M. Miller M.D., Ph.D. received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan where he graduated with highest honors. He completed a combined M.D./Ph.D. curriculum at the Ohio State University College of Medicine where he combined doctoral research with his medical education. Dr. Miller graduated with recognition for academic excellence and national awards for his research contributions. He completed an Internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. This was followed by an Ophthalmology Residency and subspecialty training in vitreoretinal disease and surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, where he served as Chief Resident. Upon completion of his retina fellowship, he accepted a faculty position at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Miller has an extensive background in basic and clinical research. While at Ohio State, he received a fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His research on blood vessels and the immune system led to numerous publications in international scientific journals and textbooks. Throughout the course of his Ophthalmology career, Dr. Miller has continued research in macular degeneration, diabetes, and vitreoretinal surgery and has presented this work in international clinical and scientific meetings.

Ekaterini C. Karatza, M.D., practices Comprehensive and Emergency Ophthalmology at the Cincinnati Eye Institute Urgent Care Clinic. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, that earned her an academic performance award from Glaxo Pharmaceutical for postgraduate studies in the United States. Upon completion of her research fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, MA, and a one year internship program at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA, Dr. Karatza continued her residency training in Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA and Louisiana State University, Shreveport, LA. Following three years of specialized fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Karatza obtained her Masters Degree in Public Administration (MPA/MC) from Harvard University at the Kennedy School of Government and subsequently joined Cincinnati Eye Institute in 2005. Dr. Karatza has published numerous articles and co-authored in ophthalmic textbook chapters. She continues to present her work at both national and international meetings. Dr. Karatza is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Gary A. Varley, M.D. specializes in Laser Vision Correction and serves as the Medical Director for the Cincinnati Eye Institute's Laser Centers in Cincinnati and Dayton. Jeffrey M. Zink, M.D. is a member of the Glaucoma Service at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. He is an Ohio native and a summa cum laude graduate of Bates College. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and received the Charles A. Oliver Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology. After finishing an internship in Internal Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital, he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Kellogg Eye Center of the University of Michigan. During his residency, he was awarded two George Slocum Research Awards and served as Chief Resident in his final year. Subsequently, he did a fellowship in medical and surgical glaucoma at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, which is associated with the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Zink has published a number of peer-reviewed articles in ophthalmic literature and has presented his studies at national meetings. His article in the British Journal of Ophthal-mology on optic nerve blood flow was highlighted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology in the weekly newsletter Academy Express. He has a strong interest in all medical and surgical aspects of glaucoma, particularly glaucoma drainage implant surgery, filtering procedures and laser surgery. Dr. Zink also performs cataract and intraocular lens implant surgery, which is often combined with glaucoma procedures. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Jessica D. Hildenbrand, O.D.joined Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI) to provide Optometric services and to assist in the glaucoma and uveitis clinics. Her undergraduate education was at University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She attended the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois where she received her Doctoral Degree and was named among the Top Five Graduating Seniors. She received an assortment of honors, including two academic awards, in addition to induction into the Beta Sigma Kappa and Tomb & Key Academic Societies. Dr. Hildenbrand completed her Externship at Olympia Fields Osteopathic Hospital in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Dr. Hildenbrand is currently a Volunteer Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at University of Cincinnati. She is the Director of the Contact Lens Service at the Medical Arts facility and Instructor for the Ophthalmology Residents on this topic. She is also involved with providing continuing medical education credits for Optometrists attending Grand Round lectures at the University. Dr. Hildenbrand is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Ohio Optometric Association, and the Cincinnati Optometric Association. Following the woman who would become his wife to Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Sands returned to college at Creighton University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. He obtained his Medical Degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, graduating Cum Laude. After completing his Opthalmology residency at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Sands started a practice in comprehensive Opthalmology with a special interest in cataract surgery at the University. He has been Chief of the Opthalmology Section at Cincinnati Veterans Hospital since 1986 and Director of the Residency Program at University of Cincinnati Department of Opthalmology from 1990-1999. He has been Director of the Cataract Surgery Service at the University of Cincinnati since 1990. Dr. Sands was appointed Associate Professor of Clinical Opthalmology in 1995. That same year, Dr. Sands and a medical student established the University of Cincinnati Medical/Surgical Eye Missions Organization. Dr.Sands has organized and performed many eye missions since 1995. Dr. Sands' honors include membership in the AOA Medical Honor Society, U.C. Department of Opthalmology Teacher of the Year 1991 and 1996, and Opthalmology Top Docs in Cincinnati Magazine 1998, 2000 and 2003. Dr. Lyons received his undergraduate education at Ohio University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1997 in biology with a minor in art. He went on to study Optometry at Ohio State University College of Optometry,receiving his Doctoral Degree four years later. As part of his Optometric training, he completed two rotations emphasizing ocular disease. The first at Carolina Eye Associates in Southern Pines, North Carolina, and the second at Hampton Veteran's Administration in Hampton, Virginia. Nathan Bjork, O.D. received his undergraduate degree in Vision Science from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from Michigan College of Optometry, also in Big Rapids, Michigan in 2000. He then elected to complete a thirteen-month Residency at Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI). During this Residency, he gained additional experience treating and managing various ocular diseases. Dr. Kerstine serves as a comprehensive Ophthalmologist with the retinal service at Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI). He devotes particular attention to patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. In addition, Dr. Kerstine treats retinal tears, blood vessel obstructions and other diseases, which may require laser photocoagulation to the eye. Dr. Kerstine is a Clinical Volunteer Professor at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He has served as the past Director of Ophthalmology at the Bethesda Hospitals and has been Chairman of the Operating Room Committee at Bethesda Hospital. Dr. Kerstine has been active in a variety of community services including the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and several local and national fund raising organizations. Inclusive of his community service, he also served many years on Amberley Village Council and was mayor for four years. At home he enjoys spending time with his wife Mona and visiting with their three grown children. His hobbies include traveling and golf.

Robert E. Foster, M.D. is a member of the vitreoretinal service at Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI). His undergraduate education was at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan where he received a degree in Biology, graduated from the Honors College, and was named among the Top 25 Graduating Seniors. He went to medical school at University of Michigan Medical School, graduating in 1988. His Internship was at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was selected as the Intern of the Year. He completed an Ophthalmology Residency at the Cleveland Clinic serving as Chief Resident in his final year. Additional subspecialty training in medical and surgical disease of the retina was undertaken at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute associated with University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Foster then joined the professional staff of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he developed a busy referral practice between 1993-1997. While at the Cleveland Clinic, he was involved in the teaching and education of Ophthalmology Residents and Fellows. He co-authored more than 30 peer review publications and was involved in clinical and basic research in diseases of the retina, macula, and vitreous. Additionally, he has had the opportunity to lecture across the country and internationally. Dr. Foster joined CEI in January of 1997 and sees patients at the main office in Blue Ash, as well as Middletown, Ohio. He has a strong interest sand expertise in all medical and surgical diseases that affect the retina, macula, and vitreous, particularly diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment and vascular diseases of the retina. Dr. Foster is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also belongs to the Retina Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists (formerly the Vitreous Society), the Society of Heed Fellows, the Cincinnati Society of Ophthalmology and the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati. He has been selected among the Best Doctors in America and recently received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award.
Dr. Hutchins has organized and led numerous retinal courses developed to train Ophthalmologists. He has published a number of scientific papers, given scientific presentations at national ophthalmic meetings, and has been a co-investigator in national research projects, some of which have been sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH). Dr. Hutchins is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He received the Resident Training and Patient Care Award at University of Cincinnati, and is listed in the Best Doctors in America. Dr. Hutchins is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, Cincinnati Society of Ophthalmology of which he was President in 1995, Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, and the Ohio State Medical Association.

Dr. Krug is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, FACS. He is a member of the prestigious Macula Society, an international organization of leading retinal specialists devoted to the study and cure of macular disorders. Dr. Krug is currently Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine where he is actively engaged in the education of Resident Ophthalmologists, post graduate education, tertiary retinal patient care, and clinical research. Stuart H. Anness, M.D. was born and raised in Cincinnati. He attended Western Hills High School and then received his undergraduate degree at Kenyon College. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. His medical training was completed at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dr. Anness spent a one-year Internship at the Kettering Medical Center and then completed his Ophthalmology training at Evanston Hospital, an affiliate of Northwestern University Medical Center. Dr. Anness practices general Ophthalmology in the Western Hills area. He specializes in laser surgery and cataract and implant surgery. Dr. Anness currently has appointments to the Medical Staff of the Franciscan, Christ, University, Children's and Bethesda Hospitals. He is a member of the Cincinnati Medical Society, Ohio State Medical Society, American Medical Association, Ohio Ophthalmology Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Anness resides in Green Township with his wife and two sons. Dr. Anness is a member of the Twin Tower Board of Trustees. His interests include scuba diving, golf, travel, history and aviation.

James J. Augsburger, M.D. is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Chief of Ocular Oncology Service, University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye tumors, including uveal and conjunctival melanomas, retino-blastomas, metastatic carcinomas to the eye, ocular lymphomas, hemangiomas of the retina and choriod, and other benign and malignant tumors in or on the eye. Dr. Augsburger completed his undergraduate studies at Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio. After receiving his Doctor of Medicine at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, he completed his Internship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Augsburger then completed his Residency at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, followed by a Fellowship in retina and ocular oncology at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Augsburger is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also belongs to the American Ophthalmological Society, ARVO (Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology), AUPO (Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology), Club Jules Gonin (European Retina Society), and the Macula Society and Retina Society.
