Previously, Mr. Novinski was President of Organon USA, and Executive Vice President of Operations and Marketing for Organon International. He served on the Board of Directors for Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America from 2004 through 2008. Mr. Novinski received his B.S. in Biology from Washington and Jefferson College.

Michael R. Garone, Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, joined Emisphere in August 2007. Mr. Garone was the previous CFO and Interim Chief Executive Officer of Astralis, Ltd., a biotechnology company. Prior to that, Mr. Garone spent two decades at AT&T, where he held a variety of positions, including CFO of AT&T Alascom. Mr. Garone received his MBA from Columbia University and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. He received his B.A. in Mathematics from Colgate University.
M. Gary I. Riley, DVM, Ph.D., Vice President, Nonclinical Development and Applied Biology, joined Emisphere in October 2007. Previously, he was the Vice President of Toxicology and Applied Biology at Alkermes, Inc. and Director of Pathobiology at Lederle Laboratories. He is certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and the American Board of Toxicology. His professional contributions include over 50 scientific publications and preclinical submissions to the U.S. FDA and EU drug registration agencies.
Nicholas J. Hart has joined Emisphere Technologies, Inc. as vice president of strategy and development. In this capacity, Mr. Hart will be responsible for the planning and commercial development aspects of the company's Eligen technology. Mr. Hart joins the company with more than 16 years of commercial experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Most recently, he was leader of the Contraception Therapy Area and a member of the corporate executive leadership team for Organon, recently acquired by Schering Plough.

Paul Lubetkin is our Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary and has been with Pharmasset since October 2008. Previously, Mr. Lubetkin held similar positions in public and private companies in the healthcare industry commencing in 1990, including with Emisphere Technologies, Aptuit, CollaGenex, Pliva, Odyssey, PersonalPath Systems and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. He was a litigation partner in the law firm Kelley Drye & Warren LLP and served in the Enforcement Division of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mr. Lubetkin received a B.S. from Northwestern University and a J.D. (with distinction) from the University of Iowa.

Stephen K. Carter, M.D., a Director of the Company since 2003, is the former Senior Vice President, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, of Sugen, Inc. (ownership of Sugen has since passed to Pfizer, Inc. as part of its acquisition of Pharmacia in April 2003). Dr. Carter previously was the Senior Vice President, Research and Development of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., now independently owned. Prior to this, he served 13 years at Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., including, as its Senior Vice President, Worldwide Clinical Research and Development. Dr. Carter is a former Deputy Director at the National Cancer Institute (NCI)'s Division of Cancer Treatment and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He received his Medical Doctorate from New York Medical College. Stephen K. Carter, M.D. has served on our Board of Directors since September 1998. Since 1997, Dr. Carter has been a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Carter was Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 1995 to 1997. Prior to joining Boehringer, Dr. Carter was Senior Vice President of Worldwide Clinical Research and Development at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. From 1976 to 1982, Dr. Carter served as Director of the Northern California Cancer Program. Dr. Carter was also appointed to President Clinton's panel for AIDS drug development. Dr. Carter is a director of Allos Therapeutics, Alfacell Corporation, Emisphere Technologies, Inc. and Vion Pharmaceuticals Inc. and several privately held companies. Dr. Carter received an A.B. in History from Columbia College and an M.D. degree from New York Medical College. He completed a medical internship and residency at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Dr. Daniel J. Drucker is currently Professor of Medicine, a member of the Endocrinology Division at the University of Toronto and Director of the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre at the University of Toronto. He is a foremost expert on the subject of enteric hormones. He received training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology from the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and the Toronto General Hospital , University of Toronto . Following completion of a research fellowship in Molecular Endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital , he established his own laboratory research program in 1987 in Toronto . His laboratory studies the synthesis, secretion, and mechanism of action of the glucagon-like peptides. Specific areas of interest include how glucagon, GLP-1, GLP-2, and the enzyme DPP-IV (dipeptidyl peptidase IV) regulate metabolic pathways that control food intake, nutrient absorption and disposal, and intestinal mucosal integrity. Dr. Drucker is an Editor of the journal Endocrinology, and the recipient of outstanding investigator awards from the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Endocrine Society, and the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, and has been elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. Dr. Drucker received his M.D. degree from the University of Toronto in 1980 and received his FRCPC in Internal Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1984.
Franklin M. Berger, CFA, has served as a Director of Seattle Genetics since June 2004 and is Chairman of the Audit Committee. Mr. Berger is a biotechnology industry analyst with over 25 years of experience in capital markets and financial analysis. He served most recently as Managing Director, Equity Research and Senior Biotechnology Analyst at J.P. Morgan Securities from 1998 to 2003. In this position, he initiated team coverage of 26 biotechnology companies and was responsible for technical, scientific and clinical due diligence as well as company selection. Previously, Mr. Berger served in similar capacities at Salomon Smith Barney from 1997 to 1998 and Josephthal & Co. from 1991 to 1997. Prior to his work as a biotechnology analyst, he managed Pantagruel Partners, a firm that developed early-stage pharmaceutical compounds for sale to drug companies and venture capital firms. He holds an M.B.A. from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and an M.A. in International Economics and a B.A. in International Relations both from Johns Hopkins University. In addition to Seattle Genetics, Mr. Berger serves as a director of VaxGen, Inc., Isotechnika Inc. and Thallion Pharmaceuticals, all publicly-traded biopharmaceutical companies, and HealthShares, Inc., an investment company.

Robert A. Gelfand M.D. is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Yale University. Dr. Gelfand practices Hematology, Internal Medicine, and Oncology in Connecticut and New York City. Steven E. Kahn, MB, ChB Metabolism, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at the University of Washington. Dr. Kahn has served on the editorial boards for Diabetes Care and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. He is a member of the board of directors of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and has served as Chair of the Scientific and Medical Meetings Oversight Committee of the ADA. He is also a member of The Endocrine Society and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. His current research interests include, but are not limited to, the assessment of islet function and insulin action in states of normal and abnormal carbohydrate metabolism and the role of fat distribution on metabolic variables associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
