Co.'s Surface Transportation business, which includes its rail and intermodal businesses, provides rail-based transportation services including traditional rail service and the transport of intermodal containers and trailers. As at Dec 28 2007, Co. operated two business segments: rail segment, which provides rail freight transportation over a network of approximately 21,000 route miles in 23 states, the District of Columbia and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec; and intermodal segment, which provides integrated rail and truck transportation services and operates a network of intermodal facilities across North America.
