Club Libby Lu is the brainchild of veteran retailer Mary Drolet. A former Montgomery Ward & Co. and Claire's Stores, Inc. executive, she recognized the lack of retail competition and the growing numbers in the tween market. Census figures for 2003 report that the tween girl market has grown to nearly 18 million girls ages 5 to 13. As the mother of a "tweenage" daughter, Drolet saw first-hand the opportunity that existed to create a special place "just for girls." Drolet and two partners formed the specialty retail concept as a unique shopping and play experience. Drolet named the store after her imaginary childhood playmate and opened the first location in August 2000 at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Ill. Saks, Incorporated, acquired the company's 11 stores in 2003 and retained Drolet as CEO. The Club exudes fun, whether girls are shopping, hanging out with friends or having a party. The design of all aspects of the Club, including the logo, colors and fixture height, appeal to the tween customer. Club Libby Lu operates 87 mall-based locations nationwide as of 2006. A flagship resort store opened in 2004 in the Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort. Future plans include growing the chain by 15 percent annually over the next five years.
