Europe's Rosetta probe completes key fly-by of Earth
PARIS AFP — Europe's comet-chasing probe Rosetta has completed a crucial fly-by of Earth to pick up speed on a 10-year mission to rendezvous with a distant comet, the European Space Agency ESA said on Wednesday. "An important milestone has just been accomplished," the Paris-based agency said after the...
Arctic ice loss: Northwest Passage now open, says space agency
PARIS AFP — The Northwest Passage, the dreamed-of yet historically impassable maritime shortcut between Europe and Asia, has now fully opened up due to record shrinkage of Arctic sea ice, the European Space Agency ESA said on Friday. It released a mosaic of images, taken in early September by...
Europe set for billion-euro gamble with comet-chasing probe
PARIS AFP — A European comet-chasing spacecraft is set for a nail-biting close encounter this weekend with Mars. The billion-euro (1.3-billion-dollar) probe Rosetta will come within 250 kilometers (156 miles) of the Red Planet's surface, using Martian gravity to correct its course in one of the longest and costliest...
Saturn's moon Titan looks like a primitive Earth
PARIS AFP — A historic mission to Titan, Saturn's largest moon, has revealed a chemical hell of great complexity which somewhat resembles the forces that helped sculpt the infant Earth, scientists said. In its parachute-braked descent to Titan's surface on January 14, the European Space Agency ESA probe Huygens...
Mars has a big watery past -- and present, too
PARIS AFP — The European spacecraft Mars Express has added powerful evidence to the belief that water once covered Mars and large reserves of precious ice lurk close to the surface today, studies presented said. European probe sniffs out a site for lunar outpost
CAMBRIDGE, England AFP — An experimental European probe has spotted a tiny area on the Moon that could be a promising site to set up a future manned outpost, a mission scientist revealed. Measuring "just a few square kilometers miles across" and located near the Moon's North Pole, the...
Heads up, it's Europe's comet-chaser
PARIS AFP — Weather permitting, European astronomers should get a good view of Rosetta, a spacecraft designed to rendezvous with a comet in deep space in one of the most ambitious ventures in space exploration. Europe's Moon probe is safely slotted in lunar orbit
PARIS, AFP — Europe's first mission to the Moon, the unmanned probe SMART-1, has been safely placed in orbit around the Moon, the European Space Agency ESA announced. The probe was captured by the Moon's gravity on Monday, ESA's director of science, David Southwood, said in a teleconference from...
Cassini spacecraft set to kiss Titan, Saturn's moon
PARIS AFP — The US-European spacecraft Cassini-Huygens was to make a historic flyby of Titan, Saturn's largest moon, passing by so low as to almost touch the fringes of its atmosphere, the European Space Agency ESA said. At the closest point in the encounter, at 1644 GMT, the craft...
'Rogue waves' reported by mariners get scientific backing
PARIS AFP ? European satellites have given confirmation to terrified mariners who describe seeing freak waves as tall as 10-storey buildings, the European Space Agency ESA said.
