The company exports coal, produces ferrochrome and vanadium, mines and smelts zinc, mines anthracite and harvests wood. These activities are carried out throughout Australia, South Africa, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Chile and its home base of the United Kingdom. The company was founded in 1958, has revenue of $8 billion and employs about 17,000 people. In 2005 the company acquired a one-third stake in CerrejA¦n thermal coal operation, a large scale, cost competitive asset with an exceptional reserve base and access to the high growth US and European markets for $1.7 billion, and purchased 19.9% of Falconbridge Limited.
