Dow Jones Description
Yes, Comedy Central gives me money every other week. And sure, if you're a fan you've probably seen all the episodes already. BUT! Many folks don't know about the special features, the best being a wonderful forty-five minute conversation amongst Sho, Wain & Black, sitting down on their couch and just talking about how post-State Stella came to be. It's tangential and ridiculous of course, but it's also really informative and interesting, from how they started doing their monthly downtown variety show, to how David became the major force behind getting their now famous "Stella Shorts" produced.

Aasif Mandvi began performing at the age of seven as a pixie in a school play wearing tights and a bonnet. He knew from that moment on that discreet but comfortable leggings coupled with a desperate need for attention was the secret of success. Unaware of this at the time, but this type of beginning was perfect for a job as a correspondent on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" where the official uniform ironically happens to be "tights and a bonnet" ( worn discreetly under one's suit, of course). Aasif made his first appearance as contributor on August 9, 2006. He is the recipient of the OBIE award for his critically-acclaimed one-man show "Sakina's Restaurant" and his other New York stage credits include the 2002 Broadway revival of "OKLAHOMA!," "Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom," "Homebody/Kabul," "Suburbia," "Trudy Blue" and "Speak Truth to Power." Film and television credits include the title role in Merchant/Ivory's "The Mystic Masseur," "Music and Lyrics," "Spider-Man 2," "Freedomland," "The Siege," "Analyze This," "ABCD," "American Chai," "The War Within" "Sorry Haters," "Sex and the City," "Sleeper Cell," "The Sopranos," "The Bedford Diaries," "Oz," "CSI," "Law and Order," "Jericho," "ER," Ed and Tanner on "Tanner" directed by Robert Altman. Aasif's journalistic integrity has never been questioned.. and for that he is eternally grateful.

Beth won widespread notoriety during her stint as the female correspondent for the first four years on "The Daily Show" and for her annual Barbara Walters parody "The Beth Littleford Interview Special." During this time, Beth also played the sex-crazed Deirdre for two seasons on ABC's "Spin City" (the show responsible for her move away from "The Daily Show" and out to LA.) Since then, Beth has done several pilots; has guest-starred on many shows including "Without A Trace," "Frasier," "Joey," "The West Wing," "Boston Public" and "Still Standing;" and has had recurring roles on "One on One" and "Life with Bonnie." She has also lent her voice to several episodes of "The Family Guy." In 2004, Beth starred in the Fox sitcom, "Method and Red". In its review of the show, Entertainment Weekly said "The Daily Show's whip-smart Beth Littleford is squirmingly good." EW later cited "sharp supporting players like Daily Show alum Beth Littleford" as a reason for including "Method and Red" on 'The Must List.'

Unger began his career in broadcasting at WOUB in Athens, Ohio. He then turned his back on Ohio and public radio to fetch David Letterman's lunch. That's what interns considered dignified work at NBC. It was all downhill from there: Unger was tapped to produce the series Obstetrics & Gynecology Update for Lifetime Medical Television. After 26 episodes, Unger left the show and struck out on his own to produce documentary profiles on U.S. war veterans dating back to World War I. Freelance life, a departure from c-sections and pre-term births, was gratifying but impoverished. Looking for a new challenge, and to keep the heat on in his New York City apartment, Unger accepted a field producer job from TV pioneer Maury Povich. After two years, Unger begged Povich for an introduction to his wife Connie Chung who bought Unger a decent pair of shoes, and hired him as an associate producer on her CBS News magazine show Eye to Eye. Unger eventually became a producer on the show, staying with CBS News for three years before leaving to be an on-air correspondent for CBS's magazine show Day & Date. The show was eventually cancelled. Unger was unemployed, again. And Murrow wept. Now turning his back on news, Unger devoted the next four years of his life to making fun of it as part of the team that launched the award-winning The Daily Show on Comedy Central. As a correspondent and producer on the series, he helped to pioneer the series' satirical news reports on politics, people, and events around the country. Exhausted, tired of living in motel rooms and without friends, Unger left The Daily Show and began a journey down a different exhausting, friendless path in TV. He hosted NBC's Later, E! Entertainment's Talk Soup, and the network's anthology series Hollywood Offramp. He co-created and starred in pilots for Fox and Comedy Central. He produced shows for MTV and Oxygen, including their acclaimed comedy series, O2Be Anyone But Me. As an actor, Unger hosted the entertainment newsmagazine Extra until he was fired for not caring enough about celebrity. He also guest starred in NBC's Just Shoot Me and Three Sisters, and ABC's I'm with Her and starred in two comedy pilots for Fox, This Week Has 7 Days and No. 1 Show in America. He has also appeared on The Jimmy Kimmel Show, The Man Show, and as a frequent contributor to VH1.

Attell's first appearance on television was in 1988 on VH1's Stand-Up Spotlight, which also featured early appearances by Lewis Black, Margaret Cho, Jeff Garlin, Jay Mohr and Wanda Sykes. The show was hosted by Rosie O'Donnell. But perhaps his biggest break to date was achieved on November 23, 1993 when he made his debut on The Late Show with David Letterman. The appearance was seen by Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, who then recruited Attell to be a writer, and occasional performer, on SNL (you can see Attell behind Chris Farley during the famous "Rudy Giuliani Inauguration" sketch). Attell worked on the show for the '93-'94 season. In 1995, Attell was featured on two HBO specials: alongside up-and-comers Louis C.K., Anthony Clark, Eric Tunney and Dave Chappelle, he was a featured performer on the 1995 Young Comedians Special, hosted by Garry Shandling; and he was also given his own 60-minute special on the channel's "HBO Comedy Showcase". Subsequently, Attell was also given an episode of HBO Comedy Half-Hour in 1997. Also in 1995, Attell appeared as Squiggly Dave on Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, kicking-off a long-standing relationship between Attell and Comedy Central. In 1999, the network issued Attell an installment in their ever-popular Comedy Central Presents series. The same year, the network signed him on as a regular commentator on their satirical news show The Daily Show. When he arrived in 1999, the show was just finding its audience after the departure of host Craig Kilborn and the arrival of Jon Stewart, an old friend of Attell's from the New York comedy circuit. The three-year stint gave Attell access to a mass audience on a regular basis (The Daily Show has done much the same for comedians Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Lewis Black and others). Attell's series of commentary on the show was called "The Ugly American". In 2003, Attell began appearing semi-regularly on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn. The show featured many of the performers he works with every day at the (literally) underground comedy club the Comedy Cellar and is based on the conversations they would have off-stage at the Olive Tree Cafe, the restaurant above the club. The unscripted show was canceled in November of 2004 due to poor ratings and controversial subject matter. In 2007, Attell is appearing in the Michael Addis film, Heckler. Heckler is a comedic feature documentary exploring the increasingly critical world we live in.

A gifted scene stealer, Ed Helms leads the pack of a new generation of comedy stars. Not just a talented comedian, Helms is also a versatile actor and accomplished writer. Currently, Helms portrays Dunder Mifflin's irrepressible salesman-with-anger-management-issues, 'Andy Bernard' on NBC's hit comedy "The Office," part of the network's 'Must See TV' line-up on Thursday nights. The show won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2006, the SAG Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2007 and 2008 and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy in 2007 and an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2007. Next on the big screen, Helms stars in 20th Century Fox's comedy "Meet Dave" opposite Eddie Murphy and Elizabeth Banks. Directed by Brian Robbins, the film follows a crew of miniature aliens operating a spaceship that has a human form. While trying to save their planet, the aliens encounter a new problem, as their ship becomes smitten with an Earth woman. The film will open on July 11, 2008. Most recently, he wrapped the comedy "The Goods: The Don Ready Story," directed by Neal Brennan. The film revolves around salesman Don Ready (Jeremy Piven) and his crew who are asked to help save an ailing local car dealership from bankruptcy. Paramount Vantage will open the film this October. Also a talented writer, Helms is currently developing the film "A Whole New Hugh" with Judd Apatow for Universal. He will star in and co-write the project with Jake Fleisher and Ian Berger. The film follows the story of three guys who try to boost their friend's confidence by making him appear to be successful. Helms is perhaps most familiar to television audiences from his four-year stint as a Senior Correspondent on the Emmy Award-winning "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," for which he also wrote. His additional TV credits include Comedy Central's "Premium Blend" and the Emmy-winning Fox comedy "Arrested Development."

Jason Jones is a very, very, very...very busy actor. His film work is extremely important to him, so he chooses to adopt only the finest roles. His gems include the taut, straight-to-video psychological thriller After Alice (playing the highly coveted part of Rookie Cop) and the award-winning television masterpiece Terminal Invasion, in which aliens in human disguise commandeer a rural airport during a snowstorm. And who could forget the unforgettable 13 minutes of screen time Jason had in the Sci Fi Channel's original film Webs, when his character (Junior) and a local team of wacky electricians, led by Sir Richard Greico, teleport to a parallel universe where human-looking alien spiders run amok? But beyond all the glitz and glamour of those prestigious projects, Jason is most proud of the trilogy of "based on a true story" films from which he has been cut--America's Prince: The JFK Jr. Story; All-American Girl: The Mary Kay Letourneau Story; and, most recently, the Meg Ryan box-office bonanza Against the Ropes: The Jackie Kallen Story...in which he shared absolutely no screen time with Meg Ryan. After film comes TV, and boy has Jason been around the block. He has appeared on lots of shows that feature prominent actors who have won lots of awards. He was featured on the Soap Opera where all the men still have moustaches and he was on that show where the queer folk had all the gay sex. Most recently, he hosted an extreme crafting game show on an upper digital-cable channel. 168, I think, I dunno, could be higher. Originally from Canada, Jason has appeared in countless Canadian projects you've never heard of, and if he started to describe them, you'd immediately fall asleep. Suffice it to say, a few of them had to do with Mounties, Saskatchewan and the plight of the mid-18th-century East Coast miner. Currently, Jason can be seen on a show that is Daily and will soon be appearing alongside Ms. Congeniality.

John Hodgman is the program's resident expert, available for comment on such matters as currency rates, planetary bodies, mixed martial arts, American Idol, and lice. Apart from the many fake books he has advertised on the show, he is the author of one actual book entitled The Areas of My Expertise, although that is a book of fake facts. And also, scholars dispute whether "John Hodgman" actually wrote it. His new book, More Information Than You Require is being written, arguably by him. He remains a Contributing Writer at the New York Times Magazine and yes, really was a cheesemonger. That is all.

John Oliver was born and raised in England, Great Britain, in the year of punk 1977. His passport lists his occupation as 'comedian' and as we all know, passports never lie. He has worked as a stand-up comedian around the UK entertaining and irritating audiences in equal measure for the last 7 years, and has regularly taken shows to the Edinburgh Festival. With his friend and long time collaborator Andy Zaltzman, John wrote and starred in three series of 'The Department' for BBC Radio 4. It centered around a three man 'think tank' who each week solved one of the world's major problems. Hopefully one day it will be available on CD, but as things stand it looks like that will be the same day that you can first don ice skates and pirouette across the fiery rivers of hell. They also wrote and presented 'Political Animal' where they linked the satirical material of various stand-ups with sketches which included firing themselves out of a water canon at a crowd of protestors, contracting bird flu and getting into a gun fight with the Queen. In the course of his career, John has received no awards worth mentioning but did receive a letter of complaint from Buckingham Palace, which is clearly a lot better. When The Daily Show with Jon Stewart came knocking at his door, John flung it open and jumped into their arms with a relish which made all parties slightly uncomfortable. He is very pleased to be coming to ply his trade in your country, as to be honest he had all but burnt his bridges in his own.

Jon Stewart is considered one of America's top social and comedic voices. From his anchor chair on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," "Stewart has breathed new life into a show that hadn't even seemed to need it," said The New York Times. Since taking over as the host of "The Daily Show" in January, 1999, Stewart's presence has seen higher ratings and awareness for himself, as well as the network. As host of "The Daily Show" Stewart has interviewed such luminaries as former President Bill Clinton, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, John Kerry, Barack Obama, John McCain, John Edwards and Bob Dole and such celebrity icons as Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis. Since arriving in 1999, Stewart and "The Daily Show" have received 24 Emmy Award nominations and won 10 times. These include winning for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program five times (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and last year in 2006) as well as Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series for the past five consecutive years (2003-2007). George Carlin, Larry King and Jules Feiffer love Lewis Black. They love him because his insights and love/hate relationship with America are brilliantly expressed in his concerts and TV appearances worldwide. How can you not love a man who says, "Republicans are a party with bad ideas and Democrats are a party with no ideas." Will Rogers would have been proud. Lewis is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs over 200 nights a year to sell out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and The United States. He is one of few performers to sell out multiple, renowned theatres including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In August 2007, he will be the first stand-up comedian to ever perform in concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Lewis' live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. Lewis yells so they don't have to. A passionate performer who is more pissed off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon, he's perfected expressing what the rest of us can not say in polite company. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. It's no wonder he's been compared to Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, and Bill Hicks. Lewis was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Silver Spring, MD. Colicky as a baby, it seems he was destined to be angry and easily irritated. His mother, a teacher, and his father, a mechanical engineer, instilled in both Lewis and his younger brother Ron the importance of education and the necessity to question authority; lessons which have influenced Lewis throughout his private and professional life. When Lewis was 12, his father took him to his first play and he quickly fell in love with the theatre. This ultimately led Lewis to pursue a career in drama. Degrees followed from the University of North Carolina and Yale Drama School, with a stint in Colorado owning a theatre with a group of friends in the interim. During his tenure at UNC, Lewis first ventured into stand-up, performing at Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill. Stand-up continued to be a steady presence as he pursued his career in theatre. Lewis eventually settled in New York City and became the playwright-in-residence at the West Bank Cafe's Downstairs Theatre Bar. Lewis oversaw the development of more than 1,000 plays, including works by West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin, American Beauty writer Alan Ball as well as his own original works. In addition to overseeing the works on stage, Lewis emceed every show. As the West Bank grew, so did Lewis' skill as a stand-up and eventually, the fulfillment of performing stand-up outweighed that of working in the theater. Having found his public voice, Lewis left the West Bank in the late 80's to pursue stand-up full time. In 1996, his friend Lizz Winstead tapped him to create a weekly segment for a show she was producing on Comedy Central called The Daily Show. The segment, a three minute rant about whatever was bothering him at the moment, evolved into Back in Black. It became one of the most popular and longest running segments on the show and also created a long and successful relationship with the network. Since then, Lewis has taped four specials for the Comedy Central Presents series, co-created Last Laugh with Lewis Black and continues to perform Back in Black on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart today. These popular appearances on Comedy Central helped to win him Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards in 2001. Increased exposure from The Daily Show eventually generated a record deal with Stand Up! Records. His first CD, The White Album, was released in 2000 to much critical acclaim. Lewis followed with five more, three under the Comedy...

Stephen Colbert should be a very familiar face to Comedy Central viewers. For years he served as a correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, reporting on anything and everything from presidential blunders, to the post-Michael Jordan NBA, to a man with a self-made UFO Welcome Center in the front yard of his trailer home. Born and raised in South Carolina, Colbert began making a name for himself in Chicago as a member of the famed Second City improv troupe where he met Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. After several years at Second City, the threesome moved to New York City and, along with others, developed EXIT 57, a half-hour sketch comedy series for HBO Downtown Productions which ran for two seasons during the mid-'90s on Comedy Central. EXIT 57 received five CableACE nominations for best writing, performing and comedy series. Colbert reunited with the Sedaris and Dinello to create Comedy Central's first ever, live-action, narrative series, Strangers with Candy, a twisted take on the classic and typically moralistic afterschool specials, a feature-length film is also in the works. In addition to his work on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Colbert served as both a writer and a cast member on The Dana Carvey Show, was a guest star on Spin City and has written for Saturday Night Live. In October 2005, Stephen Colbert went on to anchor his own half-hour program, The Colbert Report. He has since changed the landscape of television with his insights into politics and bears, even coining a new word: Truthiness.
