Evolution Petroleum Corporation was formed as Natural Gas Systems, Inc. in 2003 to exploit opportunities in the maturing U.S. upstream petroleum industry. Much of the oil and gas found to date in the United States remains in place, due to factors such as depleted reservoir pressure, well bore damage, low oil and gas prices at the time of abandonment, inadequate reservoir penetration, limited sweep of injected water and unavailability of modern enhanced oil recovery options. We formed our business to acquire these kinds of resources at a low cost per MCF (thousand cubic feet of natural gas) or BO (barrel of oil) in order to apply existing and new technologies to access and produce a portion of the oil and natural gas remaining in the reservoirs. Many oil and gas fields discovered, developed and produced primarily before the 1970's offer the potential of re-entering, restoring production and/or replacing wells with significant amounts of economically recoverable reserves at current product prices. As the decision to shut in or abandon these wells often was based upon oil and gas prices far below current levels, many oil and gas fields were passed down from major oil companies to large independents and then to small independents due to low profitability. Mr. Herlin is a co-founder, serving as our President, CEO and Director since EPM's inception in September 2003. He has 26 years of experience in development, mergers and acquisitions, operations and finance. Previously, Mr. Herlin served as CEO and, previously, as CFO for an oil and gas exploration company focused on 3 D seismic exploration. He also served as Vice President, Strategic Initiatives of Enron Liquids prior to 1997 and Director of Acquisitions for several independent oil and gas companies. He also led a consulting group focused on acquisitions and strategy. Mr. Herlin earned his B.S. and M.E. degrees from Rice University and his MBA from Harvard. Mr. Herlin has been involved in numerous transactions totaling more than $800 million. In the course of his oil and gas acquisition work, he has evaluated properties along the Gulf Coast, Mid-Continent, Rocky Mountains and Los Angeles basins while leading numerous evaluation teams of professionals. Mr. Herlin created and led an operating group that initiated and successfully completed a conventional horizontal drilling program with 28 wells in the Giddings Field in central Texas during the early stages of horizontal drilling by industry. He was the lead consultant and manager for a $65 million manufacturing company leveraged buy-out and turn-around. Mr. Herlin currently serves on the Board of Directors of Boots and Coots Group.
