Clinical Laboratory

Dr. Lehman is the assistant medical director of the University Hospitals and Clinics Clinical Laboratory, Phlebotomy and Support Services, and Transfusion Services, and an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Lehman received his MD from the University of Utah and is board certified in clinical pathology, blood banking, and transfusion medicine by the American Board of Pathology. In addition to other memberships, Dr. Lehman is a member of the American Association of Blood Banks.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Smith grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. A graduate of the University of Iowa School of Medicine, he completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He holds fellowship training in surgical pathology at Washington University Medical Center/Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He has additional fellowship training in dermatopathology from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Smith joined Carolinas Pathology Group and Pathology Associates Services, now Celligent Diagnostics, in 1999. He serves as Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratory at Carolinas Medical Center- Pineville. In addition to directing the services of the Clinical Lab, Dr. Smith is a faculty presenter in the lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node biopsy courses offered through the Carolinas Laparoscopic and Advanced Surgery Program. He has also been instrumental in the development of the services available through Carolinas Pathology Group and collaborates with Dr. Mack Sexton to provide comprehensive expertise and services in the area of dermatopathology.

With more than 25 years of experience in sales and business development, Mr. Paulsen joined IBT as Senior Director of Sales for the Clinical Laboratory. His responsibilities include developing sales and revenue strategies and leading market expansion efforts. Prior to joining IBT, Mr. Paulsen was the Regional Manager of Business Development for Laboratory Corporation of America in Kansas City, MO where he led a team of 18 covering a seven state territory. Preceding his tenure with LabCorp, Mr. Paulsen held several sales management positions with a variety of companies including BioView and Inspex, Inc. At BioView he directed the sales of Automated FISH scanning and analysis systems to hospitals. During his time at Inspex he managed the sales of $1.5M Wafer Inspection and Data Management systems to semiconductor manufacturers. Mr. Paulsen began his career as a Registered Nurse at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska as the Clinical Supervisor of the ICU department. In 2000, he graduated from Cardinal Stritch University with a B.S. in Administration. Mr. Paulsen then furthered his sales education with numerous seminars and training curriculums.

The field of Pathology was a clear choice for my specialty because Pathologists have to know a little about everything and that is what I love about it. I believe in working hard and being accurate with every case I interpret. Each slide represents a patient and the diagnosis I make can have an enormous impact on their future. The correct diagnosis helps other physicians make good clinical decisions for their patients. The field of pathology is very broad and we are so lucky here at the Clinical Laboratory of the Black Hills to have pathologists with expertise in the major subspecialty areas in our field. Working, as a team is better than working alone, especially on difficult and unique cases to get the diagnosis correct.
