Nothing pleases Jim Hopes more than to see an organization change for the better because he had the opportunity to contribute to the growth of its sales managers and salespeople. Steve Marx already knew this. And in 1992 Jim became the first addition to the CSS staff when Steve made him a Partner in the company. Since then Steve and Jim have quintupled the company's revenue and added nine Senior Consultants. Jim first got into sales at radio station WTIG in Canton, Ohio and shocked everyone when he became VP/GM of the station at age 23. It just seemed like a natural progression to Jim, though, and when his team set new revenue records, Miller Broadcasting sent him to Sandusky, Ohio to run their AM/FM combo, where the call letters Jim picked in 1970 still stand. Following these spectacular successes, Jim was 'head-hunted' to become VP/Sales for Scantland Communications, a company that produced both newspaper and radio. Lady Luck had a hand too, when Jim found himself attending the same Gallup Organization program as the top execs from Katz Broadcasting (to become NewCity Communications and later, CSS). They recruited him to become the General Sales Manager for their highly successful radio station, WZZK in Birmingham, Alabama. Since joining CSS, Jim has performed consulting and training services in many of the company's largest radio and television markets in the USA (LA, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami), and in Australia and Malaysia. Jim has a passion for training and developing talented people, and the most gratifying part of his job today is the constant recognition he gets from clients and associates, alike. He's known to all as a good listener, an objective thinker, and a great problem solver. Clients throughout America and beyond routinely include Jim Hopes in work at the corporate level, on projects ranging from long-term strategic planning to compensation design and talent selection.

In professional terms, that is the moment Mike lives for, and it's the reason he was recruited to join CSS in June 2002 as our Director of Communication. It is Mike's job working with the rest of our team to help design and refine the tools and systems CSS offers to advance the practice of broadcast sales and marketing, helping keep our hundreds of broadcast clients worldwide a step ahead. In recognition of Mike's wide-ranging contributions and accomplishments since joining CSS, and added responsibilities of heading up the new online Sales Edge and Edgewise, Mike was appointed to Vice President, Communication in 2006. Immediately prior to joining CSS, Mike spent five years as the creative director for Infinity Broadcasting/Twin Cities (WLTE, WXPT, WCCO, and KCCO). In that position, he was the primary source of marketing research, commercial creative, and presentation strategies for a wide variety of account executives and their advertising clients. He developed a wide variety of interactive presentation tools, including a Virtual Service Department for the company's intranet, "one-minute media kits" (movies delivered by e-mail), and CD-ROM resource kits. Mike has been in the broadcasting and advertising business since 1977, starting on-air at KKXL Grand Forks, North Dakota (when there was still rock music on the AM dial!). Recognizing that creative solutions make an important contribution to the sales process, Mike soon migrated from the production room to the sales department. He makes no apologies for spending the first 15 years of his career in small markets: Where ratings are tough to come by, the only thing that matters is achieving results for advertisers. That passion has made Mike totally compatible with the focus and principles of CSS. Mike has worked in a variety of positions in radio, including Program Director, Account Executive, Promotions Director, Production Director, and General Manager. One of his former GMs even gave Mike the unofficial title of "Director of Everything Else." Mike has been a freelance writer, editor, and creative advisor for the Radio Advertising Bureau, and served a two-year term on the Planning Committee for RAB Conventions. He has served a three-year term on the Radio Advisory Board for Scarborough Research.
