Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer
Patrick J. Moore has served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation since 2003. Prior to that Moore was Chief Financial Officer, a position he held for six years.
Before joining Smurfit-Stone in 1987, Moore served 12 years at Continental Bank in Chicago in various corporate lending and international banking positions.
Beginning in 2005, Moore initiated and led the company’s successful three-year transformation effort which has resulted in one of the most modern and efficient corrugated converting operations in the industry. He has driven operational and functional excellence through the enterprise resulting in a more centralized, functionally aligned operating structure that is focused on quality, service, continuous improvement and consistent processes.
Under Moore’s leadership, the company has grown the recycling business and improved productivity throughout the company’s mill, container and recycling operations. In addition, Moore has executed substantial improvement to the company’s capital structure, including refinancing debt and reducing debt by one billion dollars over the past three years.
Smurfit-Stone has held the industry’s leading position in safety performance for seven consecutive years.
Moore has served as the lead director for Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) since 2006 and is currently a member of the executive and audit committees. Moore serves on the board of directors of his alma mater, DePaul University in Chicago. He serves on the Nasdaq CEO Council, J.P. Morgan’s National Advisory Board, and the boards of the YMCA of Greater St. Louis, Boys Hope Girls Hope, and Big Shoulders in Chicago.

Steven J. Klinger
President and Chief Operating Officer
Steven J. Klinger is president and chief operating officer for Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. He is also a member of the company’s board of directors. Klinger joined Smurfit-Stone in May 2006 from Georgia-Pacific, where he most recently served as executive vice president of packaging, pulp and global procurement.
During his 23-year career at Georgia-Pacific, Klinger provided strategic leadership that was marked by numerous achievements. Over a six-year period beginning in 2000, Klinger led a team that transformed the packaging business at Georgia-Pacific from industry-average returns on assets and returns on sales to an industry-leading performance. Klinger played key roles in more than $10 billion of transactions as both corporate development director and executive vice president. He led the successful initiative to centralize global purchasing.
When he joined Smurfit-Stone, Klinger began leading Smurfit-Stone’s operations through the company’s three-year transformation program, which includes upgrading the leadership talent, improving the company’s ability to meet customers’ needs, reducing the company’s cost structure, scaling operations, improving technology, specializing the manufacturing process, eliminating redundancies, and aligning sales and marketing.
Klinger is a graduate of Georgia State University, with a degree in accounting, and Duke University’s Advanced Management Program. In June 2008, Klinger was appointed to the board of directors of Navistar International Corporation.

Ronald D. Hackney is senior vice president of human resources for Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, a post he assumed in 2003. He is also a member of the company’s executive committee.
A 32-year veteran in human resources management, Hackney joined one of Smurfit-Stone’s predecessor companies, Container Corporation of American, in 1976. He served as corporate labor relations manager from 1986 to 1995 and held regional human resources posts in the container and mill operations prior to that.
From 1995 to 2003, Hackney served as human resources manager for the company’s Mill division, where he made significant contributions to improving the division’s safety performance. He also played a key role in integrating the human resources processes of the Jefferson Smurfit Corporation and Stone Container Corporation mill operations after the November 1998 merger that created Smurfit-Stone, and the St. Laurent Paperboard Inc. mill system subsequent to the 2000 acquisition.

Dan Acker's 30-plus years of experience in the motor carrier industry includes all aspects of daily operations and administration, from line haul to financial statements, with heavy emphasis in the cost and statistical areas. Acker has testified as an expert witness on motor carrier operations before numerous state and federal agencies. Danny Slaton began his career in transportation pricing data and technology with the Central and Southern Association in Louisville, KY in 1983. With the 1995 merger of SMC and CSA, Slaton was named the vice president of sales for SMC , and shortly thereafter the leadership of marketing was added to his position. Slaton was named VP of business development in 2004 and was promoted to Sr. VP of business development in 2006. Since that time, Slaton has been instrumental in the development and sales efforts for the current generation of SMC technology products, having served as a core team member in the creation of SMC 's major brands, including CzarLite, RateWare and FastClass. In his role as senior VP of business development, Slaton will still oversee the sales and marketing functions of the company, but his main focus will be to assess new markets, further strategic alliance initiatives and analyze business opportunities for SMC and its products and services.

Dr. Joseph V. LeBlanc, Ph.D., is vice president of research and development for Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. John Haudrich is vice president of investor relations for Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. Brad Gregory has 24 years of experience in LTL transportation, logistics and technology. Ms. Duckworth serves pro bono as President and Chairman of the Board of Arzu, Inc.; and is an active member of the U.S.-Afghan Women's Council, a bi-partisan public/private partnership established by Presidents Bush and Karzai in 2002. She is a retired Partner and Managing Director of Goldman, Sachs, & Co., where she was named the first woman sales and trading partner in the firm's history during her 20 year career. Her book, a primer on how to start a business entitled, The Old Girls Network: Insider Advice for Women Building Businesses in a Man's World (Basic Books 2003), was published in September 2003. Ms. Duckworth is the Chairman of the Board of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, and is the first woman to hold this position. Ms. Duckworth serves as a Director of the following compannies: Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company; Smurfit Stone Container Corporation; Russell Investment Group; and DNP Select Income Fund. She serves on the Board of Overseers of the Wharton School, the Board of Directors of Global Heritage Fund in Palo Alto; and the Advisory Board of the Duke Islamic Studies Center in Durham, North Carolina. She is a past Chair of the Committee of 200, the organization of leading women entrepreneurs and corporate business executives in the U.S. The recipient of numerous awards, Ms. Duckworth was named a 2008 Skoll Foundation honoree for Social Entrepreneurship and received the 2006 Women's Health and Dignity Award from Americans for UNFPA for her work creating sustainable income generation opportunities for women weavers in Afghanistan. She holds an M.B.A. from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from the University of Texas.
