The Simclar Group, Scottish based, and with its headquarters in Dunfermline in Fife, has grown from the most inauspicious beginnings. In 1975, Sam Russell left his job with a cable multinational and set up a braiding machine in his own garage. After a year, he moved to a rented building in southern Fife, which conveniently had a telephone box right outside. This was used as the company telephone for quite some time. But business soon improved, mainly thanks to contracts for specific cables from IBM and other major multinationals moving into Scotland. Within two years of inception, Simclar had 50 employees; within three years, turnover hit the important 1million mark - $1.5million dollars. From here things moved apace. By 1985 there were 200 employees, now three buildings, and turnover of $20million. By 2001, the 25th anniversary of the founding of the company, Simclar International, as it was by now known, had a factory and offices in the US, with eight factories on the Scottish campus, all in southern Fife. Turnover had grown to $150million, and employee numbers were around 900. Along with much of electronics co-manufacturing, Simclar saw a substantial decline in business during the following year. However, the financial prudence of the company meant it was in a position to begin to extend its global reach. In 2001, Simclar bought 72% of Techdyne, Inc, incorporating Litton Corp, with facilities in five US states...
