Energy Northwest is a major public energy resource for the Northwest region. Headquartered in Richland, Washington, we provide electricity, at cost, to public utilities and municipalities. The Pacific Northwest has widely supported public power and its affiliates for nearly seven decades. Energy Northwest is a Joint Operating Agency (JOA), comprising 24 member public utilities from across the state of Washington. We are governed by two boards: a Board of Directors and an Executive Board. Our Board of Directors includes representatives from member utilities, while the Executive Board includes representatives from member utilities, gubernatorial appointees, and public representatives selected by the Board of Directors. We own and operate four electricity generating stations: Columbia Generating Station (nuclear power plant), Packwood Lake Hydroelectric Project, Nine Canyon Wind Project, and White Bluffs Solar Station. We also provide operations and maintenance services for other facilities, such as the Mason County PUD No. 3 Olympic View Generating Facility. In addition, our Energy/Business Services organization is devoted to the identification and development of new generating resources, encompassing both traditional and renewable technologies. Energy Northwest is a sales affiliate of Hometown Connections, offering a suite of services from the American Public Power Association for public utilities. Our vision is to be the region's preferred source for energy solutions. ...

Dan Gunkel was elected Commissioner of the Klickitat County Public Utility District (PUD) in 1991. He was appointed to Energy Northwest's Board of Directors that same year. In 1994, Commissioner Gunkel was elected to Energy Northwest's Executive Board. In April 2006, he was re-elected to serve another term on the Executive Board. Mr. Gunkel is a co-owner/business manager of Gunkel Orchards, Inc. Managing the daily operations of a medium-sized fruit orchard makes him representative of irrigators in Klickitat County. As a business owner and customer of the PUD, it is in his best interest to see that the utility is run efficiently and that it continues to provide low-cost power. He sought the Commissioner position because of a commitment to public service, but admits he also has an interest in seeing the PUD provide quality service. During his tenure as a Commissioner, Mr. Gunkel has supported the PUD's policy of not cross-subsidizing irrigators with revenues from other energy consumers. In the face of potential deregulation in the power industry, he says that by having each customer pay their own way, the PUD is more stable financially and less dependent on a handful of large consumers. Commissioner Gunkel resides with his family in Goldendale, Washington.
