Born and raised in the Philippines, Wan Ling and her family immigrated to the U.S. for better educational opportunities. She, as did her four siblings, took advantage of those opportunities and went on to earn advanced degrees. Wan Ling is a CPA and has an MBA in Management Information Systems from the University of Minnesota. She started her career at Kraft where she spent 10 years in diverse financial roles including audit, international reporting, financial systems, strategic planning and financial planning and analysis. After that, she accepted the position of Corporate Controller for Borden Foods and then went on to lead a smaller but exciting company, NCH Marketing Services, a global provider of promotional management solutions, where she was the U.S. President. Three years ago, Wan Ling was hired by Wal-Mart International to be CFO and one year later, she was asked to take on strategy as an additional responsibility, playing an important role in shaping the strategic direction of Wal-Mart's international business. Her ability to speak multiple languages including Mandarin Chinese has been very useful in her present position. Wan Ling's father was her role model and mentor, who "taught her self-reliance and clear thinking", skills she has applied well in her life. When asked about advice to women climbing the corporate ladder, Wan Ling responded that "you are the master of your own destiny ... and never forget it is just as important to help others to succeed as well". Wan Ling very much follows her own advice and she mentors many associates at Wal-Mart, truly believing it is her job to help them succeed. When Wan Ling was a panelist at an AWIB Corporate Leadership Conference in 2006, she was everyone's favorite speaker. She received dozens of emails from attendees and despite her busy schedule, mentored several of the women. Wan Ling is active in the Committee of 100 and a member of the International Women's Forum.
