Roy Firth is Executive Vice President, Individual Wealth Management, Canadian Division, and Chairman of Manulife Securities and Elliott & Page Limited. His responsibilities include mutual funds and segregated funds, fixed rate annuity products, Manulife Bank, as well as joint responsibility for Distribution of Manulife’s Individual products.
Since 2000, Mr. Firth has led this Business Unit which has seen an era of exceptional growth which has been highlighted by innovative new product development, significant expansion of distribution capabilities, and a more than four-fold increase in earnings.
He joined Manulife in 1998 as President of Elliott & Page Limited and prior to joining Elliott & Page, he spent 10 years at Laurentian Bank of Canada, latterly in the position of Executive Vice-President, Treasury, Risk Management and Strategic Development.
Mr. Firth holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from Concordia University and a Masters of Business Administration degree in Finance and Marketing from Columbia University, New York.

Paul Rooney is President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Financial’s Canadian Division. Previously, Mr. Rooney was appointed Chief Financial Officer for Manulife’s Canadian Division in March 2006. He became Executive Vice President, Individual Insurance in April 2001, where he was responsible for all Individual Insurance activities, including Affinity, and with joint responsibility for Distribution. Mr. Rooney is also President and CEO of Manulife Canada Ltd. and is a member of Manulife Financial’s Executive Committee.
In 1986, Mr. Rooney began his career with Manulife in Toronto’s Corporate Division as an actuarial student. In 1988, he was appointed to the position of Senior Actuarial Associate for the Company’s U.S. Individual Marketing area. He gained further experience in this role with the Corporate Actuarial Department.
In 1991, he was appointed Actuary of the U.S. Corporate Financial area. Three years later he was promoted to Assistant Vice President and Product Manager of U.S. Individual Marketing.
In 1996, Mr. Rooney was named Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, U.S. Savings and Retirement Services and North American Group Pensions. His solid understanding of financial services and previous experience in life, annuity and pension businesses led to his 1998 appointment as Vice President and General Manager of Affinity Markets.
Mr. Rooney holds an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Ontario and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries

Beverly S. John D. DesPrez III is Chief Operating Officer of Manulife Financial Corporation and is responsible for the company’s global Insurance and Wealth Management operations, which are organized into three geographically defined divisions: U.S., Canada and Asia & Japan. He is a member of Manulife’s Executive and Management Committees.
U.S. Division
The U.S. Division, which operates as John Hancock Financial Services, is comprised of two segments: U.S. Insurance and U.S. Wealth Management. U.S. Insurance provides life and long-term care insurance products and services to select markets. U.S. Wealth Management provides products and services to individual and business markets, as well as institutional products for employee benefit plans; its four core business lines are 401(k) plans, variable annuities, mutual funds and fixed products. The Division distributes products through a multi-channel network, including the John Hancock Financial Network, a national network of independent career agencies.
Canada Division
The Canadian Division offers a diverse portfolio of products and services through a variety of distribution channels. Insurance products include individual life and living benefit insurance as well as group life, health, disability and retirement products and services. Individual wealth management products include segregated funds, fixed annuities, guaranteed investment certificates (GICs) and mutual funds. In addition, a variety of banking products including mortgages, leveraged loans, high interest accounts and GICs are offered through the Manulife Bank of Canada.
Asia & Japan Division
The Asia & Japan Division operates in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. It provides protection and wealth management products in select markets throughout the region. Protection products include life insurance, group life and health insurance, and hospital coverage. Wealth management products include mutual funds, pensions, variable annuities and segregated funds.
Mr. DesPrez is based in Boston and is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of John Hancock.
Before taking on his new role as Chief Operating Officer, Mr. DesPrez directed all phases of Manulife’s U.S. and Canadian operations. He assumed responsibility for all of John Hancock operations in September 2005 and all Canadian operations in June 2007. Previously, he led John Hancock’s U.S. Wealth Management businesses, a role he took on after the merger of Manulife and John Hancock in 2004.
From 1998 to June 2004, Mr. DesPrez served as Chairman and President of The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company (U.S.A.) (Manulife USA), overseeing all Manulife’s U.S. operations.
Mr. DesPrez was President of The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company of North America (Manulife North America), a leading provider of variable annuity products in the United States, from 1996 to 1998. Between 1994 and 1996, he served as President of North American Funds, Manulife’s U.S. mutual fund operation.
Between 1991 and 1994, Mr. DesPrez also held the position of Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel of Manulife North America and was responsible for the creation and start-up of The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company of New York (now John Hancock New York), Manulife’s New York operating company.
Before joining Manulife, Mr. DesPrez practiced law in private practice between 1988 and 1990. He was with the firm of Jones & Blouch Attorneys-at-Law between 1983 and 1988 where he was an associate and a partner during 1988. Jones & Blouch (now Dykema Gossett PLLC) has long represented Manulife and its affiliated companies.
Mr. DesPrez is active in a variety of industry organizations, including serving as a member of the Board of Governors of the Investment Company Institute, Washington D.C. and as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Council of Life Insurers. He also serves as a Trustee of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
Mr. DesPrez graduated from Harvard College in 1978 with an A.B. in Economics and earned a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1983.
Joseph (Joe) Cooper, joined Manulife Financial in April 2007 in the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer. Mr. Cooper holds oversight responsibility for all of Manulife’s Information Technology (IT) activities on a global basis and will be responsible for advancing the Company’s effective use of information technology world-wide including outsourcing and vendor management, global coordination of IT infrastructure and architecture, business continuity planning and testing, operation of the Manila Business Processing Centre, and global Procurement.
Mr. Cooper is also a member of Manulife’s Executive Committee.
Mr. Cooper was previously with IBM Corporation where he was responsible for managing the global technology services outsourcing business for U.S. insurance industry clients, including Manulife. He brings a strong knowledge of the insurance and wealth management industry and is adept at leveraging technology and transforming business processes to support business needs. Mr. Cooper has held a variety of sales, marketing and client relationship roles at IBM over the past 20 years in Canada and the U.S.

Simon Curtis holds the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Actuary. He is responsible for the company’s actuarial reserving on our global reporting bases, source of earnings analysis, embedded value and other external actuarial disclosure, as well as other statutory accountabilities of the Appointed Actuary including policyholder dividends and dynamic capital adequacy testing. Simon is also responsible for overseeing worldwide regulatory capital reporting and management, including certification of the company’s consolidated regulatory capital filings.
Mr. Curtis began his career at Maritime Life in Halifax as an actuarial student. He joined Manulife soon after as an actuarial associate and has been with Manulife for 26 years. Recent roles include lead accountability on all actuarial aspects of Manulife’s demutualization as well as lead role in financial modeling and analysis for Manulife’s entry into Japan. In July 2001 he was appointed Vice President, Business Development. The Business Development unit is responsible for corporate strategic planning, including mergers and acquisitions. In November 2002 he was appointed Vice President and Deputy Appointed Actuary of the Corporate Actuarial division. He was named Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary in March 2003, and was appointed to his current position in April 2004, upon completion of the merger with John Hancock.
Mr. Curtis holds a degree from the University of Toronto in statistics and actuarial science. He is a qualified actuary, having achieved fellowship in the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries in 1985. He is also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
Mr. Curtis is the Chairperson of the Committee on the Role of the Appointed Actuary of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. He is also Chairperson of the Solvency Committee of the Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association, and Co-Chair of the Advisory Group to OSFI (the Federal Insurance Canadian Regulator) on Risk Based Capital. He has served on numerous other task forces and committees, and is a past member of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

Warren Thomson is the Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of Manulife Financial Corporation (MFC) and Chairman of MFC Global Investment Management, MFC’s external client, asset management business. Mr. Thomson is also a member of Manulife Financial's Executive and Management Committees.
MFC's world-wide investment operations manage on behalf of the Company's general fund and external clients, assets in excess of $286 billion*. Assets under management include fixed income and equity securities and alternative assets such as real estate, timber land, agricultural land and oil and gas properties.
Prior to becoming Chief Investment Officer in 2009, Mr. Thomson was responsible for managing MFC Global Investment Management. In addition to being responsible for MFC Global Investment Management's fixed income and equity security management subsidiaries, he also had oversight of Manulife Real Estate, Declaration Management & Research, Hancock Timber Resource Group, Hancock Agricultural Investment Group, and NAL Resources.
Previously, Mr. Thomson was responsible for overseeing the management of all U.S. fixed income portfolios, including public bonds, private debt and mortgages for John Hancock.
Mr. Thomson rejoined Manulife as Senior Vice President, Investments in 2001 after serving as President of Norfolk Capital Partners Inc., a boutique investment bank that structured and arranged tax effective financings for high net worth individuals and corporations. He previously worked for Manulife between 1987 and 1994 as Taxation Vice President.

Hugh McHaffie, as Executive Vice President John Hancock Wealth Management, has responsibility for the Variable Annuity, Retirement Plan Services, Mutual Funds, Fixed Products, Retirement Income & Rollover Solutions and Investment Management Services businesses. John Hancock, the U.S. division of Manulife Financial, is a leading manufacturer and distributor of wealth accumulation and retirement income products in the United States. The broad wealth management product platform enables John Hancock to provide client solutions for their personal, family and business needs. McHaffie is a member of Manulife’s management and executive committees and serves on the board of several John Hancock life insurance companies.
Prior to this role, McHaffie was Senior Vice President, John Hancock Variable Annuities, a position he assumed in May 2006. This represented a return to Manulife, where he held the position of Vice President, Annuity Product Management, from 1990 through 1999. Prior to rejoining John Hancock, McHaffie was Senior Vice President, Individual Business Product Management for MetLife. McHaffie was responsible for product management of all Individual Life Insurance and Annuity products distributed by MetLife’s multiple distribution channels. He also served as chairman of the Metropolitan Series Fund and president of MetLife Advisors.
From 1990 through 1999, McHaffie was responsible for the development of North American Security Life’s variable annuities distributed though Wood Logan Associates. North American Security Life was a subsidiary of North American Life, a company that merged with Manulife in 1996 and formed the base of the current John Hancock variable annuity business.
McHaffie is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a B.A. in Economics. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Diane Bean currently holds the position of Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Human Resources at Manulife Financial. She is a member of Manulife’s Executive Committee and Management Committee and sits on the Board of its Asian holding company.
Ms. Bean graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto. She began her career with Systems Dimensions Ltd. (SDL) as Project Manager in the Education Consulting Division.
In 1975, she joined Manulife Financial in the Corporate office where she held positions in planning, public affairs, government relations, media relations and policyholder relations.
From 1983 to 1985, Ms. Bean was Marketing Vice President for Canada. In 1985 she was appointed Vice President and General Manager of U.S. Operations, and became Senior Vice President and General Manager, U.S. and Caribbean Division in 1988, responsible for the Employee Benefit and Individual Insurance Business in the United States and the Caribbean, in addition to Corporate Information Technology.
In 1992, Ms. Bean became Senior Vice President and General Manager, International Operations, which included Manulife’s Insurance businesses outside North America as well as Reinsurance worldwide. International operations were concentrated in the U.K. and Asia and included wholly owned operations and joint ventures in Hong Kong, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore.
She co-chairs the Toronto Regional Immigration Employment Council, sits on the Human Resources Advisory Board of the Canadian Life and Health Industry Association and is a member of the Board of Governors for the Canada School of Public Service.
In 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, Ms. Bean was named as one of the 100 most influential women in Canada.

Victor Apps is Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager, Asia, responsible for Manulife Financial's insurance and mutual fund operations in Asia. He is also a member of the Company's Executive Committee. Mr. Apps is responsible for Manulife's operations in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Macau. Mr. Apps received an M.A. in Mathematics and Physics in 1970 from Cambridge University, United Kingdom. Later that year, he joined Manulife Financial in Canada as a Computer Programmer Analyst and received a series of promotions before being appointed Administrative Vice President in 1981. In March 1985, Mr. Apps was appointed to the position of General Manager, Manulife Indonesia and seconded to Jakarta, Indonesia. In 1988, he became International Vice President, Asia Pacific Division with responsibility for all Asian operations outside Hong Kong. Subsequently, he was appointed Vice President and General Manager, Greater China Division in 1993 with responsibility for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. From 1990 to 1996, Mr. Apps led Manulife's team negotiating entry into China. Mr. Apps was voted "Insurance Personality of the Year" at the Asia Insurance Industry Awards 1999.

Gail Cook-Bennett was appointed Chair of the Board on October 2, 2008. Gail Cook-Bennett is past Chair of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, an investment management organization that invests the Canada Pension Plan fund to help pay the benefits of 17 million Canadians who participate in the Plan, a position she held since 1998. Gail Cook-Bennett holds a BA (Honours) from Carleton University and a PhD (Economics) from the University of Michigan. She is a Member of the Order of Canada. "John M. Cassaday is the founding President and Chief Executive Officer of Corus Entertainment Inc. Corus is a Canadian leader in radio and specialty television. Corus also owns Nelvana, one of the world's leading producers of animated programming and related products. Prior to Corus, John was President of CTV Television Network and Campbell Soup Company in Canada and the U.K.
John sits on the Board of Directors of Manulife Financial and Sysco Corporation. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Masonite International Corporation, J. M. Schneider Corporation, Canadian Airlines and Loblaw Companies Limited. John was the Chair of the Dean’s Advisory Board of the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto and was the Chair of the 1995 United Way Campaign for Metro Toronto and Chair of the Board of St. Michael’s Hospital from 2004 to 2006.
John holds an M.B.A. (Dean’s List) from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, and was honoured in 1998 as their most Distinguished Alumni.
John Cassaday has also received many business, industry and charitable honours including induction in the Marketing Hall of Legends in 2006 and the Gold Medal from the Association of Canadian Advertisers in 2004, which recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of marketing communications in Canada. John was also a recipient of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews 2004 Human Relations Award as well as the 2004 recipient of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ top honour, the Gold Ribbon Award for Broadcast Excellence. He was awarded the 1995 Paul Mulvihill Heart Award and was the recipient of the 1994 CEO Award of Excellence in Public Relations, presented by the Canadian Public Relations Society."
