Dow Jones Description

Oil Heat has a remarkable reliability and safety record. Oil heat and use of heating oil has grown steadily from modest beginnings, and today there are over ten million oil heated homes in America, along with several million additional oil burners being used in commercial buildings, mobile homes, water heaters, incinerators, swimming pool heaters, and unit heaters. Heating oil is a fossil fuel, as is natural gas, propane, and coal. They all consist of hydrocarbons, There are over 36 oil producing countries. Number 2 Fuel oil commonly referred to as heating oil, is the fuel normally used for home heating. The specification for heating oil is ASTM D 396. Number 2 heating oil is intended for oil heat applications for use in atomizing gun burners which spray oil into a combustion chamber where tiny droplets burn in suspension. The flash point for number 2 heating oil, as per the ASTM specification is 100 degrees F. One notable point is that in the event of a fuel leak, the fuel must be heated above the flash point in order for a fire hazard to exist. The standard BTU content for heating oil is 138,500 BTU per gallon. A recent trend in heating oil is to reduce the sulfur content to below 500 ppm. Reduced sulfur levels in heating oil and fuel oil translate into cleaner boilers and furnaces and higher efficiencies. Heating oil is dyed red to prevent it from being mixed with diesel motor fuel. ...
