WILLIAM A. CARTER, M.D., the co-inventor of Ampligen(R), joined us in 1978, and has served as: (a) our Chief Scientific Officer since May 1989; (b) the Chairman of our Board of Directors since January 1992; (c) our Chief Executive Officer since July 1993; (d) our President since April, 1995; and (e) a director since 1987. From 1987 to 1988, Dr. Carter served as our Chairman. Dr. Carter was a leading innovator in the development of human interferon for a variety of treatment indications including various viral diseases and cancer. Dr. Carter received the first FDA approval to initiate clinical trials on a beta interferon product manufactured in the U.S. under his supervision. From 1985 to October 1988, Dr. Carter served as our Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientist. He received his M.D. degree from Duke University and underwent his post-doctoral training at the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Carter also served as Professor of Neoplastic Diseases at Hahnemann Medical University, a position he held from 1980 to 1998. Dr. Carter served as Director of Clinical Research for Hahnemann Medical University's Institute for Cancer and Blood Diseases, and as a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Carter is a Board certified physician and author of more than 200 scientific articles, including the editing of various textbooks on anti-viral and immune therapy.

Mr. Bernhardt has served as Chief Financial Officer of the Company since January 2009. Prior to joining Hemispherx, Mr. Bernhardt most recently was the Director of Accounting for Healthcare Division of Thomson Reuters (NYSE-TRI), an overall company with $12 billion in annual revenues and 50,000 total world-wide employees. He was responsible for their Healthcare Division’s accounting operations as well as the shared financial services for the Healthcare and Scientific Divisions. Earlier in his career, he was a Regional Controller for Comcast Cable, Director of Finance for TelAmerica Media and is an alumni of public accounting’s Big Four in KPMG. Mr. Bernhardt is a graduate of Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and an MBA from West Chester University.

Dr. Smith has served as the Company's Director of Manufacturing and Process Development since April 1995, as Director of Operations since 1993 and as the Manager of Quality Control from 1991 to 1993, with responsibility for the manufacture, control and chemistry of Ampligen®. Dr. Smith has also been Scientist/Quality Assurance Officer for Virotech International, Inc. from 1989 to 1991 and Director of the Reverse Transcriptase and Interferon Laboratories and a Clinical Monitor for Life Sciences, Inc. from 1983 to 1989. She received her Ph.D. from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 1980 and was an NIH post-doctoral fellow at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.

MEI-JUNE LIAO, Ph.D. has served as Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, Quality and Research & Development since October 2003 and as Vice President of Research & Development since March 2003 with responsibilities for the regulatory, quality control and product development of Alferon(R). Before the acquisition of certain assets of ISI, Dr. Liao was Vice President of Research and Development from 1995 to 2003 and held senior positions in the Research and Development Department of ISI from 1983 to 1994. Dr. Liao received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1980 and completed a three year postdoctoral appointment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the direction of Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Professor H. Gobind Khorana. Dr. Liao has authored many scientific publications and invention disclosures.
RUSSEL J. LANDER, Ph.D. is Vice President Quality Assurance. Dr. Lander joined Hemispherx in 2005, assuming responsibility for CMC writing for the NDA filing of Ampligen(R). He has subsequently served at the New Brunswick site as Director of Quality Control and has provided guidance to the efforts to improve and validate the manufacturing process for the synthesis of Ampligen(R) polynucleotide raw materials, Poly I and Poly C12U. Dr. Lander was formerly employed at Merck and Co., Inc. in the process development groups for drug development (1977-1991) and vaccines (1991-2005). Dr. Lander received his Ph.D. in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He has authored numerous scientific publications and invention disclosures.
Kati Kovari, M.D. was paid $13,000 in 2008 for her part-time services to us as Assistant Medical Director. Dr. Kovari is the spouse of Dr. Carter, our Chairman and CEO.
Dr. Rahal is Director of the Infectious Disease Section of the New York Hospital Queens, Professor of Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, President of New York Society of Infectious Diseases and internationally renowned expert in the field of infection control. Dr. Rahal was one of the first physicians to study West Nile virus (WNV) commencing in 1999, when the illness, which is carried by mosquitoes, was first detected in the United States. Dr. Rahal has conducted a nationwide clinical trail for therapy of WNV with interferon alpha-2b, using Shering Plough's product, Intron A, in an effort to treat hospitalized patients.

Ransom W. Etheridge, our General Counsel and a former director, is an attorney in private practice, who renders corporate legal services to us from time to time, for which he has received fees totaling approximately $105,400 in 2008. In addition, Mr. Etheridge served on the Board of Directors until November 2008. For his service as a Director in 2008, he received Director's Fees of $112,500 in cash and stock. We use the property acquired in late 2004 by Retreat House, LLC, an entity in which the children of William A. Carter have a beneficial interest. We paid Retreat House, LLC $41,200 in 2008, for the use of the property at various times.

Dr. Gwaltney is Chief of the Division of Epidemiology and Virology at the University of Virginia, Director of the Center for Prevention Disease and Injury, and Professor Emeritus. Dr. Gwaltney's clinical interest include infectious diseases, clinical virology and acute respiratory disease. Over the past three decades, his research interests have been in the common cold, upper respiratory infections and influenza. Dr. Gwaltney in internationally recognized for more than 30 years of research on rhinoviruses and is author of more than 300 published articles, book chapters and books. He is the recipient of a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health and is co-editor of the textbook "Infectious Disease and Antimicrobial Therapy of the Ears, Nose,and Throat."
Dr. Montagnier has been an active researcher in oncology and virology for almost four decades. Throughout the 1970's and 1980's he focused on RNA tumor viruses and did extensive work on interferon in both animal and human systems. In 1983, as head of the Viral Oncology Unit at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, he and his colleagues discovered the human retrovirus, which later became known as HIV-1, the etiologic agent of AIDS. In 1985, his team isolated the second human AIDS virus, HIV-2. Since then, he has coordinated the work of a distinguished group of collaborators on the mechanisms of AIDS pathogenesis. Today Dr. Montagnier heads the "Aids and Retrovirus" department at the Pasteur Institute, is Chairman of the World Foundation for AIDS Research and Prevention, which he co-founded in 1993, and holds the position of Distinguished Professor at Queens College in New York.

IRAJ E. KIANI, M.B.A., Ph.D., was appointed to the Board of Directors on May 1, 2002. Dr. Kiani is a citizen of England and resides in Newport, California. Dr. Kiani served in various local government position including the Governor of Yasoi, Capital of Boyerahmand, Iran. In 1980, Dr. Kiani moved to England, where he established and managed several trading companies over a period of some 20 years. Dr. Kiani is a planning and logistic specialist who is now applying his knowledge and experience to build a worldwide immunology network, which will use the Company's proprietary technology. Dr. Kiani received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Ferdosi in Iran.
Mr. Peterson has served as Chief Financial Officer of the Company since April 1993 and served as an independent financial advisor to the Company from 1989 to April 1993. Also, Mr. Peterson has served as Vice President of the Omni Group, Inc., a business consulting group based in Tulsa, Oklahoma since 1985.From 1971 to 1984, Mr. Peterson worked for PepsiCo, Inc. and served in various financial management positions including Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of PesiCo Foods International and PepsiCo Transportation, Inc. Mr. Peterson is a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University.

William M. Mitchell, M.D. has been a director of ours since July 1998. Mr. Mitchell is a Professor of Pathology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Mitchell earned a M.D. from Vanderbilt and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, where he served as an Intern in Internal Medicine, followed by a Fellowship at its School of Medicine. Dr. Mitchell has published over 200 papers, reviews and abstracts dealing with viruses and anti-viral drugs. Dr. Mitchell has worked for and with many professional societies, including the International Society for Interferon Research, and committees, among them the National Institutes of Health, AIDS and Related Research Review Group. Dr. Mitchell previously served as a director of Hemispherx from 1987 to 1989.
