Brett Carter is president of Duke Energy Carolinas. He leads Duke Energy’s utility business in North Carolina and South Carolina, serving approximately 2.4 million customers in a 24,000-square-mile service area. He was named to his current position in 2008.
Most recently, Carter served as senior vice president of customer service and business development for Duke Energy. He was responsible for acquiring and retaining new wholesale customers; providing sales and services to the company’s existing large commercial and industrial customers; and generating and cultivating economic development opportunities. In addition, he was responsible for the customer service function, which includes call center operations, revenue services and customer support.
Prior to that, Carter served as vice president of call center operations for Duke Energy’s U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas organization. He was responsible for optimizing customer satisfaction for the company’s 4 million customers utilizing its nine regional call centers. These call centers handled more than 11 million transactions annually, including phone, e-mail and Internet.
Carter joined Duke Power in July 2005 as vice president of residential and small business customers. He was also responsible for marketing strategy and operations of the Customer Service Center.
Prior to joining the company, he served as vice president of the central services division for Aquila in Kansas City, Mo. He was responsible for Aquila’s 1.4 million customers, including oversight of two call centers, information technology, customer account management, customer solutions and Six Sigma special projects.
The Pittsburgh, Pa., native earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and a master of business administration degree, with a concentration in marketing, from the University of Pittsburgh. He also completed the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.
Carter is active in a number of community and professional activities. He is a member of the board of directors and serves as chair of the Business Development Committee for the Crisis Assistance Ministry of Charlotte. In 2008, Carter was appointed by N.C. Governor Mike Easley to serve on the North Carolina State Ports Authority Board. He is also a member of Leadership Charlotte.
Carter and his wife, Rebecca, have a daughter and two sons.

Jim Stanley is president of Duke Energy Indiana. He leads the Indiana utility business, Indiana’s largest electric supplier, providing electric service to approximately 775,000 customers in 69 of Indiana’s 92 counties.
Most recently, Stanley served as vice president of field operations – Midwest for Duke Energy. He was responsible for transmission and distribution and maintenance, substation construction and maintenance, premise services, customer service engineering, and electric outage response for the Duke Energy Midwest service area.
A 30-year career with PSI Energy, Cinergy and Duke Energy includes assignments in a variety of departments from accounting to human resources to field management. Stanley joined PSI Energy in June 1977. He began his field operations career in roles of district and regional manager. He has also served as general manager of employee and union relations, general manager of transmission and distribution projects, and vice president of transmission and distribution construction and maintenance. He was named to his current position in November 2006.
Stanley is active in the community and currently serves on several boards of directors, including the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP), Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Central Indiana, YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, and the Indiana Legal Foundation. He is also a board member of the Indiana Manufacturers Association, the Indiana Energy Association and the Indiana Utility Shareholders Association.
Stanley is a past chairman and current board member of Special Olympics Indiana. He is a past member of the board of directors of Reliant Services Corp., Greater Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement of the Wabash Valley, March of Dimes Wabash Valley Division, Lawrence County United Way, and Lawrence County Economic Development Corporation. He also served on the Executive Committee of Wabash Valley Alliance for Growth and Progress. He is a past member of the Lawrence County Who’s Who, past board president of the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, and past president and treasurer of the Lawrence County United Way Board and the Lawrence County Community Foundation Steering Committee.

Julie Janson is president of Duke Energy Ohio and Duke Energy Kentucky. She leads Duke Energy's Ohio and Kentucky operations, serving approximately 690,000 customers in southwest Ohio and approximately 135,000 customers in six northern Kentucky counties. She was named to her current position in December 2008. Previously, Janson served as senior vice president of ethics and compliance, and corporate secretary for Duke Energy, a position she held since 2006. Prior to that, she served as corporate secretary and chief compliance officer for Cinergy Corp. She was appointed chief compliance officer in 2004 and corporate secretary in 2000. From 1998 to 2004, Janson served as senior counsel, providing advice on general corporate, corporate governance and securities-related matters. From 1996 to 1998, Janson served as counsel for Cinergy, providing research, advice and support for divestitures, mergers and acquisitions, and several internal clients including investor relations, shareholder services, corporate communications and government and regulatory affairs. She also served as corporate counsel to the international business unit. She was manager of investor relations for Cinergy from 1995 to 1996. Prior to joining Cinergy, Janson was corporate attorney for The Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company (CG&E), playing a role in the merger of CG&E and PSI Energy, which formed Cinergy Corp. Before joining CG&E, she served as a law clerk with Adams, Brooking, Stepner, Wolterman & Dusing in Covington, Ky. She earned a juris doctor degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. She also holds a bachelor of arts degree in American Studies from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. Janson is a member of the bar associations of Ohio and Kentucky, with legal experience that spans more than 20 years. She is a past member of the board of trustees of Lighthouse Youth Services. Janson is currently involved in a number of community and professional activities. She serves on the board of directors and the Executive Committee of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. Keith Trent is group executive and president of the Commercial Businesses organization for Duke Energy. Dr. Sharp has served as President of Resources for the Future since 2005. Cathy Roche is senior vice president and chief communications officer for Duke Energy. She is responsible for directing and managing the company’s communications with both internal and external audiences, including the media and customers of the company’s franchised electric and gas utilities. She is also responsible for executive communications, corporate publications, advertising, and brand management and strategy.
Roche has more than 25 years of experience in the communications field. She joined Duke Energy in February 2000 as director of external relations in the public affairs department. Her responsibilities included media relations, emergency communications and financial communications. In February 2003, Roche was named vice president of corporate communications. She was named to her current position in December 2006.
Before joining Duke Energy, Roche served as vice president of corporate communications for Entergy Corporation in New Orleans, La., from 1996 to 1999; and vice president of public and industry communications for the Nuclear Energy Institute in Washington, D.C., from 1989 to 1996. She was director of publications for Duke Power from 1983 to 1989, and worked as a self-employed public relations consultant from 1980 to 1983. Before becoming a public relations professional, Roche worked as a reporter for 10 years with The Associated Press and The Charlotte News.
A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Roche graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism. Roche serves on the Board of Visitors of the University of North Carolina School of Journalism and the Board of Visitors of the Carolina Environmental Program, also at UNC-CH.
Roche and her husband Terry live in Charlotte, N.C. They have two grown sons.

Chris Rolfe is group executive and chief administrative officer for Duke Energy. He is responsible for supply chain, information technology, operations services and other administrative activities.
Prior to his current role, Rolfe served as group executive and chief human resources officer where he led the human resources function, including HR and labor policy, diversity, management and employee development, and compensation and benefits.
Rolfe joined Duke Power in 1972 as an engineering assistant in the design engineering department. He worked on most of Duke Power’s fossil, hydro and nuclear projects. After a series of promotions in the engineering department, Rolfe assumed leadership of the company’s research and development activities. He was named vice president of corporate performance in 1992, with responsibility for corporate quality initiatives. He was named vice president of corporate human resources in 1997 and vice president of human resources in December 2000. Rolfe was named to his current position in November 2007.
A native of Richmond, Va., Rolfe graduated from North Carolina State University with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Rolfe has served on many industry and nonprofit boards of directors and is currently chairman of the North Carolina Commission on Workforce Development. He is also a recipient of the 2007 Jack Callahan Cornerstone Award from Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont of North Carolina. The award recognized Rolfe for his years of volunteer service and leadership in workforce development at the local, state and national levels.

David Mohler is vice president and chief technology officer for Duke Energy. He is responsible for the development and application of technologies in support of Duke Energy’s strategic objectives. He was named to his current position in October 2006.

Dhiaa Jamil is group executive and chief nuclear officer for Duke Energy. He is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the company’s three nuclear generating stations – Catawba, McGuire and Oconee nuclear stations. He was named to his current position in January 2008.
Jamil has more than 28 years of experience in the energy industry.
Most recently, Jamil served as senior vice president of nuclear support. He led the organization responsible for plant support, major projects and fuel management for Duke Energy’s nuclear fleet. In addition, he was responsible for regulatory support, nuclear oversight and safety analysis functions.
He joined Duke Power in 1981 as a design engineer in the design engineering department. After a series of promotions, he was named electrical systems engineering supervisor of Oconee Nuclear Station in 1989 and electrical systems engineering manager in 1994. He was named maintenance superintendent of McGuire Nuclear Station in 1997; station manager in 1999; and site vice president of McGuire Nuclear Station in 2002. In that role, Jamil was responsible for all aspects of the safe and efficient operation of the nuclear site. He was appointed site vice president of Catawba Nuclear Station in 2003.
Jamil received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
He is a registered professional engineer in North Carolina and South Carolina. He has completed the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations’ (INPO) senior nuclear plant management course and received Duke Energy’s technical nuclear certification. He has served as a senior member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and has completed a three-year assignment as a member of the Council of the National Academy for Nuclear Training. He is a former member of Dominion Energy Management Safety Review Advisory Committee, TVA Nuclear Safety Review Board and Pacific Gas & Electric Nuclear Safety Oversight Committee. He also served on the board of directors of the York County, S.C., Chamber of Commerce.
Jamil is currently a member of the board of directors of the Charlotte Research Institute and serves on an advisory board for the School of Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is a member of the INPO Executive Advisory Group, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) New Plant Oversight Committee and the NEI Nuclear Strategic Issues Advisory Committee Steering Group.
Jamil was born in 1956. He and his wife, the former Hope Robertson of Norman, Okla., have a daughter and two sons.

Jeff Browning is vice president of audit services and chief ethics and compliance officer for Duke Energy. Marc Manly is a group executive, chief legal officer and corporate secretary for Duke Energy. He leads the office of general counsel, which includes internal audit, ethics and compliance, legal and human resources. In December 2008, Manly assumed the additional responsibility of corporate secretary.
Manly has served as group executive and chief legal officer for Duke Energy since April 2006. Previously, he served as executive vice president and chief legal officer of Cinergy Corp., a position he held since November 2002. From 2000 to 2002, Manly was managing director for law and governmental affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary at NewPower Holdings Inc., a national retailer of electricity and natural gas to the residential market. Before his position with NewPower, from 1995 to 2000, he was with AT&T Corp. first as vice president and solicitor general, and then as vice president and chief counsel for the consumer services group. Prior to joining AT&T’s legal department, Manly was a member of the law firm of Sidley & Austin, as an associate from 1978 to 1985 and as a partner from 1986 to 1994.
Manly earned a juris doctor degree, magna cum laude, and a master of economics degree from the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the Law Review and Order of the Coif. He also earned a bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, in economics from Amherst College, where he was Phi Beta Kappa.

Roberta Bowman is senior vice president and chief sustainability officer for Duke Energy. She served as the company’s chief communications officer for 10 years, and was appointed senior vice president of public affairs in January 2001. In that role, she led the corporation’s communications, public affairs and community relations functions, including The Duke Energy Foundation. Following the merger with Cinergy in 2006, she was named the company’s first corporate officer in sustainability as vice president of sustainability and community affairs. During her career, Bowman has also had responsibility for public policy; government and regulatory relations; and environment, health and safety.
Prior to joining the company, Bowman worked at Northeast Utilities in Hartford, Conn., from 1978 to 1986. She served as manager of nuclear information.
A native of West Hartford, Conn., Bowman graduated with distinction from Tufts University in Medford, Mass., with a bachelor of arts degree.
In 2007, Bowman was inducted into the North Carolina Public Relations Hall of Fame. Sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the PR Hall of Fame “recognizes individuals who have made exceptionally distinguished and career-long contributions to the field and who are strongly associated with the state of North Carolina.”
Bowman is involved in a number of community and professional activities. She serves on the board of trustees for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, North Carolina’s largest health insurer. She co-chaired the Executive Committee of the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open, which was held at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., and raised charitable funds to benefit a number of North Carolina nonprofits important to women’s health and leadership. Bowman serves on an advisory group for the Foundation For The Carolinas and is a member of Women Corporate Directors and Women Executives. She also served on the boards of directors of the Public Affairs Council, Afro-American Cultural Center and Communications Council of the United Way.

Stephen De May is senior vice president, treasurer and chief risk officer for Duke Energy. In 1994, he joined the company's corporate finance group, and in 1996, completed an extended risk management assignment at the company's energy trading and marketing affiliate in Connecticut. Following the merger of Duke Power and PanEnergy, De May managed the corporate finance group until June 1999, at which time he was appointed vice president of business unit finance. During 2004 and 2005, he served as vice president of energy and environmental policy, with responsibility for achieving the company’s public policy objectives related to key energy and environmental issues. Following the merger between Duke Energy and Cinergy in April 2006, he served as general manager, corporate finance and assistant treasurer for the company. Most recently, De May served as vice president and treasurer for Duke Energy, a position held since 2007.
Before joining Duke Energy, De May served as senior tax consultant for Deloitte & Touche and tax consultant for Price Waterhouse.
De May graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and a master of business administration degree from the McColl Graduate School of Business at Queens University of Charlotte. He is a certified public accountant in North Carolina.

Raiford Smith is Director of Product Development for Duke Energy. He is responsible for leading the creation and implementation of energy-related products for all customer segments across Duke Energy's electric and gas retail franchises in Ohio , Kentucky , Indiana , North Carolina , and South Carolina . He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Georgia and a Masters of Business Administration from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia . Additionally, he is a certified Six Sigma green belt, a winner of the 2006 Southeastern Electric Exchange Industry Excellence Award for Rates and Regulation Category, a board member of the Southeastern Energy Efficiency Alliance, and has published several papers on asset optimization and price forecasting.

Steve Young is senior vice president and controller for Duke Energy. He is responsible for planning and directing the accounting affairs of the company, including preparation of financial statements and accounting and regulatory reports.
Young joined Duke Power in 1980 as a financial assistant. After a series of promotions within the controller's department, he was named manager of bulk power agreements in system planning and operating in 1991, and manager of the rate department in 1993. Young was appointed vice president of rates and regulatory affairs in April 1998, where he was responsible for Duke Power’s regulatory strategies and policies in rate, financial and accounting matters. He was also accountable for the company’s interaction with the utilities commissions of North Carolina and South Carolina and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. He was named senior vice president and chief financial officer for Duke Power in February 2003 and group vice president and chief financial officer in March 2004. He was named vice president and controller in June 2005. Young was named to his current position in December 2006.
A native of Denver, Colo., Young earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Young is a certified public accountant and a certified managerial accountant in North Carolina. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Institute of Managerial Accountants and National Association of Accountants. He is a member of the Edison Electric Institute Accounting Executive Advisory Committee, Southeastern Electric Exchange Accounting and Finance Section, and Financial Executive Institute’s Committee on Corporate Reporting.
Young was born in 1958. He and his wife, Lilly, have a daughter and a son.

Brian Prenda joined the firm as Vice President, increasing Van Scoyoc Associates' expertise in energy-related issues. Mr. Prenda brings 25 years of public, government relations, and lobbying experience to VSA. Mr. Prenda's strong and diverse legal background in legislative and regulatory procedures concerning our nation's energy supply represents an important expansion of VSA's client services. Mr. Prenda joins VSA after serving as Director for Federal Government Relations at Duke Energy Corporation, one of the largest U.S. energy corporations. His industry roles included leadership in the Federal passage of comprehensive pipeline safety legislation, as well as serving as Chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America and Vice President of the Natural Gas Roundtable of Washington, D.C. In addition to his work at Duke Energy, Mr. Prenda has had extensive experience with a number of major energy companies and important energy projects: PanEnergy Corporation, Texas Eastern Corporation, Algonquin Gas Transmission Company, and the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline LLC project. His legislative and regulatory experience covers both Federal and state agencies. Mr. Prenda also brings strong, technical experience in developing public relations and environmental strategies for utility project reviews. His success in routing utility corridors through environmentally sensitive geographic areas ranges from the Canadian provinces to Cape Cod, Maine and New Hampshire, to Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. In each case, energy supply issues were addressed while maintaining the region's environmental integrity. While in private law practice, Mr. Prenda served as legal counsel to The Pocasset Wampanoag Native American Tribe of Fall River, and he represented them in Massachusetts land claim disputes. Mr. Prenda was also involved in working with Las Vegas casino gaming corporations pursuing gaming ventures in Massachusetts. Mr. Prenda earned his Bachelor of Arts at Walsh University in Ohio, a Masters in Public Administration from Suffolk University, and his Juris Doctorate degree at Southern New England School of Law in Massachusetts. He is a member of both the Massachusetts and Federal Bars.

Tina's career experience offers 15 years of contractor management and marketing. Todd Radolec is a civil engineer with McMillen Engineering. He has extensive experience in various disciplines of the profession especially project management, structural design, traffic engineering, water and wastewater engineering, hydraulic engineering, and commercial land development. Todd started his career at McMillen Engineering as a summer intern in 1989. He continued as a part-time intern during his third year of college and started full time after his graduation. Today, he manages projects for the firm including the National Pike Water Authority, Duke Energy Fayette Facility, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa, and Redevelopment Authority of Fayette County Business Park. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Todd holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Dr. Martin has been one of our directors since June 2, 1997. Since July of 2008, he has been Senior Advisor of McGuireWoods Consulting and currently serves as a director for Family Dollar, Inc. and DesignLine, Inc. From 1995 until 2008, he served as Vice President of Carolinas HealthCare System where he was also Chairman of the Research Development Board of Carolinas Medical Center from 1993 until 2000. From 1985 until 1993, Dr. Martin was the Governor of North Carolina. Prior to that position, he served as a United States Congressman from North Carolina from 1973 through 1984. From 1960 until 1972, Dr. Martin was an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Davidson College. Dr. Martin has a B.S. in chemistry from Davidson College and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University.

He served as the Vice Chairman of Bank of America Corporation from 1993 until January 31, 2005 and as the Chief Financial Officer of Bank of America Corporation from 1988 until April 2004.
